This was a quasi-experimental study aimed at examining whether there was a difference in effectiveness between problem-based learning using a scientific approach and problem-based learning using a problem-solving approach in learning in class IX at SMP Negeri 3 Pangsid. The population was all class IX students in SMP Negeri 3 Pangsid and the sample consisted of two classes, namely class IX.1 and class IX.2 as the experimental classes. The data collection consisted of learning achievement, activity, and response of students. The results showed that students? Mathematics learning achievement in the first-class experiment was in high category with the mean score of 84.38; students? activity was in a good category, and student?s response on learning was positive. The conclusion was the problem-based learning using a scientific approach was fairly effective. The students? Mathematics learning achievement in the second experiment class was in high category with the mean score of 79.58, students? activity was in a good category, and students? response to learning was positive. The conclusion was the problem-based learning using a problem-solving approach was fairly effective. The result of the hypothesis test at significance level ? = 0.05 with the t-test showed that there were significant differences in the effectiveness, in terms of learning outcomes between students who were taught problem-based learning using a scientific approach and the ones who were taught using a problem-solving approach.
