Abstract

In the era where fictional works are popular with teenagers while there are still challenges in understanding English, the researchers conducted a study to develop stories with the title “Berteman itu Sulit”. One of the challenges is the lack of varied learning material in grammar learning. The researchers propose to develop an English material based on the students’ own life context, that is mental health, to make the post-pandemic learning process interesting. The short stories are used as English mindful material with 5 tenses included; simple present tense, present continuous tense, simple past tense, past continuous tense, and present perfect tense. In developing short stories, the researchers went through 4 steps; 1) story development; 2) validation; 3) publication; 4) trying out 10 EFL students from random schools. With a total of 13 parts, the stories are being published on Wattpad platform, the most popular fiction reading site in the post-pandemic era. There are three things to be underlined as the result; 1) the content for grammar material is adequate; 2) the learning material is validated as mindful and suitable for students to read; 3) the try-out questionnaire showed positive results of EFL learners’ perspective to the material.

Abstract

Most academic learning situations involve multimedia learning since students encounter words and graphics, ranging from multimedia encyclopedias to online educational games to textbooks. Multimedia has become increasingly used to help learning and cognition. As technology advances, educators are required to be more creative when creating learning devices. Teachers and lecturers need to develop an instructional design that can address the needs of the students. ADDIE model is one of the most effective tools in developing educational products and other learning resources, including multimedia technology. This paper attempts to explore how multimedia in various levels of EFL classrooms in Indonesia are developed using the ADDIE model in particular. Nationally accredited articles were categorized based on similar themes to multimedia development using ADDIE model to be analyzed. Most of the articles showed a successful development and implementation of the media used in teaching reading, listening, writing vocabulary, and language functions. The multimedia: worksheets, websites, applications, cards, and videos, are mostly rated highly by the expert. The validity and practicality were also high. However, some of the articles did not mention the principles and details of the process of multimedia development.

Abstract

Studies on the move analysis in the various sections of research articles have developed rapidly. However, the studies on the communicative moves in the discussion section particularly written by vocational college students are still limited. In fact, those students categorized as the novice writers inevitably need illustrations of how to write the proper discussion related to their findings. Therefore, this study was aimed at exploring the communicative moves and the move cycle series in the discussion sections of the final project reports written by EFL vocational college students in one of the state polytechnics in Indonesia. The method used is a discourse analysis on 15 discussion sections. The results showed that Move II, Move IV, and Move I were used frequently in all students’ discussion sections. Pertaining to the move cycle series, students fulfilled the rhetorical functions of introduction (1) and evaluation (4+2 or 2+4) but the cycle for showing the conclusion was commonly not used. The results provide references and the real applications pertinent to communication moves in the discussion section by EFL students.
