Abstract

This research aims to discuss the teachings of the Protestant Batak Christian Church (HKBP) and the Toba Batak about the relationship between the living and the dead. Batakness believes the dead still have a relationship with the living, while HKBP denies it. To reconcile these two doctrines, we will reinterpret “the communion of saints” phrase in the Apostolic Creed, which always presents as one of the main elements in the liturgy of HKBP. We argue that the “communion of saints” is an association of all believers, not only cross-geographical (trans spatial) but also cross-age (trans temporal). The relation of the living and the dead in the association is not direct but via Christ. Therefore, the trans temporality of the communion is evidence of the connectedness of the living and the dead.

Abstract

ABSTRACT   This article interprets a text of The Apostolic Tradition, a 3rd century Church Order containing rules for ordination, communion, catechism and baptism, as well as daily prayers. Studies of this ancient text were still very few in Indonesia, and mostly concerned with the part of the communion. In this article, the author will examine daily prayer, specifically the text of Apostolic Tradition 41:1-4 on the dawn prayer. The passage instructed that the congregation must gather every morning to listen to the teachings and perform communal prayer. This research started from fact that there were few daily prayer celebrations in Indonesian churches, especially communal morning prayer. This study employed qualitative study design through literature studies and hermeneutics. The author argues that the communal dawn prayer in the Apostolic Tradition is relevant to be developed in Indonesian context. Abstract

Daily prayer is one of the oldest ecclesiastical liturgical traditions and has been known since the time of the early church. However, this tradition seems to be fading over time. In Indonesia, daily prayer is no longer widely known by Christians. Meanwhile, the five times salat continue to be practised faithfully by its adherents in the Islamic tradition. Liturgical studies recognize the practice of daily prayer and the five times salat as "canonical hours" or hours of prayer. Although Christians were familiar with the hours of prayer before Islam, Muslims maintain them more faithfully and consistently. This phenomenon will become the focus of this paper in the frame of comparative theology. This paper explores the superior values of the Islamic five times salat, which can be appreciated as inspiration for developing Christian daily prayer.

Abstract

This article explores the importance of the Sending in the Sunday Worship, which is crucial to support people's daily lives as it bridges the gap between every Sunday service where people worship. The narrative of the Sending must be appropriately formulated to ensure that people can implement it effectively. Currently, the narrative is often based on weekly changing sermon content, leading to unfinished tasks accumulating without evaluation. To address this issue, this article proposes that the Sending narrative should be based on the remembrance of The Lord's Supper, which is the main element of Sunday worship besides the sermon. By using Jesus' words “do this!” as a potential basis for sending people into everyday life, this article argues that individuals can be encouraged to fulfill their role in showing love to others.
