Abstract

Memorizing structure pattern is very tiring and often resulting in failure. Learners often try to adapt it in conversation and writing, but it sometimes ends up with unsatisfactory. The process of implementing grammar-translation methods to explain how to structure patterns built and used leads learners to understand it clearly and it could decrease the level of confusion significantly. Furthermore, to make the patterns learners learned to stay some longer in their minds, they can notice the grammar content in short stories. The use of online short stories could ease them to read more to support noticing. Thus, learning grammar pattern boosted by the grammar-translation method and using online short stories to notice grammatical pattern could develop students’ proficiency in implementing grammar both in spoken and written.

Abstract

Practicing speaking is very important for students to exchange ideas with others. Although having learned English for the years, many EFL students face problems in delivering the ideas orally. To overcome this kind of problem, an expo de facto research was conducted by observing the students’ scores in two subjects grammar and speaking. The students were in the first semester of the English education major. The research is to find out the material used in teaching grammar to develop speaking learning. To satisfy the aim of this study, the mixed-method was implemented. The data was analyzed qualitatively and confirmed quantitatively by the applying t-test.  From the analysis could be drawn that Using translation-method, podcast, noticing, and conversation in applying the communicative-grammar method enhances the students’ competence in speaking. It is very helpful for the teachers and students to implement it in learning grammar and speaking. It also provides the idea to other researchers to dig some deeper innovation in the same field.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe way to persuade students to read texts is sometimes frustrating. They are reluctant to explore a lot of knowledge by reading some books or articles. This kind of condition is not good for the students to increase their perspective of knowledge. Experiencing such a thing, the teachers feel dismayed whenever see the result of their students’ reading test is low. Many teachers try many methods to adapt in order to invite their students to get involved in reading practice. It is very important to find out a proper way to imply a method to enhance the students reading the material accordingly.  Nevertheless, songs are parts of life all around the world people love to listen. Meanwhile, most of the students are fond of singing or listening to the songs. They copy the singers’ utterances by reading lyrics to express their intention to others. Moreover, learning lyrics means to read the extensive reading. So that by posing lyrics often to discuss with makes students be accustomed to comprehending the content of the various texts. Step by step they start loving reading.  Finally, their competence to grab the message of the texts is enhanced.

Abstract

The short story could be the media to teach something to the readers. “Two old cherry trees still in bloom” for example, is written by Saikaku. Through his work, Saikaku would like to show the readers the implementation of 4 identity-statuses. He brought the readers into critical reading to help them find the identity. To analyze the 4 identity status content in his short story, the coding analysis was used. By analyzing, it could be seen that 4 identity-status categories comprise identity diffusion, identity foreclosure, identity moratorium, and identity achievement. Each status has two codes like uncertainty and unknown in identity diffusion, admiration and sympathy in identity foreclosure, struggle and chasing in identity moratorium, and settle and completion in identity achievement. Through the analysis, Saikaku shows the readers that to harmonize oneself as an individual and community member, someone needs to develop his curiosity through implementing identity moratorium to satisfy his lacking of background knowledge. Moreover, developing a sense of love is very essential to keep someone digging something out sufficiently through identity foreclosure to reach the ultimate goal of life.

Abstract

Writing is one of the language skills. Nevertheless, most EFL students got a problem with writing. It provokes their hindrance in learning English. The lack of vocabulary and competence in adapting grammar rules are the agent to worsen their writing ability. Comprehending the text is a kind of way to help the students build their vocabulary knowledge. The words they learn can be adapted to study grammar through GTM. They are essential to better their practical ability in descriptive text. It is the implementation of the SFL theory. Practicing descriptive text supported by adapting reading comprehension and GTM develops the students’ competence to paraphrase the text. Paraphrasing through SFL enhances writing skills.

Abstract

The young learners are very potential to grow their knowledge earlier. By having sufficient knowledge in their heads, they have a great opportunity to develop any other knowledge. English, however, is an important language in the world. By using English, the students could know more about anything. There are many kinds of method used by teachers to teach young learners to speak English. The teacher is often trying very hard to bring the students into a learning atmosphere. Indeed, Both the teacher and students want to get the expected goal. On the other hand, the condition turns to be uneasy when the students are reluctant to respond to their teacher’s questions as feedback. It is an important part for the teacher to find another method to help students active. Moreover, vocabulary building is an essential part of delivering the intention to others. By having enough vocabulary list in the students’ head, it would ease them to choose the right words to convey. Hence, the use of an electronics dictionary could satisfy the students’ needs. By implementing it while learning grammar and reading, the students could better their vocabulary and pronunciation skills to conduct speaking.

Abstract

Abstract

Learning reading results in a disappointment for many EFL learners. They get a problem to understand the passage about. It seems that they do not have a sufficient vocabulary list and constructing sentence ability. They faced a problem in the situational and cultural contexts. The mastery of the two contexts leads students to gain a make meaning. It is a way to assist the students to understand the text and to write sentences. To help the students cope with their difficulties, analyzing a novel is promising. By analyzing the text, the students learn to build vocabulary and sentences. It is part of the situational context. This research used a novel “I am a Prodigy” as the data to be analyzed. Analyzing that kind of data is implementing cultural context. It applies the situational context into a written product. To analyze the content of the text, a rubric was applied. The postmodernist viewpoints are the categories used in the rubric. The result of the analysis was the detailed description of semantically and pragmatically to interpret the words and sentences in the text. It builds the students’ vocabulary and syntax knowledge. It means that it can build the readers’ competence in a situational context. Furthermore, in commenting on the data, it leads them to develop their cultural context. This kind of result is very beneficial for the students and teachers to enhance the teaching-learning reading process in the classroom. Abstract

Speaking is a form of practicing how to communicate ideas. The students can convey their intentions by speaking. Many high school students struggled to articulate their thoughts. Their low vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar skills are what cause it. The teacher employed podcast resources in the teaching-learning process to address these issues. The instructor went over the basic grammar to put it into practice. In order to make it stick in their minds, the teacher instructed the student to look for the corresponding grammar in the transcript. Then, in order to expand their vocabulary, the student translate it. To improve the students' listening abilities, an audio recording was employed. The transcript was then read aloud. The students' newly acquired information is put to use in the text and audio descriptions of the images. The students took a pre-test before beginning this treatment, and they finished a post-test at the conclusion of it. A mixed-method approach was used to analyze the data that was found. It may be inferred that using podcast content improved the students' speaking proficiency. This kind of research can be used byteachers to teach relevant subjects. It also motivates other scholars to conduct deeper investigation.
