Abstract

The perception of the role of the court in democracy is a complex and frequently debated aspect of political systems. It involves how individuals, institutions, and society at large view the function, powers, and responsibilities of the judiciary within the broader democratic framework. The role of the court is deeply intertwined with the principle of separation of powers, which delineates distinct functions for the legislative, executive, and judicial branches. However, the perception of the court's role in shaping and influencing public policies is a subject of discussion, since the effectiveness of the court in a democracy is closely linked to public trust and legitimacy. Prominent researches argue that the court should actively contribute to policy development, while others believe that its primary function should be limited to interpreting and applying existing laws. As a result, debates often arise over the extent to which the court should exercise its power of judicial review. A perceived lack of impartiality, independence, or transparency can erode public trust, impacting the credibility of the court's decisions and its overall role in democratic governance. While courts have the authority to render judgments, their ability to enforce decisions and ensure compliance with the rule of law relies on the cooperation of other branches and societal actors. The research highlights contrasting viewpoints on the court's responsibility in safeguarding constitutional principles through the rejection of legislative and executive actions that contradict constitutional norms. The core issue revolves around the significance of this and whether it presents a potential threat by enabling the court to supersede decisions made by duly elected representatives of the public.

Abstract

Tausugs, one of the Muslim tribes in the Philippines, express themselves through their kalangan (songs). To explore the rich and vibrant colors of the Tausug culture, this qualitative research study employed a descriptive-analytic approach in the analysis and interpretation of thirty-one (31) Tausug Contemporary Kalangan. Through Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), this study revealed and discussed the literary devices evident as a textual practice in the select kalangan; the social realities about Tausug women that were being communicated by these literary devices; and the perceptions of Tausug women about their social realities. The findings revealed that there was a total of five (5) literary devices evident as a textual practice in the select kalangan. These literary devices paved way to unveiling and explaining the social realities of Tausug women evident in the select kalangan. Despite the rich and colorful cultures of the Tausugs, the social realities of Tausug women prove that a social problem exists in the Tausug society hence must be addressed and resolved. This study proved to be an original contribution to feminist studies aimed at gaining liberation and empowerment for Tausug women.

Abstract

Endorsements trigger arguments and rebuttals about the relevance of political actors by the spokesmen frontline political parties. Previous linguistic studies have focused more on campaign speeches; little attention has been paid to endorsement as a campaign strategy. This study investigated the endorsement speech of Olusegun Obasanjo (OBJ) and rebuttals by supporting and opposing spokesmen of Labour Party (LP), People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and All Progressive Congress (APC) in Nigerian elections, identifying and analysing the locutionary, illocutionary and Pragmatic strategies. The qualitative design was used. Data comprise purposely selected and transcribed texts from Channels Television (CHNLSTV) interview, moderated by Seun Okinbaloye. Data was downloaded from their YouTube channel Mariana Sbisa’s Speech Act, supported by John Searle’s classification of illocutionary, and the textual part of Mey’s Pragmatic Acts were used as the framework. The locutionary strategies of endorsements and rebuttals in the data were: juxtaposition with alternative facts, conscious denial of position and facts, affirmation of thoughts, representation of opinionated position and counter-position, acceptance of position or facts and attack/defense of personality traits. Three major illocutionary acts: expressive, representative, and directive, were seen. Pragmatic resources such as inference, reference, relevance, metaphor and shared situational knowledge underlined. Expressive was achieved by condoning, criticising, condemning and praising. Representative was constructed by the forces of asserting, accusing, comparing and contrasting or juxtaposing. Directive was justified by defining, declaring, endorsing and analogising. The study concludes that endorsements and rebuttals are the performance ratings of political agents.

Abstract

Stunting is the inability of children under five to grow normally due to the effects of chronic lack of nutrition so that their height is very short for their age. Data from SSGI in 2022, Aceh Province has a prevalence rate of stunting among children under five which is ranked fifth with a percentage of 31.2 percent. According to SSGI data for 2021, stunting in West Aceh Regency was 27.4 percent and increased to 30.4 percent in 2022 with a very high category. The aim of this research is to analyze the relationship between parenting styles and the incidence of stunting in children 24-36 months in West Aceh Regency. This type of research is quantitative research with a case control design. The sample size was 100 toddlers, 50 toddlers were selected for the case group and 100 toddlers for the control group. The results of the study showed that the variables that were related were parenting patterns for breastfeeding and food (p=0.016), personal hygiene parenting patterns (p=0.028) and history of antenatal care visits (p=0.007) with the incidence of stunting. Suggestions for this research to the government are expected to be able to synergize better in creating programs to overcome stunting and poverty and improve the performance of services and implementation of specific nutritional intervention programs for pregnant women. One of them is an examination program during pregnancy both in terms of quantity of visits and also inspections carried out during ANC activities.

Abstract

Karmic discredit and law of Karma is a belief system in Hinduism and Buddhism. It is a force created by a person’s actions which to a degree determines what that person’s next life or his fate in the current life will be or look like. This belief is widely held on to that many people believe the cause of good or bad things that happens to a person has to do with karma. The catastrophic and astronomic fall of Professor Lucien N’Dyare from his lofty height and enviable academic pedestals is tagged to karmic discredit; not as a result of the damage done to Moremi but as a result of the sexual abuse done to Diatta, a promising young lady and daughter of Mr Cardosa who he deceived to bed with a failed offer of a scholarship which later haunted him to fall at Moremi’s feminist whims. The study adopts Hooks (2000) Feminist theory to interrogate illicit sex and karmic discredit in Kunle Afolayan’s Citation. As Hooks (2000) puts it, feminism is a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation and oppression. This is exactly what the protagonist in the movie Moremi Oluwa was designed to achieve. She was to liberate female students from the clog of male lecturers who demand sex for grades. Finding reveals that Professor Lucien N’Dyare in the movie made an effortless attempt to sexually harass Moremi Oluwa right in his office, and at a later time, made another attempt to rape her in his residence after he had successfully schemed out a party that lured Moremi Oluwa to his trapped chamber one evening.

Abstract

This study focuses on post-apartheid struggles and xenophobic attacks on non-South African Black nationals against the prior knowledge of racial discrimination between White and Black folks. Studies on post-apartheid struggles and xenophobic violence have widely been expressed via literature texts, neglecting the efficacy of stand-up comedy. Therefore, this study examines the efficacy of stand-up comedy in reconciliation and peace-building in post-apartheid struggles and xenophobic violence in South Africa. This study explores how comedians use empathetic narrative power of humour and performative techniques on-stage performance to foster unity, love, and peace among South African and non-South African nationals against killings, rape, violence, and deportation. Textual analysis of live recorded digital video of selected South African stand-up comedians and Schechner’s Performance and psychoanalytic theories of Freud and Jung were used to analyze the performance of the stand-up comedians and the success behind their outstanding popularity with their audiences.

Abstract

The closed hydrology and the geopolitical nature of the Helmand River basin in terms of leadership, management, and use of water resources have created serious threats to its integrity, environmental health, and human security in this river basin. The Helmand River basin, where about 8 million people live, includes about 49 percent of the soil and 11 percent of the water flow of this country. Agricultural sectors and related industries are the main drivers of the economy in this basin and due to the increasing need for food in the country and the region, the population shift towards cities, industrialization, and most importantly climate change and water shortage, competition between major water consumers in this basin is increasing. Despite the increasing number of studies on the water management of the Helmand River basin, no practical research carried out to strengthen and summarize the common conclusions and findings related to the fundamental problems facing the water resources management of this river basin. Therefore, in this article, to fill the aforementioned gap, all related documents, studies, and topics have been comprehensively reviewed and analyzed. To achieve this goal, the qualitative-analytical research method was used to analyze and find the key issues raised, and as a result, the basic problems facing the water resources management of this basin were investigated as much as possible. In the following, the necessary suggestions are also presented so that by implementing it, this country would be able to solve the existing problems by using its hydro political capacities and opportunities and it would also be placed at the center of the water interactions in the river basin, to provide a sustainable and all-round development of the country.
