Abstract

This research is aimed to describe the procedure of mind mapping technique on teaching vocabulary and to know the improvement of students’ vocabulary mastery after teaching learning  vocabulary through mind mapping technique. In collecting the required data, the writer did test and questionnaire. The writer as teacher tried to apply mind mapping technique in teaching vocabulary mastery of students. The result of test show that mind mapping technique improved students’ vocabulary mastery. The result of the questionnaires show that most of the students agree that mind mapping is able to advance them, improve their vocabulary, expand their ideas, and increase their self confidence in learning. Key Words: Vocabulary, Mind Mapping.

Abstract

This research was conducted to find out the students errors in distinguishing between collective and plural noun and the factors made the students errors in distinguishing between collective noun and plural noun. In collecting required data, the researcher used interview and test. The subject of this research was the students at class VII2 SMPN 1 Nisam which consisted of 29 students. The result of this research shown that the students errors were divided into three categories, namely, errors of omission, errors of addition and errors of misuse. Based on the result of test, it was found out that there were 10,7% of students made errors of omission, 67,4% errors of misuse and 21,9 % errors of addition. The result of interview shown that students made many errors caused by two factors; they are external and internal factor. External factor come from the method of teaching, because how well the students understand the material depends on the method of teaching that used by the teacher. Internal factor was the students themselves, they did not pay attention to their study, some of them were afraid and shy to ask the teacher if they do not understand the material. Some of them were did not do repetition of their lesson or lazy to study. Keywords: Error, Collective and Plural Noun

Abstract

Abstract

This research was concerned to find out strategies were used by the eighth grade students of MTsS Safinatussalamah Lhokseumawe to overcome the difficulties in English speaking, and to know the reason they chose those strategies. The design applied in this research was descriptive qualitative research. Meanwhile, the techniques of data collection were observation, field note, and interview. The researcher analyzed the data by Miles and Huberman model, namely data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The result of the research showed that there were various learning strategies used by the students. There were meta-cognitive strategies, cognitive strategies, and social-affective strategies. They chose those strategies based on some reasons, such as because they wanted to check their language to be a good language in speaking, they felt easier to get the ideas in speaking, and they knew their ability in speaking. So, the strategies were very important to help students in learning process especially in learning English speaking. A good strategy also helped the students to learn fun and creative, so that the students would feel interested in learning and they could practice their speaking.

Abstract

This research was aimed to find out whether using sketch word strategy was effective in teaching vocabulary. In this case, the researcher used quantitative data approach by using experimental design. There were two classes at seventh grade of SMPN 3 Nisam North Aceh as the sample of this research. There were class VII/1 as experimental consist of 24 students and VII/3 as control group consist of 22 students. In experimental group, the researcher used skecth word strategy in teaching vocabulary. After teaching learning process for three meetings, the researcher gave post-test. The result was shown that the students’ achievement in experimental group was higher than control group. It was proved by the average score from pre-test of experimental group was 64,5 and control group was 53,04. Furthermore, the result of post-test of experimental group was 83,5 and control group was 69,86. It could be concluded that using sketch word effective in teaching vocabulary.

Abstract

This research was aimed to find out whether using chunking strategy was effective in teaching reading comprehension. In this case, the researcher used quantitative data approach by using experimental design. There were two classes at ninth grade of SMPN 1 Nisam North Aceh as the sample of this research. There were class IX/3 as experimental consist of 24 students and IX/2 as control group consist of 22 students. In experimental group, the researcher used chunking strategy in teaching reading comprehension. After teaching learning process for three meetings, the researcher gave post-test. The result was shown that the students’ achievement in experimental group was higher than control group. It was proved by the average score from pre-test of experimental group was 66,8 and control group was 64,5. Furthermore, the result of post-test of experimental group was 83,2 and control group was 70,3. It could be concluded that using chunking strategy was effective in teaching reading comprehension.

Abstract

This research was conducted to find out the difficulties faced by students in understanding recount text, and the factors that cause these difficulties. To obtain data in this study, the researcher used two data collection techniques, namely observation and interview. Observation is used to collect data in class during the teaching learning process. Interview is intended to identify the causes of the students’ obstacles in understanding recount text. There were 6 students at eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Nisam who were used as subjects in this research. 2 students who have high academic achievement, 2 medium and 2 low. The result showed that they had many difficulties in understanding recount text, both internal and external factors. The internal factor is the lack of motivation. Besides, they also have difficulties in understanding the sentence structure in recount text. In addition, they also lack of vocabulary mastery, it makes them difficult and take a long time to understand a text in English. The external factors that cause their difficulties in understanding English texts are the lack of attention from their parents towards their achievement, especially towards English achievement. They also only have a little time to learn and practice English at their home because they are busy with other activities. The lack of supporting facilities such as English reading materials and dictionaries, it is also one of the factors causing students’ difficulties in understanding recount text.

Abstract

Many teenagers spend time with activities that are not useful. Therefore, parents are required to be able to direct their children to a good path. The purpose of this study was to find out and describe the pattern of parental approaches in guiding positive activities for adolescents in Sumbok Rayeuk Village, North Aceh. Teenagers in the transition phase need full guidance and supervision from their parents, starting from activities at home to outside the home. Parents must always be ready to supervise teenagers in the use of mobile phones and their friendship environment. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. Sources of data in this study were parents in Sumbok Rayeuk Village, North Aceh. Data obtained through interview techniques, documentation, and observation. The results of the study showed that the approach taken by parents in guiding positive activities for Youth in Sumbok Rayeuk Village, Nibong Aceh Utara District was carried out using a communicative approach, reward and punishment patterns and giving exemplary examples to their children. The obstacles faced by parents include the use of mobile phones that do not know a time limit and where adolescents interact with their peers who are beyond the reach of their parents.
