Abstract

A study was made on 114 pupils from a school for the mentally retarded in Bandung. In 50 subjects the length ratio between the upper and the lower segment of the body were more than one; of 44 subjects (32 debils, 11 imbecils, 1 borderline debil-imbecil) we found 2 with hypertelorism, 1 with dry and rough skin, and 1 with gross and fine motor abnormalities. Dental development and bone ages were within normal limits. No rise in serum cholesterol and changes in NTR (Normalized Thyroxine Ratio) were found. T4 (thyroxine) values were within normal limits. Radioactive iodine uptake and scanning of 42 subjects showed hyperplasia in 32 and euthyroidism in 5 subjects. Three subjects suggested a possible iodine contamination, 2 subjects with uptake of more than 50%, one of them showed adenoma (toxic?) on scanning; on the other one scanning was not done. Hypothyroidism was not found; 32 subjects which showed hyperplasia were suggestive of active thyroid. Further studies should be done in another sample of population to trace the problems of hypothyroidism in childhood.

Abstract

The average height and weight of 4.082 children visiting the General Hospital (RSUPP), Medan, throughout 1969-1974 were higher than that reported by Sukonto et al. (1939). However, the heights and weights of school children at 5 to 6 years as reported by Hartaman et al. (1973) were higher than our findings in this study. Compared with the U.S. growth charts the height of these children was very close to the 10th percentile, while the weight was between the 3rd and the 10th percentile of the Harvard standard. At birth the average weight was very close to the 50th percentile of the Harvard standard, at one year it was very close to (below) the 10th percentile, while at 2-5 years it was slightly above the 3rd percentile.

Abstract

Urinary tract infection in infancy when not early recognized can frequently cause parenchymal damage of the kidney. Symptoms like nausea, vomiting, fever and diarrhea in most instances resemble those of gastroenteritis. A survey conducted from November to December 1975 on 25 infants admitted to the Dr. Soetomo Hospital Surabaya with acute gastroenteritis showed an incidence of b1acteriuria in 8 patients (32%) with a colony count of more than 10^5/mm³ urine, of which 6 were of E. Coli type and 2 of Aerobacter Aerogenes type. Related to this fairly high incidence of bacteriuria in gastroenteritis, further evaluations of the exact role of urinary tract infection in causing infantile diarrhea diseases are mandatory.

Abstract

During the period of 5 years, from the beginning of 1971 up tp the end of 1975, out of 2054 sick children seen in the Pediatric Outpatient Division of the Department of Cardiology Medical School, University of lndonesia/Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital Jakarta, 1073 patients were found to have congenital heant disease. Ten out of these 1073 CHD patients have been diagnosed as Tricuspid Atresia on the clinioal basis, giving the incidence of 0.93% of all CHD, of whom 5 were boys and 5 were girls, mean age being 36.5% months (range 2 months to 12 years). Hemodynamic studies have been done to 3 of the 10 patients, all of which confirmed the diagnosis. Two children went to surgery. Anatomic and radiologic classification and types of the disease in those 3 children and some clinical aspects and hemodynamic studies are discussed. It is stressed that early recognition and surgical  intervention are indicated, and still should be improved.

Abstract

A study was made to assess neonatal jaundice by icterometer compared with serum bilirubin concentration, which was determined by Mercko photometric test, on 98 newborns with jaundice born in the Dr. Hasan Sadikin General Hospital, Bandung, throughout October 1975 until March 1976. A good correlation between bilirubin concentration as determined by the icterometer and actual serum bilirubin concentration was found, so that the icterometer could be used in Indonesian newborns. None of the icterometer values grade 3 or less had actual serum bilirubin concentrations more than 15 mg.%, so that grade 3 or less did not necessarily require additional serum bilirubin determination. On the contrary 46.7% and 81.8% of newborns with icterometer values of grades 3½ and 4 respectively have bilirubin concentrations more than 15 mg.%. Therefore, grade 3½ or more required further photometric bilirubin determination with a view to possible treatment.

Abstract

A severe variety of ichthyosis fetalis or Harlequin fetus is reported with a brief review of the literature. It seemed that our case, Tadjuddin's (Jakarta), and Wong Hock Boon's (Singapore) assure us that the Harlequin fetus can also be seen in the tropics and in all traces where the ichthyosis gene is present.
