Abstract

ABSTRACTOne of the pioneering novels in English literature, Robinson Crusoe, tells of the story of a man who was thirsty for an adventure, finally made his destiny in an uninhabited island. Written by Daniel Defoe, this novel was said to have similarities with one of the stories in Islamic culture, Hayy Ibn Yaqzan, written by Ibn Tufayl. Hayy was narrated living in an unknown jungle, had nature as his best friends seeking to find the true meaning of life. The purpose of this research is to explore the meanings of the two novels written by authors with different cultural backgrounds and to analyze the meanings based on five reading codes proposed by Roland Barthes in Semiotic analysis; hermeneutic code, proairetic code, semic code, symbolic code and cultural / referential code. Roland Barthes developed this application of structural narrative analysis by splitting the text into lexias and grouping them into the codes. At the end, it was found out that authorial background, cultural representation and religious views of each author are the aspects which made the work unique from one to another. Meanwhile, the similarities are found in some aspects; spirituality, survival and progress,  . Both authors present their own authenticity that it is difficult to justify whether Defoe took his reference from Hayy Ibn Yaqzan to create Robinson Crusoe.

Abstract

The taboo word is a word that is avoided because it is felt to have a 'strong' meaning, so that some types of taboo words cannot just be spoken by anyone or anywhere. To overcome this, one usually chooses to use other words that are safer. This paper aims to determine the types of taboo words in the film “Blindspotting” based on Ronald Wardhaugh’s theory which divides them into several categories, namely: sex, death, excreation, bodily functions, religious matters, politics, mother-in-law, animals, and cultural matter, as well as the function of each taboo word in the film which he divides it into four functions, such as: showing contempt, drawing attention, being provocative or aggressive, and mocking authority. The method used to analyze this film is a qualitative descriptive method where the researcher describes, analyzes, and discusses the data in the film as it is in narrative form. The results showed that there are seven categories of taboo words in the film, included: sex, death, excreation, bodily functions, religious matters, animals, and cultural matter. The sex and bodily function are the most used category in the film, while the cultural matters is the least used. Of the four functions of Ronald Wardhaugh, All of them are found in the film.

Abstract

Critical thinking is now often regarded as a necessary component of writing abilities. If this is confirmed, it is crucial to highlight students' ability to think critically to develop their writing skills. The purpose of this study is to investigate if students' critical thinking skills affect their ability to write argumentative texts using a quantitative approach and a predictive design. The population in this study amounted to 62 students of a private vocational school in Jakarta. Samples were taken of as many as 25 students using the random sampling technique. Both data were obtained by conducting a critical thinking test that adapted the Watson-Glaser theory and an argumentative text writing test. The data analysis used is the Lilliefors test, linearity, and analysis of variance. This study shows that students with higher critical thinking test scores get higher scores in writing argumentative texts and vice versa. Moreover, there is a significant effect of students' critical thinking skills on their argumentative writing skills. Critical thinking ability is one factor that supports students' success in developing written ideas so that the right stimulus is needed to bring up students' critical thinking skills.
