Abstract

Malocclusion is a change in the normal relationship between the skeletal structure, muscles and teeth which can cause functional impairment and changes in the esthetics of the stomatognathic system. Malocclusion is the third most important oral health problem after caries and periodontal disease. The process of malocclusion can occur from early childhood with a prevalence reaching 89.9%. Malocclusion is very prone to occur in the mixed dentition period. This article aims to discuss about the pre-vention of malocclusion that occurs in children.

Abstract

Haemostasis disorders are classified as coagulation factor deficiency, platelet disorders, vascular disorders and fibrinolytic de-fects. Haemophilia belongs to the first group of these diseases which are inherited recessively linked to the X-chromosome. Haemophilia is clinically characterised by serious and prolonged bleeding. Bleeding of the oral mucosa is often an incidental finding in children with haemophilia. A 1-year-old boy with complaints of persistent bleeding of the gums due to trauma by impact of a plastic water bottle since ±9 days was reported. The management of the case was routine blood tests, PT, aPTT and coagulation factor concentrations, debridement and hecting vulnus under general anaesthesia, joint care with the paedia-tric department of the HOM division, and administration of factor VIII injection. It was concluded that haemophilia is a seri-ous congenital bleeding disorder that requires early diagnosis. Anamnesis, clinical examination, supporting examination, and management must be prompt and appropriate to prevent further complications.

Abstract

Oral mucositis is an inflammation that occurs in the oral mucosa due to side effects of cancer therapy in the form of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and chemoradiotherapy. The condition of severe oral mucositis can worsen the prognosis of cancer treatment and reduce the patient's quality of life. One method to reduce the severity of oral mucositis is cryotherapy. The purpose of this systematic review is to review the effectiveness of oral cryotherapy using the ice cube method in preventing and reducing the severity of oral mucositis. This review was conducted using PRISMA guidelines. Article searches were conducted using five electronic databases, namely PubMed, Science Direct, Cochrane, Scopus and Springer Link for articles published 2017-2022 using specific keywords. The criteria were limited to randomized controlled trial in hu-man, full text, and in English only. The results were the incidences of oral mucositis, the severity and pain scores in patients. The study quality graded using the Modified Jadad Scale. There were seven articles that met the eligibility criteria for analysis. It is concluded that the majority of studies prove that oral cryotherapy using ice cubes is effective in preventing and reducing the severity of oral mucositis.

Abstract

The long-term use of 0.2% chlorhexidine (CHX) to inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans is detrimental so that alterna-tives are needed, including turmeric and red ginger; both contain antibacterial. This study aims to compare the inhibition of turmeric extract with red ginger against S.mutans in vitro. Inhibition test with agar disk diffusion method and nutrient agar (NA) culture media. Turmeric and red ginger extract 15%, 30%, 60%, control (+) CHX 0.2%, control (-) aquadest. One-way Anova test extracts of turmeric and red ginger were significantly different (p<0.05). The LSD test of turmeric or red ginger extract 15%, 30%, 60% was significantly different from aquadest. Both 60% extracts have the same value (0.098) not signifi-cantly different from CHX. T-test of 60% extract between the two (1.00) was not significantly different (p>0.05). Extracts of turmeric and red ginger 15%, 30%, 60% are able to inhibit S.mutans compared to aquadest. Extracts of 60% turmeric and red ginger were not significantly different from CHX. Both 60% extracts were not significantly different. It is concluded that tur-meric and red ginger extracts 15%, 30%, 60% were able to inhibit S.mutans, and both 60% extracts were not significantly dif-ferent, but had similar efficacy to CHX in vitro.

Abstract

Chronic hepatitis can lead to liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Cirrhosis of the liver appears asymptoma-tic so it is not detected, including during dental treatment. Oral manifestations of cirrhosis of the liver include candidiasis, li-chen planus, ulcers, xerostomia, erosions, and tongue abnormalities. Immunosuppressant conditions in patients with liver cir-rhosis and the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics can cause oral candidiasis. A 69-year-old male who came with complaints of right abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, weakness, and bloody bowel movements for 1 week. The patient complains of a sto-mach that is getting bigger and feels tight. The patient was diagnosed with cirrhosis liver and HCC. Oral manifestations in patients with liver cirrhosis include bacterial and fungal infections such as dental caries, periodontitis, and candidiasis. Oral candidiasis is inflammation of the oral mucosa caused by infection with the fungus Candida albicans which is an opportunistic microorganism. Drugs that can be given in first-line candidiasis conditions are nystatin, ampotesin B, and clotrimazole. It is concluded that one of the oral manifestations in liver cirrhosis was oral candidiasis due to immunosuppressant conditions.

Abstract

Cancers are serious diseases with various etiologies mainly due to unhealthy dietary habits and lifestyles. However, almost all drugs used for anti-cancer therapy are usually toxic and generally affect normal healthy cells, hence the search for new com-pounds that are effective, non-toxic and natural. In particular, algae contain many valuable components with great anti-cancer potential. Carrageenan is a general term describing a group of sulphated polysaccharides in red algae that present a major com-ponent of the cell wall and interstitial space functioning as a forming compound and providing intercellular adhesion and inter-cellular signalling. Carrageenan isolated from red algae has been the object of drug discovery over the past few decades as it exhibits anti-cancer capabilities.

Abstract

Caries can cause dental pain that can reduce children's activities and reduce appetite, which in turn can interfere with children's physical growth. Poor parental attitudes can cause anxiety in children and affect the incidence of oral disease because it makes children less likely to maintain oral hygiene or increased sugar consumption, has been shown to cause plaque accumulation which increases the risk of caries. The study aimed to determine the effect of parental attitudes in feeding on the occurrence of early caries in preschool children. This study used an analytic observational method and was included in a cross-sectional research design. The statistical test used was Spearman; on 60 samples. Based on the results of the Spearman correlation test, the p-va-lue of 0.002 is smaller than 0.05 in the control of eating (COE) category. This means that there is an influence of parental at-titudes in feeding on early caries in children. It is concluded that there is an influence of parental attitudes in feeding on early caries in preschool children, namely in the COE category.

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic condition that describes the inhibition of child growth due to long-term malnutrition. This condition is an advanced manifestation of the high of low birth weight (LBW) and malnutrition during toddlerhood. One of the causes of child stunting is malnutrition; while good nutrition is necessary for health. Nutrition also plays an important role in the development and defense of oral health, especially teeth and gingiva. The condition of healthy or unhealthy teeth and gingiva can affect child-ren's food intake because children who are malnourished will have an increased risk of high caries due to reduced salivary func-tion as a buffer, cleanser, and antibacterial in the oral cavity. The study discussed the relationship between stunting and caries sta-tus in children aged 3-5 years in Parangloe District, Gowa Regency. Analytic observational study with cross sectional design using hard file questionnaire. Data were tested using Pearson correlation. The sample consisted of stunted children recorded at the Parangloe Health Center in 2021, as many as 30 respondents, showing a p-value coefficient of 0.047 (p<0.05) which means there is a significant relationship. It is concluded that there is a relationship between stunting and caries status in children aged 3-5 years in Parangloe District, Gowa Regency in 2021.
