Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the effect of the problem-based learning (PBL) model assisted by the HOTS Instrument-based PhET simulation on high school students to improve learning outcomes at a high cognitive level. This research is included in the quantitative descriptive. The method used is a pre-experimental design. The design used is one group pretest-posttest design. The subject of this study was class X students, totalling 26 students. The sampling technique uses the total sample technique and the data collection technique to test and observe techniques. The test used is in the form of 10 essay questions to train students to think at a higher level. As well as the HOTS instrument in the form of 3 essay questions for each meeting. The results of this study indicate that the PBL learning model assisted by the HOTS Instrument-based PhET simulation for high school students improves student learning outcomes, especially students' ability to solve high-level questions (HOTS). This is evidenced by students experiencing an increase in cognitive knowledge learning outcomes during learning three meetings with the acquisition of N-Gain from the pretest and posttest average of 59.10, which is more than 30 and less than 70 so that the increase in student learning outcomes is included in the moderate category. The N-Gain results show that students' mastery of the material is better than conventional learning. Thus, learning is more effective and can assist students in dealing with the demands of completeness and 21st-century competence.
