Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the effectiveness of Skimming-Scanning Strategy in improving students reading comprehension. It covered students’ literal, inferential, critical comprehension in three types of text. They were narrative, descriptive, and news item texts. The research applied quasi experimental design. The subject of the research was the second grade students of SMK Darussalam Makassar. The data collected were the students’ reading achievement through test (pretest and posttest). This research was divided into two groups, experimental and control group, the groups consisted of 28 and 27 students, respectively. The result of the data analysis showed that t-test was higher than t-table (6.373>2.000) or P-value (Sig.) was smaller than alpha (0.000 < 0.05). It meant that mean score of the experimental group was higher than the control group.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out whether or not the implementation of 2013 curriculum give effects to the development of students’ English achievement at the second grade of SMAN 1 Alla’ Enrekang. This research was a descriptive design using observation, questionnaires, and documentation conducted at the second year of SMAN 1 Alla’ Enrekang class MIA 1 and IIS 2 in academic year of 2014/2015. The total sample of this research consisted of 61 students. The data were collected through observation in the class when the learning process conducted to know how the implementation of the 2013 curriculum and questionnaire as supporting data from observation while documentation to know the students’ learning achievement that was analyzed by descriptive and statistic. The data analysis and interpretation indicated (1) The implementation of the 2013 curriculum in SMAN 1 Alla’ Enrekang was good. (2) Learning achievement using the 2013 curriculum and KTSP was good. (3) There is no difference between students’ English learning achievement using different curriculum. It could be concluded that the learning achievement was not only influenced by the curriculum, but also many other factors for example the teachers or the facilities. In other words, the 2013 curriculum did not give effect to students’ English learning achievement

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to describe the result of the vocabulary level analysis of the students‟ essay writing and academic textbook utilizing lextutor, to investigate the effects of introducing VP web tool (lextutor) on students‟ vocabulary level in writing academic essays at the English Education Department of UIN Alauddin Makassar academic year 2011/2012, to correlate the vocabulary level of their essay writing and their academic textbook, and to investigate their opinion on lextutor as a VP web tool analyzer towards their essay writing. The data were collected through the VP web tool and interview using four different academic essays of 100 students involved. The data analysis and interpretation indicated: (1) the vocabulary levels of the students‟ essay writings were smaller than the standard percentage of VP web tool exclude their K1; (2) the changes of vocabulary profile of the students‟ academic essays were not significantly affected by the introducing of VP web tool as the trendlines did not show the normal pattern of time-series graphic line design; (3) findings on vocabulary profile of the students‟ academic reading text showed similar patterns of graphic trendline to those in the academic essays; (4) the use of K2 and AWL in the students‟ academic essays were proved to be significantly different before and after the intervention but not significant in K1 and OL vocabulary profile; (5) there is not any significant correlation between the vocabulary profile of academic reading texts and vocabulary profile of students‟ essay writing in academic word list; and (6) the VP web tool is good and gives a lot of benefit to students to assess their vocabulary level when dealing with academic essay writing, and they have awareness of using more and appropriate academic vocabulary in writing academic tasks. The findings led to the recommendation of an extensive use of VP web tool to analyze vocabulary level used by students in their academic essays.

Abstract

This study was a CAR situated at the second semester students of Foreign Language Intensive Program (PIBA) of UIN Alauddin Makassar. The students experienced crusial problems in Interpersonal Conversation. They seemed likely afraid to talk as well as to speak something in front of the class. Moreover, they considered spoken English such a hell subject. Consequently, the study employed a kind of Cooperative Learning named Inside Outside Circle in the learning process to introduce better English conversation to students. Finally, it was found that there was a significant achievement as well as a marvelous performance gained by students from the first up to the second cycle. The mean score at pre cycle test was only 15, 45. Then, It raised up to 46, 80 at the first cycle as well as 70,20 at the second cycle. Furthermore, the highest score of pre-test was 37 and changed to 80,71 in the first cycle post test, then raised up to 89,12 in the second cycle. Otherwise, the lowest score is 1 becomes 18 in the first cycle and 60 in the second cycle. Thus,the Cooperative Learning model IOC could increase the students’ capability of conducting better English Interpersonal Conversation as well as encourage students’ class involvement.

Abstract

This research paper aims at finding whether the students ability in listening can be improved by activating students’ prior knowledge. The research conducted at English education study program of faculty of Tarbiyah and education of UIN Alauddin Makassar. This research applied cluster random sampling method. The research data were collected using listening test. It was given at pretest and posttest to know the students’ achievement on listening. The data got during research was analyzed by t test. The finding of the study indicated that the experimental group was higher than that of control group. The result of the hypothesis testing showed that the difference of average score was significant (0.000 < 0.05). This means that there was an improvement of students’ achievement after being exposed by activating their prior knowledge. It implies that activating students’ prior knowledge can improve students’ listening skill.

Abstract

This research was intended to investigate the problems in professional competence faced by the English teachers of vocational high schools in Gowa, South Sulawesi. This research applied descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected by using three instruments namely questionnaire, interview and observation checklist. The participants were two Experience English teachers, two advanced beginner English teachers, and eight students. The professional competence indicators adapted from the Regulation of the Minister of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia No. 16/2007. The research found that there were eleven problems faced by the teacher in relation to their professional competence. In English teachers’ competence especially in linguistic aspect, the major problem faced by the teachers is dealing with lacking of the vocabulary for special terms. In addition, the research also indicated that there were two other serious problems faced by the teachers. First, they faced problem in developing the teacher professionalism continuously. Second, they do not use information and communication for communicating maximally.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out: (1) the students’ attitude toward CSR in teaching-reading comprehension and (2) the role of CSR and its affects on students’ reading comprehension. This study was experimental which involved two groups: experimental and control groups. The research was conducted at Madrasah Aliyah Negeri MAN 1 Makassar, South Sulawesi with 40 students as respondents. The instruments of data collection were pre-test, treatment, post-test, and questionnaire. The reading test was administered to both groups. The scores were assessed by two assessors. The data were analyzed and interpreted by means of SPSS 14.0. The study reveals that the implementation of CSR has a significant effect on students’ reading proficiency in terms of content of the text: preview, clik and clunk, get the gist and wrap up. The results of students’ reading score from pre-test to post-test demonstrate a significant difference. It is found that sig. (2-tailed) is 0.000 lower than 0.05. The comparison of the students’ reading proficiency outcome between the two groups (8.592>2.024) shows that the improvement is significant. The finding signifies that CSR is positively responded by the experimental class. The implementation of CSR increases students’ reading proficiency.

Abstract

This research aimed to develop a Task-Based syllabus for midwifery students of Midwifery Study Program at UIN Alauddin Makassar. The research design used in this study was Research and Development (R & D). Types of data obtained in this study were qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative data gained from interviewing students, graduate, and from the experts validation; meanwhile the quantitative data gained from the questionnaire which was distributed to the students. The instruments used in this study were questionnaire, interview guideline and rubric. The result of this research showed that 1) language needs of the students cover language skills and learning preferences. In language skills, speaking, listening, writing, reading are used often. In learning preferences, learning preferences in terms of learning English with others, others are study in small group, and study in big group, self study, study in pairs, while learning preferences in terms of learning by using teaching technique, study trough listening and speaking is mostly preferred by the students. 2) Language function used of graduate in the workplace is pregnancy, during pregnancy, good food for pregnant woman, diet in pregnancy, how to cut the umbilical cord, medical equipment. 3) The design syllabus based on the students’ need. In this case, the researcher recommended a Task-Based Syllabus based on the students’ need. The components of syllabus were validated. After validation, the experts pointed out that some components of the syllabus were developed well, whereas some components should be revised: materials, learning activities/task, and time allotment. Some of the materials were changed with the appropriate materials whih was correlated with the topic, individual practice was needed to be added to the learning activities, time allotments should be distributed proportionally, and then the sources should be added.

Abstract

This research aims at finding out the types of grammatical errors and the causes of errors in Thai students‟ English writing and speaking. The research employed descriptive qualitative method. The sample consisted of 9 Thai students. The data were collected by using observing, recording and interviewing the students which was analysed through open coding, axial coding and selective coding. The research result indicated that there are some types and causes of errors found in Thai students‟ English writing and speaking. There are about 85 errors in writing. Some types of error also appeared in students‟ speaking. There are about 39 errors in speaking.There are several causes of error found in Thai students‟ English writing and speaking. Interference of native language is the most influencing factors in Thai students‟ writing and speaking, the second is overgeneralization, the third is performance errors, and the last is students‟ educational and economic background.KEY WORDS

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to know how the implementation of the 2013 curriculum in learning activity conducted by the English teacher, and to find out the teacher’s difficulties in implementing it. In collecting data about the implementation of the 2013 curriculum in learning activity conducted by the English teacher, the researcher conducted observation. The data about the teacher’s difficulties was achieved by conducting interview. The subject of this research was English teachers of first grade at Junior High School 17 Makassar. The data achieved by observing about the implementation of the 2013 curriculum in learning activity conducted by the English teachers showed that there were a lot of activities conducted by the English teachers in learning activity. They were observing questioning, experimenting, associating, and communicating. Those activities were conducted step by step. The data achieved by interviewing about the teachers’ difficulties in implementing the 2013 curriculum showed that there were a lot of teachers’ difficulties. The difficulties faced by the teacher A and the teacher B were affective appraisal, the lack of time in explaining materials, the lack of learning facilities, and the students handbook. Based on the data above, the researcher concluded that the implementation of the 2013 curriculum conducted by the English teachers of first grade at Junior High School 17 Makassar was in accordance with the government policy. Giving affective appraisal and the student handbook were the teachers’ difficulties generally.
