Abstract

The aim of this study is how to improve the students skills to make descriptive written review using Contextual Teaching and Learning ( CTL ) instructional method, by utilizing animal pictures as a learning tool. Research design was a Classroom Action Research ( CAR). Research subject was Class II.C sttudents SDN 82 Kota Bengkulu (28 students). Research results indicates an increase of students ability to make descriptive writing. Improvement of learning achievement seen from the increased of the students ability after learning treatment. Before learning treatment, just 28.57% of students ( 8 of 28 students ); and after the first cycle increased to 50 % of students ( 14 of 28 students ) ; and after the third cycle increased by 85.71 % of students ( 24 of 28 students ) which passed the assessment indicators are set

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mendeskripsikan kecenderungan pemilihan bahasa yang digunakan oleh kalangan terpelajar.. Metode penelitian yang dipakai, yaitu metode deskriptif. Populasi dari penelitian ini adalah semua dosen JPBS FKIP Universitas Bengkulu, teknik pengambilan sampel yang digunakan adalah teknik purposive sampling, jumlah sampel sebanyak 20 orang. Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan kuesioner dan dianalisis secara deskriptif dengan menggunakan persentase. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kecenderungan pemilihan bahasa kalanagan terpelajar adalah bahasa Indonesia baik dalam  situasi formal maupun situasi informal.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to describe the internal conflict in the novel Rembulan Tenggelam di Wajahmu by Tere Liye. The study adapted the descriptive research design. The approach used in this study was literature psychology. The data were in the form of texts. The source of the data used in this study was the novel of Rembulan Tenggelam di Wajahmu. The data were collected by reading, comprehending, and note-taking. It was then analyzed by data reduction, data categorization, drawing conclusion and writing report. The result of this study shows that there are two factors that cause the internal conflict of main character (Rehan), they were: personal factor and situational factor. Personal factor consists of biological and socio-psychological factors. While the situational factor consists of ecology factor, design and architecture factor, condition-behavior factor, and psychosocial factor. As the result of the internal conflict experienced by Rehan are frustration, disappointment, agony, and anger. While the mechanism of ego-defense exercised by Rehan are repression, denial, reaction formation, movement, rationalization, and regression.

Abstract

The first main assignment required in the first six weeks of Writing II class was designed on the expressivist approach. The article provides an actual class realization when the assignment was given to a group of forty English Study Programme students, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Bengkulu. Those six weeks were a mixture of hard work, complaint, excitement, and actual texts produced. An overview of the theoretical basis on which the assignment was built is provided followed by a quick account of how the class was conducted employing expressivist pedagogy. At the end of the sixth week, students were asked to write a one-page journal entry to reflect on and evaluate their writing experience. The article tries to analyze this journal entry to uncover what students learned from doing the assignment and how they evaluated their learning. Analysis reveals that students achieved first hand knowledge of the writing process and the requirements needed to develop readable effective texts.

Abstract

This research aimed at finding out the semantic and social context of invective expressions in Bengkulu Malay Language. The data was taken from four families in Bengkulu Malay society by using observation, interview, and field notes techniques. The result shows that there are thirty invective expressions in Bengkulu Malay Language which are grouped into four categories: parts of body, intellectuality, disease, and behavior category. Contextually, invective expressions belong to negative semantic. Textually, those expressions belong to neutral semantic. It is due to the associations which encompass the expressions. Based on social context, there are some factors need to be considered in speech. They are: 1) kinship, superior-inferior, and social aloofness; 2) emotional state of the speaker; and 3) the scene in which the speech take place, including the place, time, and the act.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to describe comprehensively the greetings variation in Bengkulu Malay Language. The problems include: a) greetings types, and b) the characteristics of variation levels in the usage. The method used was descriptive qualitative with naturalistic approach. The results show that based on the types, the use of greetings in Bengkulu Malay Language is divided into eleven types. They are: greeting as pronouns, proper name, kinship, designation, subject, possessive pronouns, demonstratives, alias, zero conditional, address, and expertise. While the characteristics of variation levels are divided into two: formal characteristics which are used to show respects, and informal characteristics which are used to show a close relationship.

Abstract

Literary teaching given previously was only theories and lack of involving students actively. Besides the limited material resources available at school and library, there are only textbooks. The application of analysis response approach can increase the literary teaching at schools and library. The objective of the research was to try to apply response analysis approach in either teaching literature or in dramas. It was hoped that this research can solve teachers’ problem in teaching literature. This research employed classroom action research procedures which covered four step: planning, action, observation and reflection. The results shows that application of the analysis response approach in drama subject can increase the ability of the third semester students of the Indonesian Language and Literary Education Study Program and it is able to raise students’ involvement in group work discussions.

Abstract

This research aimed at mapping the reading interest of the faculty of teacher training and education students. This profiling was considered important as the result can be used as the basis for the curriculum developers in improving students’ reading skill.  This research was conducted by using descriptive quantitative method. The location was at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education University of Bengkulu involving random sample. The data was collected by using a test and a survey. The result shows that: first, the reading interest of the students is categorized as low. Second, the students seldom make use of their time either for reading or visiting the library. Third, the most preferred books to read are popular books (politics, training, education, and motivation books), while scientific textbooks are less favored. Fourth, students only use less than one hour a day for reading.

Abstract

Teaching students strategies for answering questions is an important part of comprehension instruction. The failure of students in comprehending the text was caused of misunderstanding the questions and how it relates to the answer. QAR is a reading comprehension strategy applicable to use with both fiction and nonfiction texts. It is a valuable skill for all students to obtain, especially struggling readers. QAR assists students in relating prior knowledge to text information. It becomes a conscious process students actively engage in when reading texts, especially difficult reading selections. With this strategy, students become aware of the relationships between questions and answers. Students will begin to understand where the answers come from and thus are better able to answer the questions correctly. This paper reveals an alternative model for teaching reading comprehension using QAR strategy. Hopefully, it will be useful for English teachers who are training students to read and face the implementation of Curriculum 2013 at senior high schools.

Abstract

This study aimed at describing comprehensively the profile of Indonesian Language teachers in Bengkulu Province. The focus of the study were the educational background, school levels where the teachers currently teach, employment rank, gender, and age. Descriptive qualitative method was used in this research. From the data analysis, it is found that 98,97% of Indonesian Language teachers have bachelor degree; 65,64% of teachers teach in junior high school level; 34,96% of teachers are in Iva rank; 66,03% of teachers are female; and 89,76% of teachers are in the productive age (30-50 years-old).
