Abstract

Linguistic competence and effective communication are essential for providing optimum care for patients. Cardiac care is among the high-alert settings that require highly proficient nurses to be attentive and provide the best possible care for patients with heart problems. This research aims to measure the perceptions of non-native nurses towards the correlation between upgrading their English language proficiency level and providing optimum nursing care for cardiac patients. To this end, a mixed-method research design, qualitative and quantitative, was adopted in the study. First, a questionnaire was constructed and disseminated to 210 Egyptian nurses working at the Magdi Yacoub Foundation (MYF) in Aswan, Egypt. Yet, 127 nurses responded to the questionnaire. Secondly, to ensure the reliability of the research results, observation and interviews with a selected number of questionnaire takers were used as data collection instruments. Findings revealed that upgrading the English language proficiency level is believed to contribute to enhancing the performance of cardiac care nurses, their professionalism, and their learning autonomy. In addition, a taxonomy of the nurses’ uses of English for Specific Purposes has been constructed during the study.  The proposed taxonomy was constructed from the data from the questionnaire, the interview, and the observation. It can be used to identify nurses’ needs when designing English-for-nurses courses. It is recommended that further research is conducted to investigate the correlation between the level of English language proficiency and the performance of nurses in other medical sub-domains.

Abstract

Whether one chooses to acknowledge or disregard its significance, nature has always been part of us. In an anthropogenic era, the dire state of the environment has made it an increasingly concerning topic of discussion among us. Nature has been extensively examined in numerous scholarly discussions ranging from secular to religious perspectives. This paper examines how nature plays a crucial role in helping us understand the relationship between God and humans, as portrayed in the Bible. The Bible being a religious text exists with very specific purposes. That being said, elements of nature were also used very specifically in the Bible. Most presently available scholarly research focuses on reading the significance of nature elements from religious perspectives. However, this research employs the eco-spirituality theory to examine the book of Jonah from the Bible to determine the relationship between Jonah, God, and nature. Through this secular perspective, the aim is to show that elements of nature have been carefully woven into narratives to signify various meanings. Furthermore, this research aims to identify how God communicates with humans through nature, which eventually helps to establish various forms of relationships between humans and nature. Through these newly formed relationships, we can understand the authority of a Creator and the consequences of obedience and submission. All these highlight the importance of co-existence between humans and nature, and examining the Bible through the lens of eco-spirituality perpetuates the relevance of the Bible to 21st-century readers.

Abstract

Some 7468 domestic violence cases were reported in 2021, which was an increase of 42% from 5260 cases in 2020, as stated by the Malaysian Ministry of Women, Family, and Community Development. This informs us that this type of violence is becoming more rampant every year. As such, as educators and teachers, we must help to create awareness of domestic violence among our students. This paper aims to explore strategies for teaching the topic and also present the challenges that may emerge in the classroom. This paper will also focus on the importance of raising awareness about domestic violence among secondary school students.

Abstract

This article focuses on the analysis of the semantic structure of the Indonesian ‘die’ verbs. The lexicon variations for the Indonesian ‘die‘ verbs depend on to whom and in what way it is perceived when it happens. The Indonesian ‘die’ verbs have their meaning which can be expressed through the study of the Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) theoretical framework developed by Goddard and Wierzbicka (2013). The method used is a descriptive method with a qualitative research form. The data analysis technique used four steps including determining the semantic prime,  looking for the derivation of meaning, determining polysemy based on the object,  and paraphrasing meaning. To analyze the meaning of ‘die’ in Indonesian, the data used in this article were collected from the entry word 'mati' obtained from the dictionary https://kbbi.kemdikbud.go.id/entri/mati. The  results  showed  that  there  were  17 lexicons (meninggal dunia, tutup usia, wafat, berpulang, gugur, mangkat,  berlalu, berkalang tanah, berputih tulang, dipanggil Tuhan, mati, mampus, tewas, binasa, koit, modar, and jangkang) reffering  to the  ‘die’  concept, which were then grouped into two categories based  on  the entity and  the  result of  which the  ‘die’ concept  was  implemented.

Abstract

This article critically analyzes Golding's Lord of the Flies to investigate how human nature was allegorically depicted by constructing an almost parallel fictional world to his contemporary time. In this paper, I argued that Golding allegorically exhibited the basic human nature of his contemporary time by experimenting with the schoolboys on the Pacific Ocean, which unveiled the brutal and uncivilized nature of schoolboys, and that such activities as depicted in the novel resembled the brutal and savage nature of the men of his time. The methodology I employed in this study was a close analysis of the primary text to examine how Golding used allegory to uncover the basic nature of human beings, and I analyzed secondary resources related to the study to support my arguments. The analysis identified that Golding depicted savagery and animalistic human nature through allegory, which questioned the traditional understanding of human nature as civilized and moral, and his experience of involving himself in the war and working as a school teacher helped him in reflecting such brutal and uncivilized events of his time. He provided a wider space and various layers of secondary meanings for characters, setting, and events in the story, which resonated in many respects with the events of his contemporary time. In addition, this study unpacked the fact that savagery existed inside the human heart and manifested in a lack of guardianship and civilizational forces in human beings. This paper will be useful in exploring the novel for a better understanding of human nature.

Abstract

Since the Nigerian Civil War in 1970, there has been a mutual suspicion among its three major ethnic groups, Hausa (in the North), Igbo (East) and Yoruba (West). This is not only manifest in their socio-political life but has also generated strife and hate speech, typified by context-sensitive strategies. This paper highlights the key group-motivated strategies of framing and polarisation utilized in the hate speeches raised by different groups in the Nigerian political discourse. The 2017 Kaduna declaration by a northern union (Arewa Youths), threatening to evict the Igbo living in the northern region, and response texts from other unions to the declaration constitute the data. These were subjected to content analysis with insights from van Dijk’s Ideological Representation and Halliday and Matthiessen’s Transitivity Theory. The findings reveal a self-preservationist frame, which is polarised in the Self/Other pattern.
