Abstract

Tablighi Jamaat engages in proselytizing by spreading pure religious and spiritual principles without even mentioning politics. However, a number of Tablighi Jamaat leaders have recently started to actively participate in real politics, particularly in the 2019 presidential Election. The researchers looked at Tablighi Jamaat's involvement in the 2019 presidential election and their effects on shifting religious political identities as a result of their participation in or even campaigning for one of the presidential candidates' spouses. This study also aims to explore their views on the concept of democracy, Pancasila, and the discourse on the formation of the Islamic caliphate that has developed rapidly in Indonesia in recent years. This research was conducted in Lombok. It employed a qualitative method and technic of observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation for data collection. The data found in this study were then analyzed using power theory and identity theory. The results of this study show that Tablighi Jamaat tends to be pragmatic in responding to various systems implemented by each country, including the democratic system and Pancasila. Additionally, they believe that rather than creating an Islamic state through violent actions, the Islamic caliphate is a state in which each individual has internalized Islamic beliefs. Some Tablighi Jamaat members participated in practical politics during the 2019 presidential election, however, this can be viewed from two angles: either as a justifiable activity because it was done outside of the Tablighi Jamaat forum, or as a deviation because it went against their proselytizing agenda.
