Abstract

Supernumerary teeth are additional teeth found on the incisors and molars. A distomolar supernumerary tooth usually mani-fests as a fourth molar tooth distal to the third molar. Distomolar can cause complications such as delayed eruption, dental ca-ries at the distal third molar, and sometimes pain. In this article, a case of distal third molar extraction dealing with complica-tions, especially pain, is reviewed. A 28-year-old male patient presented with pain in a distally impacted RB left third molar. The affected tooth and supernumerary tooth were surgically extracted. It was concluded that surgical extraction of distally impacted molars had a positive effect of pain reduction.

Abstract

Removable orthodontic appliances have acrylic resin-based plate components that often result in plaque retention and bacterial build-up, leading to dental and periodontal problems. Several studies have tried adding nanoparticles to acrylic resins to over-come these problems. This review discusses the effect of nanoparticle addition on the antimicrobial properties of orthodontic removable acrylic resin. A literature review was conducted on 10 articles obtained from PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar by determining inclusion, exclusion and keyword criteria. Literature search using boolean search based on inclusion criteria obtained data that the addition of various nanoparticle materials such as zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, magnesium oxide produces good antimicrobial properties, especially in the process of inhibiting microbial adhesion. It is concluded that the addi-tion of nanoparticles to acrylic resin orthodontic appliances provides effective antimicrobial properties so that it can be applied clinically to prevent diseases in the oral cavity such as gingivitis and dental caries.

Abstract

Halitosis is a general term used to describe the smell or odor that is not preferred when air is blown, regardless of whether the substance of odor derived from oral or non-oral. Tea (Camellia sinensis) is the most widely consumed beverage in the world communities; green tea and black tea are commonly known. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of rin-sing the decoction water of green tea and black tea to decrease halitosis. The method used is quasi-experimental study in which subjects was 50 people, divided into two groups: 25 person rinse with decoction water of green tea and 25 person rinse with de-coction water of black tea. Measuring the level of the halitosis in all samples taken before and after treatment. The results show-ed that there were significant differences between the two treatment groups, ie sig. 0.048 amounted less than 5% (p<0.05). The conclusion is rinsing using decoction water of green tea is more effective to eliminate halitosis than rinsing using decoction wa-ter of black tea.

Abstract

Extraction commonly used in orthodontic treatment with crowding teeth. However, the total functional effect caused by extrac-tion and orthodontic treatment remains unclear. This study is aimed to explain the effect of orthodontic treatment with and with-out extraction procedures on dental morphology and masticatory function. The study was conducted using a cross-sectional study design, consisting of pre- and post-treatment groups (25 cases of extraction and 22 cases of non-extraction); and the long-itudinal study consisted of 23 extraction cases and 3 non-extraction cases. Morphological and functional recording was carried out with several assessments, including irregularity index values, masticatory efficiency, number of occlusal contacts, and EMG analysis. Cross sectional, irregularity index showed a significant decrease in malocclusion (p<0.005). There was no significant change in masticatory efficiency. The occlusal contacts of extraction cases (A and C) tend to increase. The activity of the tem-poral (T) muscle was greater than that of the masseter (M) on EMG analysis. Almost all the results from the longitudinal stu-dies support the results from the cross-sectional studies. Results showed functional data immediately after extraction and amidst dynamic treatment decreased with occlusion instability. Both extraction and non-extraction cases improved morphologically and functionally after orthodontic treatment. It can be concluded that extraction of 4 premolars is not always associated with a negative impact on stomatognathic function when proper orthodontic treatment is performed after extraction.

Abstract

Anxiety in pediatric patients is often found in dental practice. It is triggered by several components such as encountering unfami-liar adults, unfamiliar sounds and feelings, having to lie down for treatment, discomfort, and even pain. So that the need for be-havior management in pediatric patients in dental procedures. This case discusses the behavior management of a 6-year-old child who is accompanied by his mother and will undergo dental restoration treatment (ART). It is known that the child has a his-tory of unpleasant dental treatment and traumatizes the child in dental treatment. During the treatment process in dealing with the child's attitude, a combination of several behavior management techniques was applied such as tell-show-do, use of second lang-uage, and the presence of parents, where the application of these techniques succeeded in influencing the child's attitude which at the first appointment was negative to become positive at the second appointment and definitely positive at the third appoint-ment. It is concluded that it is important for dentists to analyze the proper technique in dealing with the behavior of pediatric patients so that dental treatment can run well and effectively.

Abstract

The type of denture bridge with pier abutments where there are stand-alone abutment teeth between the abutment terminals, requires the dentist to pay special attention. One crown is attached to a natural tooth, and the other crown is attached to a dental implant or other type of abutment, known as the pier abutment that can become a class I fulcrum if restored using a 5-unit bridge with rigid connectors, which can cause excessive force to be received by the retainer at the abutment terminal, leading to debonding of the retainer or even damage to the periodontal tissues of the abutment teeth. In addition to these problems, long-span bridges have a poor prognosis due to the mobility difference between the anterior and posterior teeth, which may cause excessive stress on the connector. The use of a non-rigid connector can overcome this problem, as it can be a stress breaker by allowing micro-movements in the connector. The design of semi-rigid bridge with pier abutments must consider factors such as span length, anticipated occlusal load, and mastication factor. Proper consideration of these factors ensures the safety and longevity of the bridge.

Abstract

Eyeball loss is a traumatic process as it can cause functional, media, psychological and aesthetic problems. Patients who re-quire treatment with specialised eye prostheses are those who have lost ocular structures through removal of orbital contents or orbital enucleation to accelerate physical and psychological healing and improve aesthetics. This article reports the fabrication of an eye prosthesis as a rehabilitative treatment in a patient who had undergone orbital enucleation. A 38-year-old man came to RSGMP Universitas Hasanuddin Makassar referred by an ophthalmologist with complaints of left eyeball loss due to trauma. The patient wanted to have a prosthetic eye made immediately to restore his appearance and self-confidence. Examination of the eye socket showed a healthy conjunctiva and no infection. The treatment was the fabrication of a non-fabricated eye pros-thesis made from acrylic resin. The fabricated non-fabricated eye prosthesis had advantages in terms of retention, stability, aes-thetics and patient comfort. It was concluded that the ocular prosthesis can reduce the psychological trauma caused by the loss of the eyeball, thus increasing the patient's confidence in social life.
