Abstract

The notion to nurture local culture through English Language Teaching sparks an idea to incorporate an Indonesian traditional game, congklak, into a grammar class. Oftentimes, practicing grammar in a mechanical and monotonous way makes students struggle more than they already have with attempting to grasp grammar concepts. Consequently, only those with strong internal motivation, which are often small in number, are eager to engage in the practice. This study was intended to investigate the effectiveness of congklak game in helping adult learners acquire the English second conditional. One intact class of learners in an EFL university setting (final pool: n = 20) was randomly assigned to two groups (congklak game and non-congklak game). A pretest and an immediate posttest were administered to measure the participant’s mastery of the target grammatical forms. Results from the posttest revealed that the congklak game group significantly outperformed the non-congklak game group. The findings lend support to the possibility of adapting and modifying Indonesian traditional games as effective pedagogical means to facilitate EFL learners in acquiring grammatical forms in a much more interesting way.

Abstract

Students might have different attitudes and perceptions of different types of teachers. The present study aims to analyse the differences in students’ attitudes as well as perceptions toward two different types of teachers; NEST (Native English Speaking Teachers) and NNEST (Non-Native English Speaking Teachers). The present study used a mixed method approach by distributing a set of questionnaires to sixty junior high school students and interviewing four of them. Despite showing relatively positive attitudes toward both teachers, the findings revealed that the participants paid more attention to NEST than NNEST. Although most participants do not think English should only be taught by NEST, there is a preference over NEST whom are considered as more effective in teaching speaking skills, pronunciation, and cultural knowledge. However, the participants show more relaxed attitudes when they were being taught by NNEST due to shared L1 as well as teachers’ knowledge in learning English as non-native speakers. In addition, NNEST were perceived as better teachers of grammar than NEST. Thus, both teachers should learn from each other to create a better learning environment for students. Besides that, teacher trainings should equip pre-service teachers with knowledge to overcome their weaknesses either as NEST or NNEST.

Abstract

The main concern in education for the past decade has been on establishing autonomous learners. Giving more responsibility to learners in conducting the course of their learning is possible by applying appropriate approach and structured monitoring. In process-based learning, learners are motivated to experience a full cycle of writing process from planning to revision. What is more important is that learners are also encouraged to measure their development by keeping track of those processes in the form of reflection journal. While, the process-based learning enables learners to sharpen their cognitive awareness by exercising selfevaluation, peer-evaluation, and feedback-evaluation, the reflection journal enables them to evaluate and reflect their overall experience, including the difficulties they encounter during the processes. For this purpose, the reflection journal is designed as a tool which makes learners understand their initial and final strengths and weaknesses, their internal and external challenges and supports, and their past and future commitments autonomously with limited involvement from the teacher. In Stylistic Writing class, processbased learning and reflection journal are essential to establish learners’ autonomy in a way that they raise learners’ awareness of their own ability and needs as well as being sensitive to the issues in their environment. The combination of both helps learners identify pressing problems in their close environment and present solutions to those problems which leads to the creation of autonomous learners. Abstract

Speaking ability is very important to have good communication, especially in international communication. The English learners should have this ability and they must focus the learning on speaking skill. The learners’ failures in learning speaking were caused by the inappropriateness of the strategy or method learning. It happened to them unconciously. It means they are not aware of making inappropriateness in the method. The appropriate method should be applied in learning so that the success can be achieved. To realise the success in improving speaking ability can be done by using community-based learning method. The learning communities should be made to conduct the community-based learning. In these learning communities, the process of learning speaking can be appliead like it is in real communities. Real-like communities makes the learning process run well, because the condition is like the reality. The good process in learning makes the learners feel in the real society and feel enjoyable and confortable. If the learners have good feeling, they will learn speaking eagerly and spiritfully, so they will be succesfull in learning, especially speaking. Key words: Speaking, community-based, and learning

Abstract

The complain of the lecturers on English students’ grammar reflected in their understanding of reading text and their writing product stimulated grammar lecturers to find out the ways to make students use the grammar learned. The paper aims at exploring the learning tasks of text analysis and text created assigned to students of undergraduate level. This activity is the stepping stone to get the rank scale of the clause structure in inductive way. The topics discussed can be in the level of phrase, clause, or clause complex. After comprehending the level of scale structure, the students are directed to identify the rules they have learned by analyzing the text. To use what they have learned, students are assigned to create the text related to the topics. There are various activities that can be done, such as individual, pair-up, or group activities. Practices may be in spoken and written activities. As it was implemented in my grammar class, the result indicates that students were motivated and reflective in using the language. In the low level of structure, such as phrases and simple clause, it worked quite well. It didn’t take much time for the students to analyze the text for the rules and created the text assigned. In clause complex structure, however, it took a little longer for them to do the analysis. But the result is good. It is also a challenge for students to create independent activities outside the class, especially for the bright students.

Abstract

The media industry opens shared access to man and woman in pursuing their career. The contestation of woman in media is perceived to be the liberation against the patriarchal ideology. The perception cannot be separated from the discourses  of the pubic. Man, since thousand years ago, has been viewed to be more logic and superior than his counterpart. Woman is believe to have no ability to use his logics more than her heart and emotion. This paper tries to focus on the images of woman represented by the advertisement. Employing the foucault’s  discourse theory and Roland Barthes’s  semiotic of myth, it is aimed to disclose how woman represented and the ideology works underlying the representation.     The analysis shows that the ads in the mass media cannot be blamed to be the means to maintain the patriarchal hegemony only. The ads, in fact, are the representation arena pursued by the competing forces of discourse in the society. They, besides functioned to market the product, may provide and offer some ideological content. It means the ads cannot be whole-generalized to be the patriarchal media : they than have a potential  subversive shocking the hegemonic ideology. The feminist discourse evoke in the ads offers the strategic role of woman in the contestation. In sum, the bodies of woman in the ads are the fragmented ideological bodies slice by the negotiation of varying discourses of ideology developing in the society.
