Abstract

A high-stakes test has been indicated to be negatively linked to teachers and students in the classroom. However, little is known about the impact of such tests on the teachers and students or those who are involved indirectly in their lives. Using an individual interview with eight English teachers from eight junior secondary schools, this study examines the correlation between the high-stake test with performativity mechanism in the pincer of markets and neoliberalism. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the qualitative data taken from the interviews. The findings indicated how test results were used as a source of promotion by schools to give stakeholders the knowledge they needed to engage in the marketized educational system fully. For school administrators and policymakers, the conclusions of this article had significant ramifications. High-stakes assessments were logically sound and theoretically justifiable, but a reliance on them too much foreshadowed replacing traditional educational ideals with the market value of education. The study offered fundamental new insights into high stakes testing as a tool of social control and oppression for students, teachers, and schools for adopting a neoliberal paradigm in education. In addition to impeding learning and teaching, the employment of high-stakes tests as performativity mechanisms also altered the work of schools and teachers, who were the front liners of the educational system.

Abstract

An essential component of a student's learning process is motivation. The primary issue, specifically VII A in SMP Khadijah 2 Surabaya academic year 2022/2023, was identified by the researcher as a lack of desire during speaking class. The pupils were apathetic, easily bored, did not participate in the learning process, and did not give the assignment their full attention. The purpose of   the study is to implement the use of field trip videos to increase the students' English speaking motivation and achievement in VIIA students of SMP Khadijah 2 Surabaya so the lack of motivation and achievement can be solved. The research question for this study is how can the use of field trips videos motivate students to speak English? And, how can the use of field trips videos improve students 'English speaking achievement? To address the issue of low motivation and achievement, the researcher employed classroom action research to install field trip videos. To assess the researcher's data, qualitative and quantitative methodologies are both used. The qualitative approach is used to gather data utilizing field notes, surveys, observations, and interviews. For each cycle, data from the speaking    pre- and post-tests are gathered using the quantitative method. The findings show that field trip videos improves students' English speaking motivation and achievement in speaking class. This can be seen from the improvement in each cycle. Nineteen of the twenty-four students received score that exceeded the Minimum Mastery Requirement (KKM).

Abstract

In the 21st century, technology has become the most powerful development in the world. In the last two decades, digital usage has influenced every aspect such as economic, social, political, and education fields. Along with developments that occur every day, in the realm of education, the curriculum has changed in recent years where K13 prioritizes the use of ICT in schools. This study conducted a descriptive qualitative research design that proposed to know teachers' perspective of ICT integration on ELT, specifically about the transition during online to offline class, teacher preparation of using ICT, the effectiveness of using ICT in the class, the obstacle faced when using ICT, students achievement, the use of ICT compared with conventional media, and teachers' interest on ICT. The participants were two English teachers of SMPN 1 Singosari who have applied teaching with ICT and conventional, and using in-depth interview to collect the data. The result revealed that the teachers have interest in studying ICT but still using conventional media. It implied that there was something that needed to be fixed to maximize the use of ICT in the classroom. Furthermore, it is recommended that socialization and training sessions are frequently held to upgrade the expertise and skills in teaching English.
