In academic space, this field has increasingly been an intersection -if not a contestation- across disciplines, such as political science, anthropology, sociology, history, economics, media, and cultural studies.

Abstract

The mazhabiyah (school of thought differentiation) issue is conceived as the ultimate problem of Muslims, since a life without mazhab, without ideological point, will be chosen as a the central determinant of social unity. For Abdul Wahid Hasyim, the madzhabiyah is important due to its function as a way of mutual understanding and peace building. He made it as a religious stance in the battle for maintaining the nation unity in diversity. This study attempts to portray religious and political contribution of Abdul Wahid Hasyim in upholding the Indonesian Islam and contructing NKRI. His contribution during Dutch colonialism, Japanese occupation, until independence periods had figured out his spirit as santri in the nation building.

Abstract

The discussion of nafs (desire) is not being easy, since it is one of abstract activator of human action. Since then there are lots of attention given by Muslim scholars or scientists on the relationship between nafs and human being. Imam Al-Ghazali, the 12th century outstanding ulama who had considerable works on Islam and philosophy, attempted to elaborate the concept of nafs, and divided it into three dimensions: al-muthmainnah, al-lawwâmah, and al-ammârah. Al-Ghazali inserted al-muthamainnah into the good desire (al-mahmûdah), while al-lawwâmah and al-ammârah into the bad desire (al-su’). He classified these nafs into certain criterion, and this study attempts to critically analyze this classification and to throughly reflect it under some considerations. In some extents, Al-Ghazali’s conception of nafs should be criticized and reinterpreted in the contemporary era.

Abstract

Occidentalism is basically oriented to deal with westernization with highly intense influence not merely on our conception and culture (Eastern), but also on the freedom of Eastern human with individual faith. Hassan Hanafi, an outstanding intellectual  Muslim who created genial and analytical ideas, attempted to analyze and disclosure silent ideology of Western over Islam. By behalf of the Eastern people through Occidentalism, Hanafi succesffully indicate a racial and ideological conspiration behind Western academic works with the high claim of being more civilized. However, Hanafi’s Occidentalism is not intended to make coup de etat over the Orientalism. For him, the simple aim of the Occidentalism is making self-freedom of the other in order to get the equilibrium between Islamic/Eastern and European/Western worlds in general.

Abstract

The patriarchial system has been considerable in the socio-cultural construction of the parts of world, as it legitimated a fact that male is conceived as having a higher position than female. The existence of religion argues that a theological interpretation is still based on gender bias. The creation of female from male’s rib bone as a result of interpretation to the nafsin wâhidah is basically designed in terms of isrâiliyyât  over the story. By examining many interpretatory books, this article is to argue that nafsin wâhidah in Quran told equality between male and female, not a biological creation of female.

Abstract

The ulama in Archipelago had great contributions to the Islamic studies and sciences. In addition to the Islamic branches, such as hadith, tafsir, and fiqh, there is an important subject of the 17th science, i.e. tasawwuf. It consists of emergence of the sufi orders in Archipelago, including Syattariah which is firstly built by Abdurrauf al-Sinkili with his teachers Al-Qusyasi and Al-Kurani at Haramain (Mecca and Medina). Al-Sinkili is a central figure in his efforts of developing the 17th sufi order in Archipelago. This article attempts to make a chronological map of neo-sufism which became a symbol of integration of the syariah and tasawuf. Furthermore, the development of Sunni orthodoxy is a typical characteristic of social religious landscape friendly with local culture in Archipelago.

Abstract

Group relation within any heterogeneous society in which people with their different characteristics and identities live together tends to run unequally due to the majorities’ domination toward minorities. Their spirit of domination is philosophically based on Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution “The Survival of the Fittest” which later incarnates itself in social domain and is used to justify that their domination upon minority groups is a kind of natural selection process. When this idea is perceived continuously from generation to generation, minorities will be the everlasting disadvantaged victims of the other group’s domination and suffer persistent annihilation and oppression, extending from the most moderate form like prejudice to the most extreme one such as discrimination. Besides being intended to discuss the complicated relation between majority and minority groups and explore the significance of the spirit of domination in determining the dynamics of group relation, this study is also aimed at offering some alternative ways to create egalitarian atmosphere in a heterogeneous society. Indeed, such new future is not impossible to be reached as far as reconciliation process is consistently carried out by both groups. Reconciliation, which might involve assimilation, accommodation, amalgamation, and pluralism, is the main key to realize equal and mutual relation between majority and minority groups.

Abstract

Asbâb al-wurûd, a branch of ulûm al-hadîth focusing on the causes of hadîth, is coincident with asbâb al-nuzûl in ulûm al-qurân. Realizing asbâb al-wurûd is a requirement of understanding hadîth in contextual manner. As we know that hadîth is not merely a source of Muhammad’s utterances, but also his actions, decisions, and attributes. Furthermore, in order to avoid the false hadîth and the misunderstanding of the meaning of hadîth, an understanding of asbâb al-wurûd is necessary. Most of ulama who authored some peculiar books (al-kutub) on asbâb al-wurûd are among others Imam Jalaluddin Al-Suyuthi with his outstanding work Asbâb al-Wurûd al-Hadîth aw Allamu fî Asbâb al-Hadîth.
