Abstract

This study aims to analyze the differences in the concept of women's emancipation displayed by Marlina in the film Marlina the Killer in Four Acts and Anisa in the film Perempuan Berkalung Sorban. These films tell different stories about women who fight for their rights, but both have a storyline in which Marlina and Anisa are shackled to a patriarchal culture. This study uses data analysis based on John Fiske's television code theory and semiotic analysis with a gender approach. An in-depth analysis and study show the character of women's emancipation in the second film. First, the Marlina film, The Murderer in Four Acts, shows an emancipated female character who can live independently and dare to defend herself when insulted or sexually harassed by men. Women are also entitled to the same legal justice as men. Meanwhile, the concept of emancipation in the film Perempuan Berkalung Sorban shows the emancipated character of women who have the right to reject polygamy and gain extensive knowledge but remain in their nature as children, mothers, and wives. Women also have the right to express their thoughts and feelings and choose whom they will marry.

Abstract

The discourse of religious moderation needs to be developed with a multidisciplinary approach, including linking it to the study of Sufistic literature. The literary work of the Sufi poetry novel, manthiq ath-thayr, by Fariduddin Attar is expected to be able to inspire the hearts of the readers regarding the importance of religious moderation in the context of nation and state. This article aims to reveal the dimensions of religious moderation in Fariduddin Attar's novel Manthiq Ath-Thayr. The method used in this researcgh is literatuary study with the novel Manthiq Ath-Thayr as the main reference by using a structuralist semiotic approach and Saussure’s theory of markers and signs. It was found that the semiotics in the novel Manthiq Ath-Thayr has strong dimension of values pluralism and religious tolerance. The dimensions of the pluralism value are represented by the three final valleys, namely pure oneness, amazement and absence, while the dimensions of the tolerance value are represented from the four initial valleys, namely search, love, wisdom and freedom. These two dimensions inspire the importance of traditionalizing differences in Indonesia to further strengthen national commitment, not the other way around.

Abstract

In a few decades, the media has become the locomotive that controls the consumptive behavior of society, especially in urban areas. Massive media that aggressively offers easy access to meet all kinds of urban community needs encourages consumerism. The trend of consumerist urban lifestyle in the end must take consequences for environmental damage. As with Fast Food and Fashion which results in increased industrial production, the energy required for production is higher. At the same time, the energy used also comes from the exploitation of the earth. Scholars such as Jean Baudrillard suggest that people do not buy goods, but buy signs that ultimately symbolize themselves to confirm which group they belong to and belong to. To contribute to the existing studies, the study in this article aims to explore and analyze the relation of media to the consumptive behavior of urban society and its impact on environmental damage. By using the perspective of Jean Baudrillard, the media is the most significant contributor that encourages consumerism in urban communities so that it has an impact on environmental damage. The reality of the media has created a false consciousness so that consumer society only consumes signs, not goods and services. The emergence of visual waste impacts urban society's consumerism, resulting in the loss of public space and the strengthening of the greenhouse gas effect.

Abstract

The dynamics of the conflict in Papua which is often volatile and take a long way are the impact of the complexity of the problem since it was integrated with the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. Differences in perspective from the history of integration, discrimination, economic inequality, and human rights violations encourage indigenous Papuans to give birth to an ethnonationalism movement. On the other hand, the dual strategic approach that has been implemented in Papua is both in welfare and security. The Government seeks to improve and facilitate access to the fundamental rights of the Papuan people within the framework of development in line with local wisdom or known as ethno-development. In order to contribute to previous studies, this article attempts to critically analyze the ethnonationalism movement in Papua and the factors that drive the emergence of conflicts and strategic efforts to resolve conflicts through ethnodevelopment. The ethnodevelopment approach is based on the cultural integrity of the local population who play an essential role in actively participating in social change. Ethno-development is also a parameter for the implementation of space for freedom of expression in Papua to acknowledge local culture and wisdom.
