Abstract

Jihad is an obligation for all Muslims according to their respective abilities, but jihad has often been misinterpreted as war. The jihad ordered in the Qur’an is not limited to jihad in the meaning of war, but includes many other meanings. Jihad in the Mecca period was carried out not with war, but by devoting all abilities to face the polytheists with sentences that touched reason and heart because they saw the situation and condition of Muslims who were still weak and did not have physical strength. Meanwhile, jihad in the Medina period tended to be interpreted as ‘war’, namely the efforts of the Muslims to retaliate against the attacks aimed at them. In the Indonesian context, jihad is more interpreted as lust jihad, namely fighting the lusts that exist within oneself and also maintaining the noble national values.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the challenges and opportunities of the Asian Church in the context of developments in information and communication technology and the Covid-19 pandemic. This research departs from the awareness of researchers that human life today cannot be separated from the presence of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as a means to support various daily activities. The high intensity of the use of this facility shows that this technology has occupied a central role in human life. The Catholic Church in Asia today is also faced with this reality. The duties and responsibilities of someone who has received the gift of baptism (sanctify, preach and serve) should be carried out in the use of ICT. This article focuses on the discussion of ICT which is a challenge for the Catholic Church in Asia during a pandemic, apart from other contexts that it is also facing (the encounter of cultures, religions, and marginalized groups). This research uses a descriptive-qualitative research method. Data are collected from Catholic Church documents as primary data and reputable journals as secondary sources. This research found that fake news (hoaxes) hate speech and narcissistic tendencies are the main challenges in the use of ICT today. However, ICT provides many opportunities for the Catholic Church in Asia to voice the Good News with preaching, sanctification, and service through existing media.

Abstract

This article discusses the gap that occurs between Catholic Urban Students and the Church in Malang City. This writing uses qualitative research methods with direct interviews with several urban Catholic students. The author dis[1]cusses this theme in the light of the praxis model according to Stephen B Bevans. The results of this research found that there are two factors that cause the gap between urban Catholic students and the Church. The first factor comes from urban students, namely urban students do not understand the meaning of the Eucharist celebration well, so for them the Eucharist is not an obligation, but as a necessity, urban students often come late to church and choose seats at the back so they don’t hear well. clear parish information is read at the time of the announcement. Then urban students still haven’t moved on with the old culture that comes from their region, but they are swept away by digital culture. The second factor comes from the church. By leading the Eucharist celebration on Sunday, the parish priest feels he has carried out his obligation to serve the people as a whole. Then the pastoral method is not based on the reality of people’s lives so that the services provided by pastoral officers do not touch directly with the lives of people (urban students). Based on the results of this research, this research recommends that the church be the first initiator in embracing Urban Catholic students in Malang City by accommodating activities or training and providing opportunities for them to be involved in church services and supporting them in the growth and development of their spiritual life.
