Abstract

The Qur’an and other religious texts, mainly functioning as guidelines of life for ummah, has always been an inevitable object to study not only by Muslilms but also by non-Muslims. Any religious texts including the Qur’an have a long history. Every approach has been made to learn and understand the meaning contained in the Qur’an. Therefore, it may be interpreted differently by the ummah in various aspects of their life. There is no guarantee from God that the interpretation is absolutely correct. Why, then, do the people who have the authority think that they are always right? And do others not have such authority?

Abstract

Domestic violence becomes stagnant when faced with the culture of a society. Bad treatment of a wife by her husband because of disobedience or other reasons seems to be legitimized by religion and culture. A husband seems to have the right to treating his wife as he wishes. To understand domestic violence as a form of violence against women we need to look at it from women’s perspective. Without doing so, we will be trapped in myths leading us to a culture of victimizing women. The beating of a wife by a husband which is allowed in certain cases by religion should not be interpreted in a physical context but rather in a metaphoric-contextual perspective.

Abstract

Lately, religion has become something scary and worrying. Religion in the hands of its followers often appears with a violent face and seems to have lost its friendliness. In recent years, there have been a lot of conflicts, intolerance and violence in the name of religion and belief in various regions in Indonesia. In the context, it becomes reasonable when certain people call religion the source of the problem in the world. The religious views that tend to be anachronistic potentially leads to conflict. In fact, to say that religion is a source of problem is clearly not wise and unhistorical, due to the fact for centuries, religion has given contribution to millions of people. In the context of eliminating the destructive aspects of religion and presenting constructive side of it as a unifying factor, schools as an institution mandated to educate the nation should take part in providing an understanding of religion and should be capable of creating an environment that provides educational opportunities to students to construct harmonious social relations between students of different religion.

Abstract

Many people hold a negative perception of the existing tarekat (path for mystics to follow especially Sufism). This attitude is the result of the exclusiveness of the tarekat’s programs. One of the exclusive programs is the asbal activity in the tarekat of Naqsyabandiyah Muzhariyah in Pontianak. Besides, in the asbal activity rebana (tambourine) is used to accompany praise to Rasulullah (Messenger of God) which allows of many interpretations among the society. However, it can be explained that the exclusiveness of the asbal activity is aimed at avoiding suspicion in conducting tarekat which may result in bid’ah and the practice of tarekat without bai’at. The asbal activity also contain aspects of collective guidance which will further be elaborated in this writing.
