Abstract

Abstract Learning Japanese is not easy for the beginner, because the Japanese language has unique characteristics in terms of words, letters, intonation, particles, and the sentence structure. Particle is one of part of speech that cannot stand alone, it cannot change its form, and in its use always sticks to another word. However, the particle is one of elements or components that is very important in Japanese, because it serves to show the relationship between words and explains the meaning of the word itself.    Japanese particles according to Sudjianto can be classified into four major groups namely fukujoshi, kakujoshi, setsuzokujoshi and shuujoshi. From each group comprising many types of particles, so the discussion in this paper is limited to the meaning of the particle の (no) that belongs to the groups of kakujoshi and shuujoshi. The results of the analysis on particle meaning of の (no) classified as kakujoshi can be expressed as possessive marker, to modify noun, place of origin / artificial, the location of objects, a comparison between two objects, to nominalize a verb, to express  reason or purpose of doing something. Aside from being kakujoshi, particle の (no) is used also as shuujoshi which is placed at the end of a sentence to express an interrogative, the affirmation of speech, reason, and expressed strongly worded command.             It is realized when studying the function of Japanese particles; many learners still find it difficult, because a particle has many functions and usage. But it is not a barrier for those interested in learning Japanese, provided that they have willingness or motivation to learn. Mastery of a foreign language will lead to brighter future, therefore just learn it! Keywords: fanction, particle "no", kakujoshi, shuujoshi.

Abstract

Abstract

This present study investigated any pattern of phonological form and supra segmental distribution on English utterance of cross marriage couples . The research applied qualitative-descriptive design because the data had a deep phenomenological common ground. Language represents a giving meaning and interpretation towards whatever experienced by speakers and explores the opponents’ intentions in natural way. Subject of the study were the cross-marriage couples taken through snowball technique. The focus of the study was the segmental utterances on discourse context which could show any intention interpreted opponents. The data were in the form of utterances of the couples in any kinds of topics collected by recording them. The data was classified into sound elements analyzed by structural phonology and intention delivery analyzed by speech act theory. From the data, it was found that there was some different phonemic transcription, stress contour, pitch, and range of intonation between the speaker from Bali and Speaker from Australia. This was caused by deeply imprinted Balinese sound concepts. The utterances showed the illocutionary force and perlocutionary force. From the stress pattern, it was found that there were some patterns of transition-relevance place and other-speaker turn repetition that indicated to mull over. The last finding was free variants in discourse. The forms of nasalized vowels in non- nasal context showed that the speaker was complaining.   Key words: supra segmental, utterance, pragmatics, intention

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to find out the common use of present tenses in the students’ writings and the difficulties they faced in using those tenses. The students under concern were the first-semester students of the academic year 2016 taking “English 1” subject at Bali STIKOM Regular Program. This study used the theory of English Grammar and theory of Contrastive Analysis. The English Grammar theory was used to identify and analyze the use of present tenses in the students’ sentences, while the theory of contrastive analysis was used to analyze the students’ difficulties in using those tenses in their writings.  The result of the analysis shows that of the 34 student writings under analysis. 77.4% use simple present tense, 10% present perfect tense, 6.9% present continuous tense, and 5.7% present perfect continuous tense. There are some difficulties faced when using the present tenses. The students seem to ignore the function of the adverb as the basis for deciding the proper forms of the verbs to be used. The students also find it difficult to add ‘-s’ or ‘-es’ accordingly to the infinitive verbs to show agreement with the subjects of the sentences being constructed. In addition, they still show lack of understanding of the function of each type of the present tenses.    Keywords: Sentence, Present Tenses
