Abstract

Notion of “wani ing tata” basically is manifestation of noble conception to regard women having dignity in society. That actualization then explained in dual roles which operated in both areas; domestic and social engangement. The words “wanita” basically has been encountered in three social realms such as “wanodya” and “putri”. Those three concepts symbolized multifunctional roles that ascribed women as educator, nurse, and balancer. Javanese women leadership proved by prominent famous figure like Queen Shima, Tribhuana Tungga Dewi, and Suhita. In this case, its conception has ramified into both others notion; ardhaneswari and prameswari. Prameswari can be understood as main women; meanwhile ardhananeswari can be explained as tough and strong women. The emergence of patriarchal system into sociey reduced concept of “wani ing tata”. It puts women as inferior symbolized by “kasur”, “pupur’, and “sumur”.

Abstract

Police institution is one of the institutions adopting a strong patriarchal culture. Indonesian National Police (Polri) is doing many jobs to accommodate public demand in relation to the women participation in Polri and to create an institution that issues gender-friendly policies. Many efforts have been done by Polri such as increasing the recruitment quota for policewoman (Polwan) and issuing a policy permitting Polwan to wear hijab. However, there is an interesting policy that relates to Polwan, namely Make-up allowance provided only for Polwan. The provision of Make-up allowance shows that the Polwan is forced to look pretty by wearing make-up. It raises a question on how the role of Polwan in Polri institution is. Even though the recruitment number of Polwan in Polri has been increased but in reality, Polwan is still places in domestic sphere. This is indeed not according to the objective of Polri as a genderfriendlyinstitution especially for women. This is a qualitative research by using the concept of beauty of myth and objectification and comodification concept in analyzing the problem.

Abstract

This paper attempts to analyze how Indonesian gay males and transgenders male to female in two different social, cultural and political contexts (in Indonesia and Northern Europe) are actively engaged in the making of their own subjectivity. Their subjectivities are entangled with gender, sexuality, religion, romantic love relationships and kinship. They juggle in negotiating and making sense of norms and values of societies that projected towards them. This paper aims to shed light on gender politics of gay and transgender Indonesians in the context of heterosexual hegemony and migration.

Abstract

The Draft of the Indonesian Criminal Code has provoked a debate, especially with regard to the articles under the scope of decency. The formulation of Article 488 has the potential to create new problems for women. Especially women who have obstacles in accessing legal identity. This Article 488 is a reflection of the failure of jurists to formulate laws, in understanding women's experience in relation to their access to the right to obtain legal identity, especially in the context of relationship. The criminal law is not the answer to all problems. This paper is compiled using data obtained from field study related to the handling of cases of violence against women under customary law, carried out by the authors and the team from Legal and Community Studies Fields in 2015, 2016 and 2017 in Eastern Indonesia; as well as data on legal and non-legal text analysis. The overall method and analysis of research findings using feminist legal studies and feminist legal theories.

Abstract

As world develops toward a digital and informational society, feminism finds its place in challenging situation. Numbers of women involved in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) are progressively increasing in 21st century. However, the questionremains whether this rising number has significant impact for feminist movement in science, knowledge, and technology. The development of science and technology, foreseeably enough, is quite inimical to feminism1. Using epistemological feminist approach, this paper aims to analyze the contemporary problem of feminism in technology, how its discourse needs to be more developed and critically assessed. I find that feminism needs to broaden its critics not only in term of social-political practice of women in technology, but also it needs to establish its own bodily knowledge in seeking for so-called feminist technology.

Abstract

Cities and women have experienced the most vulnerable condition under the premise of economic development specifically those living in poverty. Women working in informal sectors are portrait of vulnerable family in cities where men as breadwinner sometimes unable to fulfill the financial basis. They then have to take the risks of living in slum areas in a prohibited territorial area that unable providing basic needs such as clean water, good air ventilation, sanitation, air circulation, and public or common room. Accumulation of this migration to cities has transformed cities into the most vulnerable place to live for those having no money—gentrification.

Abstract

In Beijing Platform Action (BPFA) in 1995, one of the twelve critical issues is the girl-child. Referring to the reality in many countries that girls from an early age are treated discriminately and harmfully into practices such as female genital mutilation, sex selection before the baby is born, even the killing of female infants, violence against girls, child marriage, sexual exploitation, sexual abuse, discrimination against girls in provision, protection, & participation and other discriminatory practices, such as regarding the health and welfare facilities for girls. This paper will examine Indonesia’s efforts to reduce the marriage of girls.

Abstract

It is important to study the autonomy of women's autonomy, because it is relational, multidimensional and influences the lives of women, especially regarding actions and decision-making in all aspects of their lives. This research explores the autonomy of female household heads (PEKKA) in savings and loan activities at a microfinance institution both individually and collectively. Pekka's individual autonomy is seen in the context of power through power within, power to, and power over, while collective autonomy is in line with the power with concept offered by Linda Mayoux. This study uses a qualitative approach with a female perspective. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews with five subjects that were selected purposively. The results showed that participation in savings and credit activities increased the autonomy of individual female heads of household more significantly compared to collective autonomy in groups.
