Abstract

Indonesia has used a Qur’anic standard text as a reference for publishing the Qur’an since 1984. There are three kinds of standard texts in Indonesia: the Othmani Qur’anic standard text, the Bahriyah Qur’anic standard text, and the Braille Qur’anic standard text of Indonesia. This article seeks to renew readers’ acquaintance with the standard text following its two editions in 1983 and 2002. The Qur’anic standard text of Indonesia is based on Hafs from ‘Asim. Some distinct aspects of the text can be observed in the signs of reading, the completion of the rule for reading of the holy Qur’an (tajwid), and symbols such as sifir, isymām, imālah, tashīl, as well as other elements.

Abstract

Basically, the study of the Qur’an does not always focus on the text (or what is in the text), exegesis or research into its science and knowledge. The study can be extended to the fields of anthropology and sociology of religion in examing how people use the Qur'an in their daily lives. This is the so-called “living Qur'an” and the article seeks to introduce developments in mainstream Qur’anic research into the “living Qur'an”. This is a field which has not yet received sufficient attention in textual studies of the Qur’an. Studying the Qur’an within the context of the “living Qur'an” can present an interesting alternative approach for contemporary times.

Abstract

Generally, the  steps  for  liberating slaves in the Qur’an  are conducted in three gradual phases. The first step is the announcement of the liberation of the slaves, where the liberation of the slaves  is recommended and declared  to be a virtue that has its reward in the hereafter. The second step is the implementation phase, where the liberation of the slaves becomes sanctioned by law. The third step  is shutting off the roots of the slavery. At the time of the arrival of Islam, one of the sources of slavery was warfare. The moral message in the liberation of the slaves is Islam’s commitment to value the dignity of human beings as creatures of God.

Abstract

The leanings of az-Zamakhsyarī towards the Mu’tazili sect is clearly seen in his Qur’anic exegesis text called al-Kasysyāf. Many Islamic scholars have already identified and demonstrated the Mu’tazili sectarian tendencies of az-Zamakhsyarī. He used his expertise in the field of literature in order to present an interpretation of the Qur’an as supporting his sect’s viewpoint. However, this article will explore a different approach to demonstrate an other side of az-Zamakhsyarī. The writer will trace his interpretation in exegesis, particularly on the verses dealing with the concept of torture in the graveyard, to reveal the Sunnite side of az-Zamakhsyarī

Abstract

One of the causes for stagnation of thought experienced by Muslim society at the present time is the difficulty faced in the ongoing dialogue between the reality of religious texts and the reality of contemporary life. This is the reason present-day Muslim scholars are more deeply reflecting on the works of classical Muslim scholars inherited from the at-turāṡ. At the same time in the Western world there has emerged a method, known as hermeneutics, used for understanding scriptural texts. This theoretical approach has attracted much interest from contemporary Muslim scholars who are seeking to apply its method to understanding Islamic classical works (at-turāṡ). The article introduces two figures, namely Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd and Muhammed Arkoun, who having attracted much attention from scholars
