Abstract

Listening occupies a central place in communication in everyday situations as well as business settings. We spend more time listening than we spend speaking, reading and writing. Most of our knowledge of the world derives from listening input. In spite of the centrality of listening, it has received an unfair treatment in second and foreign language classrooms. On the other hand, reading and writing have received a favorable treatment. The present paper discusses why it is imperative to develop listening skills in our learners. Elaborating on the ingredients of effective listening and causes and consequences of poor listening, the paper suggests some remedial measures and exercises to improve the listening skills of learners of English as a second and foreign language.

Abstract

The move in recent times from a native speaker norm as the ultimate goal of language learning to a bilingual speaker norm requires a new understanding of the role of the language teacher. Rather than transmitter of knowledge or facilitator of learning, the language teacher is a mediator of language and culture, standing between students' language(s) and culture(s) and the target language and culture. This role presents a number of challenges for language teachers as they consider the implications for their practice and for their own linguistic and cultural identities. Using examples from teachers of Indonesian as a second language in Australian schools, this paper examines how teachers of languages must navigate the local and the additional language and culture with their students in practice. Abstract

Second language acquisition has become a big issue in recent years and it leads to the study of transfer. As there are many problems faced by the lecturers deal with the students’ pronunciation, then this paper is aimed at revealing and describing the errors in pronouncing English sounds made by the English learners because of the negative transfer from their first language (L1). Mix method was used in this study, it began with the qualitative one and then to know the percentage of each data, quantitative one was applied. The data were got from the recording of speaking activities and interview and then it was transcribed into broad transcription. This study does not include the narrow transcription, therefore no suprasegmental features found in this paper. The results of this study revealed that most of the students made some errors in pronouncing English sounds which they cannot found in their first language such as the sound /æ/, /∫/, /θ/, /ð/, and /ʒ /. The result is hoped to be able to give some input to the English teacher and lecturer on the common errors made by the students in pronouncing English sounds and lead them to improve their teaching methods in order to help their students in pronouncing new sounds found in the target language. Abstract

In 1970s, Language Awareness (LA) was put forward, primarily by modern linguists, as a new ‘bridging’ element in the UK school curriculum. It was viewed as a solution to several of the failures in the UK schools: illiteracy in English, failure to learn foreign languages, and divisive prejudices. To Van Lier (2001) current interest in LA stems from three sources: Pedagogically oriented LA, Consciousness raising, and critical perspective. This paper concentrates on psycholinguistic focus on consciousness-raising (hereafter C-R activities) and explicit attention to language form or grammar. Three relevant issues are discussed here. Firstly, the nature of LA, its principles, objectives and procedures are discussed. Secondly, this study delves into the main justifications and implications of LA. Last but not the least, this paper tries to present an overview of the rationale behind the use of C-R activities in teaching grammar and current perspectives in grammar teaching. Abstract

This paper discusses the meaning of the complex clause by a series of processes that are combined in a logical of the two clauses. Complex clause can be combined through one of two logical-semantic relationships that is expansion or projection. Systemic Functional Linguistics approach is used to describe the five texts taken at random. The five texts are: (1) Gembala dan malaikat, (2) Pendahuluan, (3) Melakukan Studi Gender dalam Bahasa, (4) Korporasi, Kerja dan Kultur, dan (5) Gara-gara Dilarang Bertemu (1) Shepherd and angels, (2) Introduction, (3) Doing Gender in Language Studies, (4) Corporations, Employment and Culture, and (5) Due to Divorce, No Meet Pets. The analysis of the five texts is not opposed but complementary to one another. By using a qualitative descriptive method, it was found two types of logical-semantic relations: (1) Expansion, and (2) projection. Integrating through one of the logical-semantic relations: expansion or projection is realized through a system of mutual dependence or taxis that can be divided into paratactic and hypotactic. Abstract

Advertisements are valuable tools for ESL/EFL classrooms. Many instructors, however, tend to focus on enhancing language learning per se. With an experimental way, they are tools for discussions and analyses of contemporary cultural issues. To utilize the mass media in the classrooms, CLL and project work are suggested to be effective tools for this. The main purpose of the study was therefore to explore whether CLL and project work were effective for enhancing the discussions and analyses of cultural issues in Thai advertisements. The results of the study revealed that, cognitively and culturally, some advertisements provided a stimulating approach to discussions and analyses of the cultural issues since their contents contained highly cultural insights of the issues which provided topics for discussions and analyses. Communicatively, the discussions enhanced more active roles among the group communication, group interaction and dynamics, and communication skills. Linguistically, the discussions improved their speaking and writing skills. Pedagogically, the increased skills enhanced their L2 learning. This study, however, limits to a Thai EFL classroom and monocultural society. The replication with other EFL classrooms and in plural and intercultural societies is needed.
