Abstract

Crimes can occur anywhere, anytime, and to anyone so that they can make them prisoners. Public perceptions about an excessive inmate have a negative effect on prisoners' perceptions in the community about themselves and are vulnerable to mental health disorders such as stress. Stress prevention strategies one of which is family support. This research uses an analytic survey method design with cross-sectional approach. This study aims to determine the relationship between family support and stress levels of inmates at the Binjai Class IIA Penitentiary. The population of this research is 264 men. The sample of this study was taken using purposive sampling. This sample of this study consisted of 72 inmates at the Binjai Class IIA Penitentiary. Data were collected using the DASS 42 questionnaire with a stress level scale and family support using a list of statements. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test. From these results, it can be concluded that there is a relationship between family support and the stress level of inmates at the Binjai Class IIA Penitentiary (p-value = 0,000 <α 0.05). Based on this research, it is suggested that the correctional institutions increase programs of activities that benefit prisoners such as adding facilities and infrastructure to channel prisoners' hobbies so that stress experienced can be reduced.
