Journal of English Language and Literature (JELL) is a journal published by STIBA-IEC Jakarta. This journal is published two times a year (March and September). The main purpose of this journal is to advance and foster English Language Teaching or education, research, and Literature. The journal provides research to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language or in Literature, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field. The Journal calls for unpublished original manuscripts to be considered for publication. The papers submitted to the Journal should not have already been published elsewhere except circulated as conference presentations, nor should they be submitted simultaneously to another journal. JELL publishes the article twice a year, March and September.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the effectiveness of developing extensive reading through jigsaw technique students of a university in East Jakarta. The method used in this study was qualitative applying the four stages in reading Tales of Terror book. The result shows that each student could answer the comprehension questions with the average score is 86. The students’ achievement in reading comprehension of extensive reading by using jigsaw technique is quite good. The presentation stage shows that most students are able to deliver their understanding of the Tales of Terror book in a very systematic and clear explanation. Referring to the result of the presentation, the writer concluded that jigsaw technique is effective and applicable for the students of university.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the implementation of use English as an instructional language at school. School regulations made to train student discipline Regulations must be followed by students in the learning process as a benchmark for achieving goals of success. Students need to know positive things in getting used to communicating, writing, and slogans In the modern era it is required to have the ability to speak English. English is an International Language. Western countries play an important role in the development of science and technology. If want to be an expert scientist, linguist, and able to compete with other countries and people have skills in English. In Indonesia, English is also used as a graduation standard in schools, The National plus Schools are combining between The National Curriculum recommended by The National Education Standards Agency, it was adopted from The OECD Country Curriculum or ASEAN Countries. The language of instruction uses English. Schools have goal of creating superior individuals, globally competitive and international capacity.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to analyze slang words in Top Five movie. Learning slang is important for people who want to fully understand English either it is formal or informal. The movie is analyzed using the descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected through library and internet research then watch the movie several times. The first analysis of the research is about slang words that used in the movie. The second analysis is about forms of slang that found in the movie. Then the third analysis is about functions of slang words used in the movie. The result of this research indicated that: (1) There are ten slang words that are going to discuss in this research, (2) There are eleven forms of slang that found in the movie; compounding, affixation, phraseology, clipping, initialism, verbification, nominalization, other process, blending, (3) There are nine functions of slang that used in the movie; identification, interaction, secrecy, emotions, humor, toughness, informality, conciseness, and forcefulness.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are: (1) to explain the causes of Eve’s dissociative identity disorder. Eve has three identities in her body; Eve White, Eve Black and Jane; (2) to compare the personalities of each identity; and (3) to discuss more deeply the effect of Eve’s dissociative identity disorder to her psychological condition and her ways in facing dissociative identity disorder. This movie tells about dissociative identity disorder as the effect of unpleasant childhood. The personalities of each identity: Eve White, Eve Black and Jane are very different. They battle to be the master of its body. In analyzing this movie, the writer uses psychological approach because the problems of the movie relate to psychological issue like dissociative identity disorder. The method of research the writer used is qualitative. That means the method of this thesis deliver words rather than numbers as the data to be analyzed. The data in this thesis was collected by home-library. The writer reads books, journals, articles, and some offline books in collecting the data resources.

Abstract

: This study analyzes a film entitled Water for Elephants directed by Francis Lawrence, written by Richard Lagravense. The research focuses on how does Jacob try to fulfill and satisfy his self-actualization need viewed from the Hierarchy of human needs of Abraham H. Maslow’s Theory? This film is carefully and accurately analyzed using the theory of hierarchy of human needs by Abraham H. Maslow. This research uses the qualitative method. The data are analyzed by watching, underlining, understanding, and identifying it. In this research, it find out that in fulfilling and satisfying his self-actualization need, Jacob has distractions from his lower-order needs. So, he must fulfill and satisfy them first to fulfill and satisfy his self-actualization need. In conclusion, he finally succeeds to fulfill and satisfy his self-actualization need by clearing the distractions from his lower-order needs which he fulfill and satisfy them first. Furthermore, people who cannot fulfill his basic needs can potentially do an evil thing.

Abstract

The aims of this research are to solve the English reading problem and to know the effectiveness of using short story in teaching reading. This research is using classroom action research with three cycles. Each cycle consist of four steps; planning, action, observation and reflection. The sample of the research is the seventh grade of Junior High School students. The data are obtained from direct and indirect observation and collaboration. In the direct observation, the data is from field observation and In the indirect one, the data is from the test result. Based on the data collected it is found that some students are active in reading practice through short story technique. Further, the students have more desire and motivation to improve their reading skill. Looking up the evaluation table, the reading from thirty three students in three cycles can be explained; in the first cycle, students get the average score 63.0 or there are thirteen students (39.4%) who achieve the standard of minimum score achievement (65.0). In the second cycle, they get the average score 69.6 or there are twenty eight students (84.8%) who achieved the standard minimum score. While in the third cycle, they get 77.0 on their average sore or all of them (100%) can achieve the standard minimum score. Furthermore, the writer concludes that the use of short story technique approach can be one of the appropriate approach to teach English reading skill for the students

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the form of affixation interference and reduplication of Indonesian language in description text of Thailand exchanged students who learned Indonesian Language in Indonesian Education and Literature department (PBSI), University of Muhammadiyah Tangerang. This study used a qualitative approach with content analysis research method which aimed to explain and interpret the data systematically, thoroughly, and the relationship between the events investigated. The content analysis is a method which is conducted by making inference contextually. The sources of data related to this research language and Literature is morphological interference in description text of Thailand exchanged students learned in UMT. The data collection techniques were gained by observation and document studies. The document study was in from the students’ description text. The result of this research is assumed to be very important since the affixation interference must be handled as early as possible, especially in the world of interference education. Interference is a violation in Indonesian language. How to prevent the spread of interference is to conduct research that occurs in the world of education and fix it as early as possible.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the main characters in Hide and Seek movie as the characters who have psychopathic problem and Dissociative Identity Disorder. In relation to which, the writer studied Hide and Seek movie as the unit of analysis. Psychopathic problems viewed from Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis concepts are used for the review of related literature theories or concepts of the research. Therefore, the method of the research is descriptive qualitative, which tries to explain about the intrinsic elements of the movie; such as characterization and the scenes of the movie, then followed by analyzing them through Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis. Through observations of the scenes and the behavior of the main characters the writer reveals David and Emily have been identified to have psychopathic characters such as manipulative, parasitical, deceitful, power hungry, less empathy, often lie, shallow affect and poor behavioral control. In addition, the causes of such character are trauma and stress viewed from Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis theory

Abstract

English pronunciation mastery is required by English as a foreign language (EFL) students. However, it seems difficult due to several reasons including the differences in producing the English letter comparing with the students’ native language. This study aims to identify the EFL students' voice in learning English pronunciation. A descriptive method was applied involving a group of 22 students from the English education program at STKIP Kusuma Negara, Jakarta, Indonesia as a subject of the research. The data of this study were obtained from an observation, a questionnaire, and a semi-structured interview. The results of this study indicate that all respondent realizes the importance of English pronunciation mastery. In addition, they found many challenges in pronunciation learning such as lack of English pronunciation ability, the influence of students’ mother tongue in producing the English words, uninterested pronunciation learning process, and low motivation in practicing to pronounce the English words. It is important for the English instructors to develop the strategy in delivering English pronunciation lessons based on students’ background including their characteristics as the EFL students.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to describe Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder be shown of the main character and to mention the types of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder that the main character suffers. In this movie, it shows about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Of The Main Character. The movie cuts out a few important people in Cheryl’s real life. In the movie, Cheryl has only one sibling, her younger brother Leif. Cheryl and her father grew particularly close during her mother’s sickness, but after she passed, Eddie remarried and grew distant. Much of Cheryl’s internal monologue during her therapy sessions is made into dialogue with her therapist in the movie. In this movie also explains how to eliminate trauma, by climbing many obstacles by oneself, through many obstacles, so Cheryl feels very grateful for the present life and he realizes that what he does in front must he face, she can not escape from the problem is, because it is history and the future is a mystery that must be dealt with better.
