Abstract

Writing as a productive skill in English has been valued greatly, especially in an academic context. The process approach was started to be considered when teaching writing as it offers more meaningful learning. Furthermore, the approach makes room for collaborative learning between students and teachers. For EFL students whose first language is not English, mastering writing skills could be more challenging. To address the issues, the idea of a writing center has been adapted to a higher educational level for students who want to improve their writing. The study was conducted by using a qualitative descriptive approach and its data collection was carried out through a number of instruments to fulfill the triangulation method of a qualitative approach such as observation, semi-structured interviews, surveys, and corpus-based research. From the eight purposive sampling of tutees and the four tutors, the study concluded that EFL students are not familiar with the process of writing, so many of them consider having support merely on revising their essay draft. Even though collaborative writing was successfully carried out, but EFL students need to improve their independent study to follow up on the discussion they had with the tutors.

Abstract

Translation of written texts has been a part of international communication for centuries, but courses in how to do it are more recent. This study reports a case study from the context of a Moroccan university where translation courses are taught in two parts. In one semester the students learn about translation from English to Arabic and the next from Arabic to English. We report the teachers’ perspectives on the translation course from Arabic into English, along with the results of the students’ translations based on 400 examination answers. The analysis and discussion of the results will reveal the shortcomings for the current teaching practice of translation; they will also suggest new ways of customizing the course for more effective acquisition of English language as a medium for boosting intercultural communication, the most probable prerequisite for today’s access in the job market.

Abstract

Teaching practicum is a compulsory course for students majoring in education program. Through teaching practicum, student teachers can gain experiences before becoming real teachers. However, there are some students who still feel anxious towards teaching practicum. Therefore, this study aimed to find out the factors contributing to student teachers’ anxiety during teaching practicum and the strategies to cope with the anxiety. The participants of this study were six student teachers who had done their teaching practicum at a private senior high school in Central Java. The data were collected qualitatively by using semi-structured interviews to get in-depth information from the participants. The findings revealed that facing a new environment, school teachers and students’ attitudes, lesson plans and teaching materials, the ways of presenting the materials, time management, availability of AVAs, and observation by mentor teachers and the supervisor were the factors that contributed to student teachers’ anxiety during teaching practicum. The strategies used by student teachers to cope with their anxiety were adapting themselves with the new environment, preparing well before teaching, building good rapport with school teachers and students, creating a good learning environment, prioritizing the most crucial teaching part, and doing relaxation.

Abstract

Myriad studies have been discussing the role of subtitle for improving students’ vocabulary mastery. Yet, the use of English subtitle in Korean dramas is scarcely explored. Within a qualitative approach, this study aims at investigating how Indonesian EFL university students employ Korean dramas with English subtitle for improving their vocabulary. Twenty-three EFL university students were involved to participate in this study. Interview and questionnaire were applied as data collection methods. The results of the study revealed that the students enjoyed learning vocabulary through English subtitle while watching Korean dramas. They were motivated to learn vocabulary because of interesting storyline, editing effect and scene/setting served by Korean dramas. Pedagogically, this study implies that learning vocabulary can be done in regards with the students’ interests, including watching Korean dramas. Further research focusing on the employment of English subtitle for improving reading skill is interestingly to be carried out.
