Abstract

Effective teaching conducted by teachers becomes one of the affecting factors toward students’ learning achievement. Effective teaching and learning here is teaching learning process that is locally and education-ally relevant and meaningful to the students. However, it is not easy for teachers to full fill this and that is why they need to do self-evaluation for keeping them moving with the process of adopting, adapting, and mediating the current views in teaching, current needs of the students and the current condition of the school. This paper proposes a practical model for providing clinical supervision to help teachers build their instructional ability by fostering teachers to do self-evaluation of their teaching. This paper also describes the challenges, problems, and practical solutions and strategies for helping teachers build their pedagogic compe-tence in terms of providing English instruction. Abstract

Due to the influence of global and regional economic changes, English for Specific Purposes (ESP) plays a more vital role in English language studies worldwide, including in Asian context. A look at any issues relat-ing to Asian ESP will shed light to the needs of English in this content. This present study therefore sur-veyed recent trends of ESP research in this context, with the purpose of the study which aimed to explore recent trends in Asian ESP research from 2005 to 2013. The Asian ESP Journal which has been a flagship in this area was chosen for the content analysis in this study. The results revealed that the research trends in ESP were primarily based on qualitative research method. Future research study may explore international ESP to compare the results of the study with this one. Keywords: ESP, trends in research, Asian context

Abstract

The push toward language teaching to make learners effective communicators has been relentless. To be proficient language users, learners need to at least practice it inside the classroom to communicate functionally and interactively. Through such a way, they will be accustomed to the language not only from linguistic and structural matters, but also from authentic communicative competence. Willingness to Communicate (WTC), hence, is a crucial plus point for learners to succeed their L2 acquisition. This present study which was held in EFL context aimed to: (1) examine the Indonesian students’ level of WTC in English, and (2) reveal the potential factors which influence students’ WTC in English. A total 136 undergraduate students from three different majors (Medicine, Accounting, Elementary School Teacher Education) participated in this study. The data were gathered through a survey and a semi-structured interview. It was indicated that 197 out of 136 students (72.1%) had low Willingness to Communicate in English. Besides, it was disclosed that there were four most discouraging factors affecting students’ WTC, namely language anxiety, task-type, teachers’ and students’ rapport, and class size. Abstract

This study is to investigate the contrastive structure of Theme/ Rheme analysis in identifying marked and unmarked Themes in English and Indonesian headlines. The study takes as its starting point the assumption that the different choices of Theme/ Rheme, their organization at the local and global structures and the pres-entation of Given/New information of the headlines presented in English and Indonesian. This study designs a Discourse Analysis. It analyzes Theme/Rheme in Indonesian and English clauses. The study seeks to ana-lyze and compare the different choices of Theme/Rheme in the thematic structures. These issues are investi-gated in a corpus of English and Indonesian headline about lieu of law on direct regional election. Most of the Theme used was marked themes. Abstract

The study suggests how figurative language is related to the description of characterization in children litera-ture. To ensure that the indirectness of the figurative language actually helps describing characterizations further, the study focuses on the description of the simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, and irony (Rozakis, 1999) of the main characters of Wilde’s The Nightingale and the Rose. The analysis on the figura-tive language uses is used as the base for interpreting the story’s characterization. It reveals that figurative language describes characterization relating to the information on the characters’ mental and physical attrib-utes. Each of the figurative language categories describes the characterization in certain way in order to make the particular abstract concepts for characterization detailed and concrete. In that case, with the help of figu-rative language, the story may be comprehended better by young readers. Abstract

It is widely agreed that the main aim of translation education is to develop students’ translation competence, therefore most researches in translation education contexts focus on identifying the components of transla-tion competence and appropriate curriculum models that integrate these components with suitable teaching strategies. Since translation competence consists of many sub-competences, developing these sub-competences therefore should be the main consideration in translation education. This article is aimed at discussing translation competence in general and how this competence should be de-veloped in a translation class context. Understanding these sort of things is important in formulating the best approach in translation teaching and learning in order to avoid the possible overlap between ‘translation teaching’ and ‘language teaching’, due to the fact that in some cases what the students get in translation class is not ‘how to be a good translator’ but ‘how to be a good language learner’. Further, understanding the nature of students’ translation competence and how this should be developed can give an important conceptual framework in formulating a better translation curriculum which considers all aspects the students need to build their translation competence.
