Abstract

ABSTRACT: This article contains responses toward opinions which say that humor by Abunawas prevailing in Indonesia is fictive and not from Arab. After analyzing texts of the eighth and twentieth century of Abunawas, it is clear that based on the aspects of fictional indications either formal or referential, ill-locution and per-locution, as well as imaginative and non imaginative, texts of Abunawas in the twentieth century is more fictive than the texts of the eighth century. In addition, this article shows that either texts of the eighth or twentieth century both contain humor and non humor. The texts that consist of joking indicate that the type of humor in the eighth century is less than the twentieth century. Based on the categorization mentioned above, this article also tries to say that humors prevailing in the eighth century texts of Abunawas are mostly classified into “superiority theories”; whilst the twentieth century texts are correspond to theories proposed by D.H. Monro (1988).KEY WORDS: Humor and non humor, Abunawas, imaginative and non imaginative, and eighth and twentieth century texts.  About the Author: Dr. Maman Lesmana is a Lecturer at the Arabic Studies Program, Department of Area Studies, Faculty of Humanities UI (University of Indonesia), UI Campus, Depok 16412, West Java, Indonesia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: In studying related to the aspects of historical novel, the literature experts classified all of the historical novel into three main categories, namely: propaganda, education, and escapism. This classification is not based on aesthetic considerations, but on the issue of historical truth. Accordingly, the first and third classifications mislead or ignore the historical truth, while the second classification abuses the novel media. Propaganda historical novels generally have political or religious motives, educational historical novels aims to provide factual information to the reader, and escapism historical novels are largely intended to provide entertainment. Meanwhile, other literature experts divided the historical novel into two categories, namely: traditional historical novels and post-modernist historical novels. The traditional historical novel reached its peak popularity in the 19th century, and is often used as material for study by the critics at the time. A general characteristic of this novel, which is also regarded as a weakness, is often to incorporate elements of romantic love in addition to elements of history. Meanwhile, post-modernists’ historical novels reject such forms. Based on the classification, this article attempts to examine the historical novels in Arabic literature and how they are categorized. Historical novels which are used as the case studies in this article are the works of historical novels by Jurji Zaydan (1861), Naguib Mahfouz (1911), and Gamal al-Ghitani (1945).KEY WORDS: Historical novel, Arabic literature, category and classification, historical truth, the works of Jurji Zaydan, Naguib Mahfouz, and Gamal al-Ghitani.About the Author: Dr. Maman Lesmana is a Senior Lecturer at the Arabic Language Department, Faculty of Humanities UI (University of Indonesia), UI Campus Depok, West Java, Indonesia. Abstract

This article entitled “Texts in Indonesian Political Humor: Mass Criticism or Just Entertainment?”. In a book edited by Willibald Ruch (2007) mentioned that there are five functions of humor that related to politics, namely: (1) to express ones political values and attitudes indirectly; (2) look dilapidated authority figures; (3) express something that cannot be tolerated; (4) explore taboo topics; and (5) achieve a justice. Then, how is the function of political humor in Indonesia? This article aims to reveal the form and content of the text in Indonesian political humor. Function of humor in Indonesian politics, as well as humor in general, is still regarded by most people as a means of entertainment, not as a tool for understanding political issues or improve the effectiveness of political message. Thus, someone is to read the political humor not to see the political issues contained in it, but to see the elements of humor. Thus, success or failure of the text is not seen from whether or not the sharp of political criticism contained in it, but from whether or not the humor funny read. From the texts studied found that if seen from the shape and contents, texts in Indonesian political humor are more fiction than non-fiction, so the function was more towards entertainment rather than criticism.KEY WORD: Humor, politics, the people of Indonesia, entertainment, criticism, fiction, non-fiction, and function of social control.About the Author: Dr. Maman Lesmana adalah Dosen di Program Studi Bahasa Arab, Fakultas Ilmu Pengetahuan Budaya UI (Universitas Indonesia), Kampus UI Depok, Jawa Barat, Indonesia.
