Abstract

Akhir abad 19, Jawa menjadi panggung propaganda Kiai Ṣāliḥ Darat untuk mewujudkan harmoni di masyarakat. Berbagai pandangan yang dapat menumbuhkan semangat anti kolonial disisipkan dalam karya tulisnya, seperti dalam kitab Minhāj Al-Atqiyā`. Bukan hal aneh jika Kiai Ṣāliḥ melakukan aksi demikian. Pasalnya, pemerintah kolonial merupakan pemerintahan ẓālim yang menjajah agama dan bangsanya. Untuk mewujudkan masyarakat harmoni, berbagai penindasan, pemiskinan, serta pembodohan dari pemerintah kolonial harus dihilangkan. Lebih dari itu, propaganda Kiai Ṣāliḥ tidak terbatas pada lingkup eksternal untuk mewujudkan harmoni dalam kehidupan bangsa dan negara. Dalam lingkup internal, Kiai Ṣāliḥ terus berupaya untuk mengonsolidasikan antar kelompok keagamaan dalam Islam, yang mengalami perkembangan cukup intensif di masyarakat. Ini dilakukan untuk menciptakan suatu kekuatan yang sinergis dan kokoh untuk menghadapi kolonial. Penelitian ini ingin mengkaji teknik propaganda yang dilakukan Kiai Ṣāliḥ dalam kitab Minhāj Al-Atqiyā`. Penelitian ini merupakan kajian kepustakaan (library research), dengan pendekatan interaksionisme simbolik. Dalam kitab Minhāj Al-Atqiyā, teknik propaganda yang dilakukan Kiai Ṣāliḥ dalam lingkup eksternal adalah teknik  plain folks, name calling, card stacking, bandwagon, testimonial, dan fear arousing. Sedangkan dalam lingkup internal, teknik yang digunakan adalah Glittering Generalities. Beberapa teknik ini memberikan pesan tentang pentingnya kekuatan harmoni-internal, sebelum membangun kehidupan yang benar-benar harmoni secara lebih luas, khususnya dalam kehidupan berbangsa dan bernegara.

Abstract

Coffee and coffee shop became the subject of study that was not much considered in Islamic studies, although both of its position is very significant in Muslim society. This study tries to see the potential area of Islamic discourses related to coffee and coffee shop. Based on an interdisciplinary approach, wherein the data derived from literature and ethnographic studies, the result revealed that there are set of matters which were missed by scholarly attention in the flow of changes and developments of Muslim society, both in the historical and contemporary space. There are a number of potential areas of the Islamic studies that can be developed through coffee and coffee shops, including the study of texts that include particular historical narratives and historical ideas related to these two material elements; Sufism, coffee, and coffee shop interrelations; the presence of Muslim women in public spaces, especially in the coffee shops; and harmony and diversity as a result of Muslim encounters with coffee and coffee shops, which can be seen for example through the framework of inter-religious relations.

Abstract

This paper seeks to depict a reciprocal dialogue between the religious gathering of Sufism that is typical with piety and the social activities in the coffeehouse given to take pleasure and leisure occurring in one place in Yogyakarta. This depiction intends for reconsidering deeply how Sufism influences to society. Despite the gathering going on weekly, the everyday life of coffeehouse society from January to July in 2018 will present here to support the picture of dialogue. In result, there is a change of social formation in the coffeehouse by virtue of an encounter between piety and pleasure and leisure. However, this change is not as simply as Misbah (Misbah, 2018b) sketch before consisting of followers (Jama’ah), coffee drinkers, and visitors. It is due to the main characteristics of coffeehouse society that tends to be freely from what social status is, thereby becoming difficult enough to formulate precisely. Of this, there is thus a question in relation with what the harmonious landscape in coffeehouse described by Misbah (Misbah, 2018b) is completely generated from Sufism or a product of the social life of coffeehouse.
