Abstract

This research tries to analyze the women’s struggle towards stereotypes in the novel The Case of The Missing Marquess: An Enola Holmes Mystery. The objectives of this research are to identify, classify and analyze the phenomena of the historical picture of stereotypes for women in the 18th century pictured in the novel, and how the women struggled with the stereotypes in it. This was qualitative research with descriptive method. The researcher utilized the liberal feminism theory by Mary Wollstonecraft in analyzing the data. First, the researchers tried to find out how was the historical women's struggles at that time and after that found out characters who struggled with stereotypes in the novel. The result of this research was the character shows how she struggles to find her mother in terms of seizing the right to vote for women, and Enola, the main character, changes people's views about women at that time. Enola was also an illustration that not all women had to followed the rules or became a standard for a good figure, but it was freedom and courage that could change people's views of women that women could also do things without the helped of men and women were entitled to the same rights as men.

Abstract

Keterampilan menulis kreatif merupakan salah satu jenis keterampilan berbahasa yang dituntut untuk dikuasai oleh siswa. Sayangnya, unsur penting menulis kreatif seperti berpikir kritis, kepekaan emosi, bakat, dan daya imajinatif siswa masih cukup memprihatinkan sehingga perlu dipacu agar memuluskan proses penulisan. Tujuan kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini adalah untuk membuka wawasan peserta tentang manfaat menulis kreatif melalui penyampaian informasi, an memotivasi peserta supaya mereka memanfaatkan karya tulisnya. Kegiatan ini berbentuk gelar wicara daring melalui aplikasi zoom meeting pada tanggal 22 Desember 2021 di Universitas Bina Darma dengan tema menulis kreatif. Kegiatan ini diikuti oleh 108 peserta yang terdiri dari pelajar, mahasiswa dan masyarakat umum di Indonesia. Peserta gelar wicara tidak hanya berasal dari Provinsi Sumatera Selatan saja, namun juga dari Jayapura, Sulawesi Selatan, Jambi, Jawa Barat, Padang, dan Riau. Hasil kegiatan ini menunjukkan bahwa peserta mendapatkan ilmu baru khususnya di bidang menulis kreatif, meningkatnya antusiasme peserta yang menunjukkan bahwa para peserta tercerahkan dan dapat menyerap penjelasan dengan sangat baik, menumbuhkan minat dan motivasi siswa, mahasiswa, dan masyarakat umum terhadap pentingnya Literasi di era industri 5.0 ini. Peserta juga diarahkan agar dapat mandiri dan memperoleh income dari tulisan-tulisan kreatif yang tidak hanya mereka tulis, namun juga mereka coba publikasikan di berbagai media.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the conflicts happened to the main character, Chris, in the movie Into the Wild. This conflict then results the self defense mechanism done by Chris to cope with the problem. The method used was qualitative with descriptive approach. To collect the data, firstly the researchers watched the movie several times and then read the transcript of the movie to get the comprehensive understanding. Meanwhile, in analyzing the data, some notes related to the research problem taken before were reduced and finally concluded. The research results are Chris faced both the internal conflict and external conflict in the movie. The internal conflict is related to the psychological turmoil while the external conflict tends to physical and social conflict. The entire conflict faced by Chris finally led him to do self-defense mechanism, namely repression and displacement. As the conclusion, all the conflicts encountered by Chris both internal and external, resulted the repression and displacement as his self-defense mechanism to deal with the conflicts.

Abstract

One of the components in music or song which can be used as an access to the image of women is song lyrics. Woman image presents mental, spiritual, and daily behavior expression by women in many aspects; physical and psychological as women's self-image, family as well as community traits as part of social images. Through language written as song lyrics, a discourse can be expressed according to what the songwriter feels and thinks. The objective of this study is to find out how the image of women which becomes a stereotype is represented in the lyrics of the song "Pretty Girl" by Maggie Lindemann. This study was a qualitative study using the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach with Norman Fairclough's model. The model was used to analyze the feminist discourses contained in the lyrics of the song "Pretty Girl" by Maggie Lindemann. The analysis found that the song "Pretty Girl" sung by Maggie Lindemann contained discourses about Maggie Lindemann's rebuttal of women stereotypes.

Abstract

Song can be used as a medium of expression because it expel feelings and thoughts as well as a medium of entertainment. Song lyrics created by composers often use distinctive language to create aesthetic effects, such as figurative language and imagery. Unfortunately, the use of it often makes listeners not fully aware of the song meaning and not feeling the emotions that are actually intended to be conveyed. This study aims to reveal the meanings and messages implied in the lyrics of Katy Perry's song Roar through an analysis of figurative language and imagery from a feminism perspective. The method used is descriptive qualitative through the process of data reduction, data presentation, and the last is drawing conclusions. The results showed that there were 7 types of figurative language; simile, metaphor, personification, synecdoche, symbol, paradox, and hyperbole. In addition, Katy also uses 4 types of imagery; visual imagery, auditory imagery, organic imagery, and kinesthetic imagery. All the figurative language and imagery represent Katy's feelings and struggles against the downturn during her relationship with her ex-lover and managed to get up hence she can love herself. This is the message that Katy wants to convey to all women in the world that they are precious beings who have choices in their lives and are able to stand alone without any help from men.Keywords: feminism; figurative language; imagery; Roar song; women empowerment.

Abstract

Kemajuan teknologi informasi haruslah diadopsi oleh penyelenggara pendidikan pada semua level (termasuk sekolah dasar) untuk meningkatkan kualitas bahan ajar yang menarik bagi para peserta didiknya. SD Negeri 75 Palembang merupakan salah satu sekolah yang memiliki kepedulian akan pesatnya kemajuan teknologi informasi yang dapat dilibatkan pada dunia pendidikan mereka. Microsoft PowerPoint 365 merupakan salah satu software pengolah presentasi yang memiliki banyak kegunaan mulai dari kemampuan presentasi biasa sampai dengan presentasi berbasiskan audio video yang menarik. Video hasil olahan Microsoft PowerPoint 365 selanjutnya bisa diupload ke YouTube sehingga bisa lebih mudah disebarkan kepada para peserta didiknya. Melalui workshop pembuatan materi ajar menggunakan Microsoft PowerPoint 365 para Pengajar dan Staf di SD Negeri 75 Palembang memiliki tambahan keahlian dalam membuat materi ajar yang menarik sampai jadi suatau video pembelajaran. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa peserta workshop dapat menangkap materi workshop dengan baik dan tertarik untuk melanjutkan workshop selanjutnya dengan menggunakan software-software presentasi atau pembelajaran lainnya.

Abstract

Salah satu ujung tombak penerimaan devisa bagi negara Indonesia adalah melalui program pemerintah ‘’Wonderful Indonesia’’ atau biasa lebih dikenal dengan ‘’Pesona Indonesia’’ yang berhasil menarik ribuan wisatawan, baik wisatawan lokal maupun wisatawan asing. Tempat wisata yang kerap dikunjungi oleh wisatawan asing maupun lokal ialah Museum. Museum adalah salah satu aset yang dimiliki oleh negara atas peninggalan-peninggalan terdahulu yang harus dirawat, dijaga maupun dilestarikan agar nilai dan makna yang terkandung tidak akan pernah hilang. Tujuan kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini adalah meningkatkan kualitas kepariwisataan dan penerjemahan bahasa Inggris di beberapa sudut Museum, label-label pameran, label arca-arca dan brosur dengan menggunakan teknik tourism dan translation agar lebih mudah dipahami oleh wisatawan lokal maupun asing sehingga mengalami jumlah peningkatan wisatawan setiap tahun. Kegiatan ini berbentuk pendampingan kepariwisataan dan penerjemahan Bahasa Inggris di Museum Negeri Sumatera Selatan pada bulan September-Desember 2022. Hasil kegiatan ini menunjukkan bahwa 1) penerjemahan tulisan di sudut-sudut Museum, label pameran, label arca, dan brosur berbahasa Inggris menjadi lebih efektif dan informative, 2) para wisatawan lokal dari Jakarta dan wisatawan asing dari Malaysia memperoleh informasi yang lebih rinci dan akurat mengenai nilai-nilai budaya dan sejarah khususnya kota Palembang.

Abstract

Tujuan dari kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah memberikan motivasi bagi anak usia sekolah dasar untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbahasa mereka dengan menulis puisi. Kegiataan ini juga diharapkan dapat mengembangkan kreatifitas anak melalui proses penciptaan puisi dengan menggunakan metode akrostik. Dalam proses pembimbingan menulis puisi menggunakan teknik akrostik kepada para siswa kelas 6 di SD Negeri 26 Palembang, tim pengabdian mengulas tentang unsur pembangun puisi kemudian mengarahkan siswa untuk menentukan judul puisi yang didasarkan pada pengamatan terhadap benda-benda dan peristiwa yang ada di sekitar siswa. Kegiatan yang diikuti oleh sekitar 30 siswa ini memperlihatkan hasil bahwa para peserta menyukai teknik akrostik karena memudahkan mereka untuk menemukan gagasan atau ide puisi sesuai dengan tema yang telah ditentuan. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa teknik akrostik dalam penulisan puisi merupakan metode yang efektif untuk diterapkan dalam pembelajaran bahasa.

Abstract

This research analyzes the different types of speech acts in the movie "The School for Good and Evil" by Soman Chainani, as performed by seventeen distinct characters. While the film offers a captivating narrative, it also delves into instances where characters wrestle with understanding the deeper meanings of others' utterances. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, this study meticulously examines the dialogues. Data collection techniques encompass a thorough examination of the movie script and an analysis of characters’ gestures. Findings highlight a diverse range of speech acts pivotal to the movie's storytelling. All forms of speech acts are evident, with a marked prominence of illocutionary acts such as ‘asking questions’ and ‘giving commands. Other examples include ‘giving directions’ and ‘representing information’. Notably, the identified perlocutionary acts are largely non-literal. The classification further underscores the consistent use of ‘directives’ and ‘representatives. The illocutionary acts in the movie cover a breadth of communicative functions, from querying, summoning, and instructing to expressing sentiments and stating positions.

Abstract

This research discusses the traumatic memory of Desmond Doss and analyzes Herndon’s narrative reconstruction of Desmond’s traumatic memory in his novel. This research uses the post-memory theory by Hirsch, through Freytag’s pyramid approach. The qualitative method and literary memory are use in this research. Data were acquired from the documentary interview, and the paragraphs that existed on every page of the novel. The researchers collected the date through four steps: exploration, reduction, abstraction, and read intensively. This research reveals that Desmond Doss experienced seven traumatic memories; he was frightened of the gun, intimidated, humiliated, lost his friend, Japanese Army strategies, and the aftermath. To make it entertaining to read, Herndon caught Desmond’s traumatic memory and reconstructed the narratives into his novel. To fulfill Herndon's and the reader’s satisfaction, he exaggerates and lessens some of the actual events. The purpose of narrative reconstruction in this novel was to modify what the author could not do in the past and fix it in the novel through his imaginative investment, along with highlighting the heroic story of Desmond Doss.
