Abstract

This research aims at developing the Intensive Reading material for the second-semester English Language Education Program students. It is a Research and Development study that was done by using Reeves’ (2000) Design-Based Research model. Tomlinson’s (1998) definition of learning material is also used as one of the considerations in developing the material since the material needed by the students should contribute to the students’ needs. The needs analysis showed that the intensive reading skills are still considered difficult for some students. Additionally, the content of the product is based on the syllabus and the Outcome Based Education (OBE) curriculum. The researchers develop 11 units of Intensive Reading material based on the previous needs analysis data. It covers the descriptive, narrative, recount, and procedure text materials, as those types of text are supposed to be taught in the Intensive Reading class. Moreover, materials related to the intensive reading skills such as scanning, skimming, previewing, predicting, building a powerful vocabulary, context clues, and understanding topic, main idea, and paragraph are also included in the final product. The Intensive Reading materials were validated by two experts and will be tried out to the second-semester students and three English lecturers in the English Language Education Program of Universitas Brawijaya Malang.

Abstract

This study aims to determine teacher perceptions and solutions as well as teaching strategies applied to students' silence while learning English in an EFL classroom. Researchers used qualitative research using case study methods with data collection instruments using structured interviews and observation checklists. The participants of this study were English teachers at SMKN 11 Malang. The data was thematically analyzed, and the findings revealed that the teacher perceived students' silence as psychological and low self-motivation and self-confidence in language learning. This study reveals that the teacher's perception affects all actions implemented in the classroom. The strategy applied by the teacher to deal with this phenomenon is to conduct games-based learning, group discussions, and role-play. This can also be practiced by teachers other than English teachers or novice teachers in dealing with the phenomenon of student silence during the learning process in class.

Abstract

Various methods are used to allow students to be more involved in a meaningful vocabulary learning atmosphere, one of which is using technology-based gamification. This study aims to investigate EFL learners’ perception of technology-based gamification using Baamboozle for English vocabulary learning. Accordingly, following this objective, a qualitative approach was used, with a case study as the research design. In collecting the data, the researchers utilized semi-structured interviews with two high-achieving and two low-achieving students in the 8th grade International Class Program at one of the private junior high schools in Malang, Indonesia. After gaining the data, the researchers analyzed it through three phases: familiarizing and organizing, coding and reducing, and interpreting and representing. The results showed that students respond positively to Baamboozle for vocabulary learning. Their perceptions are then categorized into seven points: 1. Using Bamboozle is an effective way to learn vocabulary; 2. The use of technology in the learning process is important; 3. Learning vocabulary using Baamboozle is more enjoyable; 4. The use of Baamboozle can increase vocabulary; 5. Favorite features of Baamboozle; 6. Students’ difficulties in using Baamboozle; 7. Baamboozle motivates students to learn vocabulary. Thus, utilizing technology-based gamification using Baamboozle is recommended in learning English vocabulary.
