Kata kunci: lahan kering, air tanah, bioirigasi, tanaman hydraulic lift Hydraulic Lift Phenomenon and Prospects of Bioirrigation Development in Dryland Farming in Indonesia ABSTRACTIt is estimated that the national agriculture in the future will increasingly rely on suboptimal land, given the productive land conversion to non-agricultural sector is increasingly out of control with the conversion rate to ± 132 thousand hectares per year. Of the 91.9 million ha of national suboptimal around 76.6% in the form of dry land. Limitations of water is a major constraint on the dry land agriculture, and lack of technical irrigation investments led to most of the dry land still dependent on rain water source. Bioirrigation is an alternative dry land water management by utilizing the ability of certain plant hydraulic lift to lift water from the soil layers in the more humid and recharge groundwater at dry shallow layer. Furthermore, the results of recharging groundwater in the shallow layers can be used to meet the needs of transpiration and growth, both for plants that do hydraulic lifts and intercrops (cash crops) that planted in the vicinity. Study of hydraulic lift is still limited at the level of ecology, and for leading the implementation in the agricultural sector need to consider the technical aspects such as the selection of a combination of the type of crop, crop architecture, the presence of water in the soil, soil physical properties, and strengthening the function of hydraulic lift components. The purpose of this review is to provide an alternative perspective of research and development on bioirrigation as water management and utilization prospects in dryland farming in Indonesia.Key word: dry land, soil water, bioirrigation, hydraulic lift crops
