Abstract

This research aims to shed light on the effect of steel fiber shape, length, diameter, and aspect ratio on the mechanical properties of slurry infiltration fiber reinforced concrete (SIFCON). This study comprised of casting and testing three groups of SIFCON specimens with 6% fiber volume fraction. The first group was reinforced with micro steel fiber, other reinforced by hook end steel fibers, while the last group of specimens reinforced by mixing two shape of steel fiber as hybrid fiber (3% micro steel fiber +3% hook end steel fiber). Silica fume was used as a partial replacement (10%) by weight of cement. 3.7% super plasticizer was used to make the slurry liquid enough to penetrate through the fiber network, while the w/c ratio kept constant at 0.33. It was found from the results achieved that the compressive strength, static modulus of elasticity, splitting tensile strength and toughness are extremely affected by the geometry of fibers because the network of fibers formed and their density depends on the size and shape of fibers. Where the values of micro steel fibers are far outweighing the values of hooked end fibers. It was also deduced from empiricism results that combining long and short fibers gives excellent results.

Abstract

The overloads of structures or embankments built on clayey soft ground are generally applied gradually, respecting a specific phasing. This phasing on construction allows the undrained shear strength of clay increasing over consolidation in order to avoid the risk of collapse during loading. In this work, the undrained shear strength of clay over the consolidation was estimated following SHANSEP method of which parameters proposed by eight researchers have been employed, as well as the slope stability analysis of embankments on soft soils during staged construction. Assessment of factor of safety for slope stability was conducted basing on the Bishop method. Additionally, the variations of undrained shear strength and factor of safety were presented. In order to validate the methods discussed in this study, slope stability analysis of five embankments constructed on clayey soft soils improved by the vertical drain technique in a high-speed railway construction project in Morocco was performed. For these embankments, field measurements about lateral displacement are presented.  It was found that some of the adopted methods is in a good agreement with field measurements. Hence, generalization of these methods to many soft ground cases can be proposed.

Abstract

This study devotes to investigate the use of Raw Sewage Sludge (RSS) and Rice Husk Ash (RHA) to obtain sustainable construction materials. This study focuses on the evaluation of using cement-based materials having RSS and RHA. The methodology of this study could be summarized by replacing water by RSS and replacement of 10 %RHA from the weight of cement. Five groups have been used with different ratios of RSS/binder; for each group with and without RHA. In addition, the sand/binder ratio has been changed for Group 2. This method includes testing the flowability, compressive strength, Total Water Absorption (TWA) and density for the mortar mixes containing these materials. The results indicate that mixes with added materials encourage the results compared to control mixes. Addition of RHA considerably decreases flowability; however it enhanced compressive strength for all groups especially for Groups 3, 4 and 5.  Moreover, the minimum values of TWA were recorded when 10% RHA was utilized as a cement replacement for both RSS and water mixes. Finally, it was found that replacing RSS by water, leads to the reduction in flowability and TWA in all mixes especially at 10% RHA; whereas the strength and density increase.

Abstract

In order to enrich the car-following theory of urban signalized intersections, and reveal the car-following characteristics of left turn at signalized intersections, the car-following behavior of left turn at signalized intersections is studied. The car-following data acquisition test which was based on high precision GPS was designed. And the car-following characteristics of left-turning vehicles at signalized intersections with different turning radii were analyzed. Based on which, the influence of radius on the car-following behavior was explained, and the New Full Velocity Difference (NFVD) model was developed. The genetic algorithm was used to calibrate the parameters of the NFVD model. The stability and accuracy of the calibrated model was further analyzed by using field data. The results showed that the average speed of the following car increases with the turning radius of the signalized intersection; the car-following speed which the highest frequency occurs under different turning radii tends to increase with the enlargement of turning radius; the larger the average headway distance between the car-following vehicles, the more intense of the driver’s response to the deceleration of the front vehicle. These findings could be used in traffic simulation and to make engineering decisions.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to investigate the advantage of using large-diameter 0.7-inch (18 mm) strands in pretention applications. Large-diameter strands are advantageous in bridge construction due to the increased girders capacity required to sustain exponential increase in vehicle numbers, sizes, and weights. In this research, flexure capacity of girders fabricated using 0.7-inch (18 mm) diameter strands will be calculated and compared to bridge capacities constructed using smaller strands. Finally, two similar bridge sections will be designed using 0.6-inch (15 mm) and 0.7-inch (18 mm) diameter strands to quantify the structural advantages of increased strand diameter. The research findings showed that a smaller number of girders is required for bridge construction when larger strands are used. Four girders are required to design the bridge panel using high performance concrete and large diameter strands, as compared to 6 girders required when regular concrete mix designs and normal size strands are used. The advantages of large strands and high-performance concrete mixes include expedited construction, reduced project dead loads, and reduced demand for labor and equipment. Thus, large strands can partially contribute to the improvement of bridge conditions, minimize construction cost, and increase construction site safety.

Abstract

This paper examines the huge destruction that has taken place in some cities of Iraq due to the terrorist acts in recent years that led to the destruction of many buildings. It examines some of the factors that encourage the use of residues of these buildings in reconstruction processes, especially the sustainability factor, so that some residues of these buildings can be used as substitutes for natural building materials and find a difference in terms of energy consumption in the case of using natural building materials and again in the case of using the proposed alternatives. In this study, three alternatives were used: 10% recycled fine aggregates (RFA), 100% RFA, and crushed clay brick aggregate (CCBA) to produce recycled coarse aggregates. The results obtained through the use of building information modeling (BIM) technology were compared with the actual consumption of the building in the case of reconstruction using natural building materials. The simulation results were comparable to real data. They were analyzed in terms of the energy consumption life cycle and annual carbon emissions for each alternative. The best alternative was selected from the results obtained from BIM. The best alternative was found in the use of CCBA in the production of concrete roofs and floors. His final model is that the energy consumption was five times lower than the original unit, while the results of carbon emissions were equal as for the electricity consumption decreased from 23,500 kW/h to less than 23,000 kW/h.

Abstract

Cua Dai estuary belonged to Quang Nam province is considered to be one of the localities of Vietnam having a complex erosion and accretion process. In this area, sandbars are recently observed with lots of arguments about the causes and regimes of formation. This could very likely result of not reliable source of information on shoreline evolution and a lack of historical monitoring data. Accurately identification of shoreline positions over a given period of time is a key to quantitatively and accurately assessing the beach erosion and accretion. The study is therefore to propose an innovative method of accurately shoreline positions for an analysis of coastal erosion and accretion in the Cua Dai estuary. The proposed technology of multitemporal remote sensing and digital evaluation model with tidal correction are used to analyse the changes in shoreline and estimate the rate of erosion and accretion. An empirical formula is, especially, exposed to fully interpret the shoreline evolution for multiple scales based on a limitation of satellite images during 1965 to 2018. The results show that there is a significant difference of shoreline shift between corrections and non-corrections of tidal. Erosion process tends to be recorded in the Cua Dai cape located in the Cua Dai ward, especially in the An Luong cape located in the Duy Hai commune with the length of 1050 m. Furthermore, it is observed that there is much stronger erosion in the north side compared with south side of Cua Dai estuary.

Abstract

The freeze-thaw cycle of saline soil in the seasonal frozen area will produce diseases such as frost heave and thaw settlement, road frost boiling, collapse and uneven settlement. In order to reduce the occurrence of these undesirable phenomena, it is often necessary to improve the saline soil in engineering. In this paper, the typical carbonate saline soil in the west of Jilin Province, China is taken as the research object. By adding different content of lime (0%, 3%, 6%, 9%, 12%, 15%), the change of mechanical strength of lime solidified saline soil under different freeze-thaw cycles (0, 1, 3, 6, 10, 30, 60 times) is studied. The mechanical analysis is carried out by combining particle size analysis test and SEM image. The test results show that although repeated freeze-thaw cycles make the soil structure loose and the mechanical strength greatly reduced, the soil particles agglomerate obviously after adding lime, its dispersion is restrained by the flocculation of clay colloid, and the shear strength of soil is improved by the increase of the cohesive force between clay particles, and the optimal lime mixing ratio of the saline soil in this area is 9%.

Abstract

The replacement of conventional steel bars with GFRP or CFRP is one of the main topics discussed in this paper, including the main parameters and properties of the materials. The design procedures should account for the properties and will focus on the tensile strength and modulus of elasticity. It will also consider corrosion under environmentally aggressive conditions. This paper presents an experiment on the flexural behavior of concrete beams reinforced with GFRP and CFRP bars and compares these results with theoretical analysis based on different standards such as ACI, Eurocode, and CSA. Twelve reinforced concrete beams will be tested using four-point loading. The geometrical parameters of the tested beams are 130×220×2200 mm, reinforced with different diameters for GFRP and CFRP.  The reinforcement ratio and strength of concrete influence the behavior of GFRP, CFRP, and RC beams and contribute to reduce the deflection and crack width. Based on this research, the closest approximation of the experimental results is observed with ACI standards. At this stage, these bars can be used in structures without strict requirements for exceeding the Serviceability Limit State. The non-integration of tension stiffening and regression performance of cracking moment in prediction expressions imposed the differences from experimental results.

Abstract

This article focuses on comparison between Manual/Traditional and Building Information Modelling (BIM) software based approaches for cost comparison. Centre line method for manual and Revit software for BIM based approaches are used in this research. The principal objectives of this research are to calculate quantities by Manual Centre line method, then to make the cost estimation fast, accurate, efficient, and errorless by using BIM software Rivet, and finally the comparison study of manual based and BIM / Software based estimation. For manual approach, quantities are calculated by multiplying the measurements of length, breadth, and height. Then to get the total quantities the deduction is subtracted from the quantities and final BOQ is prepared for which estimated cost of building is calculated. For BIM based approach, 3D model from 2D floor plan of building is prepared in Revit software, then to estimate the cost of building structure elements, sheets of quantities are generated in the schedule option of the view tab in the software. The Percentage difference between Manual and BIM / Revit Software estimation in brick work, RCC Slab, Plaster Work, PCC for Flooring, Floor Tile Work, Skirting, Paint Work, False Ceiling, Doors and Aluminum Work is 4.57, 2.61, 7.58, 3.27, 1.87, 6.73, 8.03, 1.87, and 0.00% respectively. The total cost difference between manual and BIM based estimation approach comes out to be 4.8%. It is thus concluded that the BIM-assisted estimates have better performance over traditional/manual estimating methods.
