Abstract

This study aims to utilize the impact of internet technology and learning sources by investigating students' need concerning web-based vocabulary material. Need analysis is the starting point in material dvelopment. The research design used by the researcher is survey research. The research subject is the first-year students of English education department at UIN Alauddin Makassar consisting of 100 participants. The instruments of the research are questionnaire, interview.The students' need analysis of web-based preposition learning material consisted of four aspects. The first is an introduction. The second is linguistics' need. Then, the third is learning's need. The last is the display setting. The result of data shows that the students need to improve their vocabulary as requirements to finish the study. There is no exercises or training to practice the vocabularies. So that it needs to design and develop vocabulary materials that fulfil the students’ need. The students need to put all aspect of vocabulary in material: definition, function, form, and type. In material design, it needs to stress on proper place of the vocabularies, because students are difficult to put a proper place of vocabularies. It should also put pictures and animation, exercises, and vocabulary list. The also should be colorful. It should put some material by using visual, audio, and kinesthetic.

Abstract

Technology is increasingly becoming a trend with a million benefits offered to its users. In a pandemic situation nowadays, the role of technology in the education sector is very important. Thus, this study aims to investigates the students’ need regarding Web-based Basic English Grammar materials. The starting point in developing Web-based Basic English grammar materials is identifying student needs related to Web-based Basic English Grammar Materials. This Research utilized survey research. The subject of this research is the first-year students of English Education Department class A, B and C, which is consist of 100 people. The instrument of the research was questionnaire and interview. The result of the research shows that Web-based Basic English grammar materials is very essential to develop to fulfill students’ need. Students need to learn not only in the classroom but also out of the class.  In terms of display of the website, students perceive that the website should consists of definition, kinds, examples, and learning videos of basic English grammar materials. Additionally, individual and group assignments are needed to measure students' comprehention of the material.

Abstract

The main objective of this research was to find out the influence of taking a part time job towards students’ learning motivation at the seventh semester students of English Education Department. The researcher applied quantitative and qualitative descriptive method. The population of this research was the seventh semester students of English Education Department and the sample were students who took part time jobs in each class of the seventh semester students’ academic year 2012 which consisted of 20 students. The data were collected through questionnaire and interview. The result of the data was indicated that there were positive influences of taking a part time job towards students’ learning motivation. It was proven by the mean score of total number of all questions as 43.9 which was classified as very high. The result of interview was some students liked their part time jobs because they could be more experienced in teaching, could obtained money for their daily needs, and they said that there was influence of taking a part time job towards their learning motivation improvement. It was proven by the lists of students’ GPA which the most were increase. The positive influences also from the hours of students’ work which were not more than 20 hours per week where it was appropriate with the rule in Australia. Based on the result, the researcher concluded that taking a part time job has some influences especially in improving students’ learning motivation.

Abstract

This research paper aims at finding whether the students ability in listening can be improved by activating students’ prior knowledge. The research conducted at English education study program of faculty of Tarbiyah and education of UIN Alauddin Makassar. This research applied cluster random sampling method. The research data were collected using listening test. It was given at pretest and posttest to know the students’ achievement on listening. The data got during research was analyzed by t test. The finding of the study indicated that the experimental group was higher than that of control group. The result of the hypothesis testing showed that the difference of average score was significant (0.000 < 0.05). This means that there was an improvement of students’ achievement after being exposed by activating their prior knowledge. It implies that activating students’ prior knowledge can improve students’ listening skill.

Abstract

This paper explains about the types of teachers’ talk in classroom interaction. This research was case study. In this research, the writer applied Descriptive Research Design which applied observation method. It aimed to gain the data that were observed during Teaching and learning process. The data were presented by analyzing the teacher talk and the speech act used by the informant. The source of data was the lecturer of ICP FMIPA UNM Makassar. The instrument of this study was observation where the writer used video cam to record and shoot the speech of the lecturer and also transcribing it. This research instrument was applied to acquire the data about teacher talk and speech act used by the lecturer at ICP FMIPA UNM Makassar. The result of the research shows that there are some types of teachers’ talk performed by the lecturer during classroom interaction, they are greeting student, reviewing the previous material, introducing the new material, giving direction and instruction, encouraging and motivating, giving advice and closing the class.

Abstract

The main objective of this study is to find out the effectiveness of students ability in Reading comprehension that taught by using Make a Match method. This research was conducted at MTs Guppi Samata Gowa Regency in Academic Year 2016/2017. In this research, the population were students in the first grade. The numbers of population were 50 students. In taking the sample, Class VII A and VII B was chosen by using purposive sampling technique.. Quasi-experimental design was applied in this research with two group pre-test and post-test design. Class VII A was chosen as controlled class by using conventional method (speech method) and Class VII B was chosen as experimental class that taught by using Make a Match method. The instrument used to collect data was reading test, especially multiple choice as a representation of reading and some vocabularies to make a matching in the translation of the words. The result of the data analysis indicated that there was a significant improvement in the students’ reading comprehension after being taught using Make a Match method. It was proved by the result of the statistical analysis of the level significance P = 0.05 with degree of freedom (df) = 48 indicated that the t-test values of the students’ reading (5.511) was higher than t-table value (2.021). Based on the result analysis, the researcher concludes that of using Make a Match method was effective to improve reading comprehension at the first grade students’ of MTs Guppi Samata Gowa, because make a match have some advantages such as each students can be directly involved in answering a question given to them in the from a card, secondly, it can increase the students’ activity. Thirdly, it can help avoid students being bored during teaching learning process and make a match method can motivate and encourage students to be more interested and enthusiastic in learning English.

Abstract

The research was purposed to identify the causal factors of the English Students’ Accent interference on the pronunciation in English conversation. To meet the objective, the researcher adopted case study design by Cresswell. The data were gathered through qualitative method based on Miles and Huberman’s technique of data analysis. The research was undertaken in STAIN Watampone, Kabupaten Bone, from March 2017 to May 2017. The finding of the research showed that the the different phoneme areas of Bugis-Speaker with English Speakers and Bugis-Bone is strong/heavy accent are the causal factors that become the interference when the students speak English in English conversation. Referring on the description above, it informed that the students must be aware of their first language interference to their English pronunciation in English conversation.

Abstract

Abstract: This paper discusses about difficulties encountered by Bugis learner in producing English phonemes. The learners who learn second language use their mother tongue to analyze the second language. They analyze the second language to find the differences and similarities both languages. The similarities can create ease to transfer the language, on the contrary the differences can creates difficulties. Based on the description above it informs that Bugis learners have difficulties in producing the following phonemes: The Labial consonant /f/ and /v/, The interdental consonant /θ/ and /d/, The alveolar consonant /z/, The consonant palatals /ŝ/ and /ž/, The vowel /æ/, The diphtong / iə, uə, əu, eə/, English also permits much longer sequences of consonant initially, medially, and finally in utterances. Both English and Buginese have consonant which are conveniently symbolized /t,d,s,z/. In English, however, these represent alveolar, whereas in Buginese they represent dentals. All of these differences constitute a major source of difficulty for the Bugis speakersin leaning English.Abstrak: Tulisan ini membahas tentang kesulitan yang dihadapi oleh pebelajar yang bahasa ibunya adalah bahasa Bugis dalam mengucapkan fonem. Pebelajar yang belajar bahasa kedua menggunakan bahasa ibu mereka untuk menganalisa bahasa kedua. Mereka menganalisa bahasa kedua untuk menemukan perbedaan dan persamaan diantara kedua bahasa. Persamaan akan memudahkan untuk mentansfer bahasa kedua, dan sebaliknya perbedaan dapat menyulitkan. Pebelajar yang bahasa ibunya adalah bahasa Bugis mempunyai kesulitan dalam menybutkan fnem-fonem berikut: konsonan bilabial/f/ dan /v/. konsonanm interdental /θ/ and /d/, konsonan alveolar/ z// the konsonan palatal /ŝ/ and /ž/, vokal /æ/, diftong / iə, uə, əu, eə/. Bahasa Inggris dan bahasa Bugis mempunyai konsonan /t,d,s,z/. Namun demikian dalam bahasa Inggris dikategorikan sebagai alveolar sementara dalam bahasa Bugis dikategorikan sebagai dental. Perbedaan-perbedaan tersebut menyebabkan kesulitan bagi pebelajar bahasa inggris untuk menghasilkan bunyi-bunyi dalam bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

ESP course design has grown to become one of the most prominent areas of EFL teaching since the early 1960's. It is a phenomenon that grew out of a number of covering trends. Nowadays there are many courses are offered in ESP areas. There has been several approaches in designing course but each of them has weakness and strengthens. This article aims at finding new approaches in ESP course design that integrate all the needs that the course. It integrates three com-ponent of need analysis, PSA, TSA, and LSA, and integrated source of data-stake-holder, learner, teacher, and expert. Each of the steps of integrated approach in-tegrate all component needed.

Abstract

Abstrak. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui pandangan guru Fisika tentang faktor penghambat pelaksanaan pembelajaran menggunakan pendekatan saintifik berbasis Kurikulum 2013. Jenis penelitian kualitatif ini memiliki dua subjek penelitian yakni guru Fisika di SMA Negeri 6 Sinjai. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan wawancara secara mendalam, observasi terbuka, dokumentasi, dan catatan lapangan. Data yang terkumpul dideskripsikan secara naratif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa hambatan yang dialami guru Fisika dalam proses pembelajaran menggunakan pendekatan saintifik yakni guru belum sepenuhnya paham dengan Pendekatan Saintifik, format RPP dan format penilaian yang selalu berubah, alokasi waktu yang tidak cocok untuk menerapkan Pendekatan Saintifik, sarana dan prasarana sekolah yang kurang memadai, dan kemampuan peserta didik yang berbeda-beda dalam memahami pelajaran.Kata kunci: pendekatan saintifik, kurikulum 2013 Abstract. The purpose of this research is to know the Physics teacher's views on inhibiting factors in the learning process using a scientific approach based on the 2013 Curriculum. This qualitative research had two research subjects coming from Physics teachers of SMA 6 Sinjai. The data collected thorough deep interviews, open observations, and field notes. Then the data described such as narrative description. The results of the study show that there are obstacles faced by Physics teachers in the learning process using scientific approach namely physic teachers who are not fully recognized scientific approach, formatting of lesson plans and evaluation tend to change frequently, insufficient time inappropriate time to support this approach, inadequate school infrastructure, and the student's different abilities to understand the lesson.Keywords: scientific approach, 2013 curriculum
