Journal Albion Journal of English Literature, Language, and Culture. Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the anxiety that has been experienced by the main character from the novel If I Was Your Girl by Meredith Russo. Through the analytical descriptive method and supported with psychoanalysis theory, the present writer also concludes that the main character has experienced the anxiety, which gives the influence in her social life. This anxiety is influenced by the internal and external factors. Two differences background which affected are sexual disorder behavior of the main character and harsh environment which made the main character has experienced the anxiety as long as her life. That matter also influences the character’s psychology. The anxiety effect gives too much mental pressure to the main character. Keywords: Anxiety, Main Character, Psychoanalysis, Transgender

Abstract

AbstractThe main topic of this research is the struggle of an African-American woman in facing discriminatory treatment.  It is a study on the main character in Margot Lee Shetterly's novel: Hidden Figures. The process of this research involves the overall story, intrinsic elements: character and characterization, conflict, setting and plot and also extrinsic elements: liberal feminisme, multicultural feminism and racism. This qualitative research is conducted by applying descriptive analysis method along with library research technique, leading to the identification that racism and feminism turns out to cause discrimination. The main character, Katherine, undergoes dicrimination on  education and employment for African-American people. These experiences eventually prompts the main character to fight against discrimination by proving that she is capable of becoming the first black woman who works for NASA.Keywords : discrimination, female main chracter, feminism, racism, struggle

Abstract

Abstract This research discusses sexual sadism disorder as the form of the main character’s psychopathicpersonality in the novelFifty Shades Darker by E.L. James. The purpose of this research is to denote the characteristics of psychopath and to analyze the process and the cause that lead the main character to behave psychopathically. The research is conducted by means of descriptive analysis method. The result of this research shows that the main character has a psychopathic personality disorder in the form of sexual sadism disorder based on behaviors that denotes psychopathic characteristics, such as charm, egocentric, lack of remorse, lack of empathy, deceitful and manipulative, shallow emotions, impulsive, poor behavior controls, need for excitement, lack of responsibility, early behavior problems, adult antisocial behavior. The psychological trauma in his childhood and the experience of sexual intercourse with Elena in the past of the main character is the process and the cause in the formation of the main character’s sexual sadism disorder. Keyword:  fifty shades darker, psychopathy, sexual sadism

Abstract

 Abstract This thesis is titled "An Analysis on Adjective Clause in Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe." This study aims to show the dominant function and type of adjective clause. In addition, this research is also conducted to show the fragmentary differences between Early Modern English and Modern English. The researcher used the adjective clause theory of Oshima and Hogue which included 6 functions and 2 types of adjective clause. The method used in this study is library qualitative or in other words library research.From this study, it can be concluded that 94 clauses data with functions and types of adjective clause were found and the dominant function of the adjective clause was relative pronoun as object 35 data equivalent to 37.23%. The difference in fragment between Early Modern English and Modern English is occured in the use of suffix –st, -est, and –t, the use of do auxiliaries, the use of pronoun thou, the use of the word will vs shall and the use of demonstrative pronoun.Keywords : adjective clause, functions and types of adjective clause.

Abstract

AbstractThis study aims at denoting the features of female speech and its functions that Michelle Obama applied in the Talk Show United States of Women Summit. In addition, the purpose of this study is to also denote the features of male speech, so as to see which feature is the most dominant in use. The study results in the finding of 18 data of women's utterances. There are 7 types of speech features consisting of 2 data adjectives, 1 datum of tag question, 2 data of raising intonations on declaratives, 1 datum of avoidance of strong swear words, 6 data of emphatic stress, 2 data of lexical hedges and 3 data of intensifiers. The female speech features in the analysis serve as hedges device and booster device. The present writer also sees that Michelle uses two types of male speech features in 4 data, they are 3 pieces of minimal responses and 1 command and directive. Therefore, it can be said that the use of female speech features in this research are more dominant than male's.Keywords: men’s speech features, women’s speech features, functions of women’s speech features.

Abstract

Abstract This research, is an analysis on the main character’s struggle to obtain her freedom based on The Underground Railroad, a novel by Colson Whitehead. The purpose of this research aims at the displaying modes of oppressions that the main character has to undergo as a dark-skinned slave secretly trying to find  ways to escape. The data are analyzed with qualitative descriptive analysis method involving the intrinsic aspects and the theory of forms of oppression by Iris Young. In support of this study, library research technique is used for additional sources. The research results in the identification that the main character has to undergo fivefaces of oppression: exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, cultural imperialsm, and violence. Eventually, it turns out that both internal and external factors have brought her a success in escaping from slavery and in winning her freedom. Keywords : black-skinned, freedom, oppression, slavery

Abstract

Abstract   This study discusses the components of events and the use of language variations of the central figure in The Greatest Showman movie (2017). The purpose of this research is to explain how to use speech and the use of language variations of central figures. This study discusses the emergence of speech events and variations in usage on central character. The method used is descriptive qualitative research method with proficient free listening techniques. The results of data analysis show that the speech component always appears for each variety language and there are four languages variations from five different languages. The variety of languages that are often used by central figures is a consultative style, and the variety that is very little used is the formal style and casual style. For the results, it can be concluded that there are 41 variations in the variety of languages found in Michael Gracey's The Greatest Showman movie ; (7) Official variations or variations (Formal); (17) Variations or types of business (Consultative); (7 ) Casual variation or variety, and (8) Intimate variation or variety (Intimate). Of the 41 data found in the film there are 7 formal types with a percentage of 17%, 17 different types of businesses with a percentage of 42%, 7 types of casualties with a percentage of 17% and 10 intimate varieties with a percentage of 20%.Keywords : Sosiolinguistic, components of speech events, language variations, central figure.

Abstract

Abstract   This research is a study of Colleen Hoover’s novel It Ends With Us. The purpose of this study is to reveal forms and impacts of gender-based violence and efforts of the female main character to overcome all the hardship. The main issue in this novel is gender-based violence againts the female main character named Lily Bloom. In this research, descriptive analysis method is used in studying the intrinsic theories, and extrinsic theories such as gender and feminism for supporting elements. The findings of this research points that Lily experiences several forms of gender-based violences such as child abuse, physical attacks, domestic violence, pornography violence, and an act of rape. Besides that, the physical and psychological impacts are also identified. Eventually, Lily can overcome her hardship by improving her financial condition, living independently, divorcing her abusive partner, and becoming a single parent. Both internal and external factors are in support of her measure to survive and live a better life. Keywords: feminism, gender, gender-based violence, women
