Abstract

This study presents exact solution analysis for the cost optimization of Composite Beams (CB) based on the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) specifications. Matlab code formulation is applied to analysis of sensitivity for various parameters such as cost of concrete, steel beam, span length, concrete slab thickness, compressive strength of concrete, steel beams space and shear connectors on CB. Almost 20 thousands design were analysed to obtain various contour which be found that it is feasible, efficient and effective and capable in optimization of composite beam designs.The obtained results represent that many of the contour are capable by achieving substantial cost savings for composite materials. Therefore, the analysis can be developed for practical designs to structural designers. A parametric study was also conducted to investigate the effects of IPE, IPB, INP profiles, UNP size and thickness of slabs and beam length on the cost optimization of CB.

Abstract

Using the fibre additives with a uniform distribution in asphaltic concrete mixture is a well-known technique for improving the mechanical properties and durability of asphalt pavement. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of preparing fibre and production of the properties of bitumen and asphalt concrete mixture. In this study, a dense-graded aggregation, mineral fibres (asbestos) and synthetic fibres (polyester and nylon) were used.  Laboratory studies were done by comparing different rheological properties, mechanical and moisture susceptibility of mixtures of fibres. Results of the penetration and softening point on mixtures of bitumen – fibre show that fibres improve the mixed rheological properties and stiffening effect of fibre properties. The results of Marshall Tests indicate that adding fibres reduces the strength in Marshall and results in the slight increase in the percentage of optimum bitumen content and asphalt percentage of air voids in comparison with typical fibre. The results of the indirect tensile tests showed that the addition of fibres, depending on the percentage of fibres significantly improves the durability of the mixture.

Abstract

Concrete pavements have been widely used for constructing runways, taxiways, and apron areas at airports. The aviation industry has responded to increased demand for air travel by developing longer, wider, and heavier aircraft with increasing numbers of wheels to support the aircraft while in ground operation. Many researchers developed their models based on the finite element method (FEM) for the analysis of jointed concrete pavement. Despite the notable improvement, important considerations were overlooked. These simplifications may affect the results of the developed models and make them unrealistic. Sensitivity studies were conducted in this study to investigate the effect of the loading parameters on the load transfer efficiency (LTE) indictors where concept of LTE is fundamental in airfield design procedures.  The effect of main gear loading magnitudes in different wheel configurations combined with positive and negative thermal gradients was investigated. The verification process was presented to increases the confidence in the model results. Understanding the response of rigid airfield pavement under such circumstances is important developing a new pavement design procedure, as well as implementing a suitable remedial measure for existing pavements. The results obtained that utilizing a dynamic load allows studying the fatigue cycles that pavement can be subjected under different wheel configurations.   Moreover, the change in the thermal gradient from positive to negative significantly changed the slab curvature shape.
