Abstract

This paper aims to identify the different types of language disorders that a man with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), especially Asperger Syndrome (AS), can experience. The information was in the form of phonemes, words, phrases, clauses, and sentences that he used in his everyday utterances as the leader of a local conservation group. The objective of this research is to classify different types of pragmatic impairment in AS characters and to clarify the pragmatic impairment that AS individuals face in his everyday life which conclude unresponsive, unbalanced, mismatched, lack of control and lack of playfulness based on the research problems. Academically, this analysis is intended to make substantial contributions to the fields of psycholinguistics and pragmatics. It's relevant to the psycholinguistics perspective because it's about the disability. It is a practical guide that professionals, lecturers, students, physicians, language pathologists, therapists, and readers from a variety of fields can use.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to apply an effective learning model in increasing the ability to appreciate literature while at the same time increasing the interest and ability of the students of SMP Negeri 14 Binjai towards literary works. The research conducted was Classroom Action Research (CAR) with the research subject of 25 grade IX students of SMP Negeri 14 Binjai in the 2020/2021 academic year. The object of this research is the ability of students to rewrite the contents of the story (rewrite), retell the story (retell), and conclude the moral message as well as relate it to student life (reflection). The learning process to appreciate literature is carried out in two cycles through four stages, namely: the action planning stage, the action implementation stage, the observation stage, and the analysis and reflection stage. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the students' ability to appreciate literature increases, this is indicated by the increase in the results of the three tests (rewrite, retell, reflection) of students at the end of each cycle. The average value of students' appreciation of literature has increased in each cycle, namely: 1) in the initial survey as many as 7 students (28%) of the total students who achieved a complete score, with an overall average score of 62.76; 2) in the first cycle, 15 students (60%) achieved a complete score, with an average overall score of 66.88; 3) in the second cycle there was a drastic increase in student mastery, namely a total of 25 students (100%) achieving a complete score with an average value of 78.8.

Abstract

The purposes of this study are to investigate the substantial difference in public speaking abilities between students with a natural science and social science background in their high school, and to investigate the students’ point of view related to this issue. This study is a case study approach that is naturally qualitative, which involved 163 students of English Education Study Program, at one state university on North Sumatera province. Semi-structured techniques were used for data collection. The data collected in this study then were inspected out by using two methods; statistical count for quantitative data related to students’ senior high school educational background, and particular substances analysis for qualitative data related to students’ performance in their public speaking. Questionnaire and interview were conducted to assemble the data related to students’ experiences and involvements in taking the public speaking subject and its practice based on their educational background in senior high school, and to collect the students’ opinion related to this difference. The analysis resulted that natural science students in average achieve score 3.58, meanwhile social science students in average achieve score 3.51. The difference is 0.07 point or 1.4%. The average score between the students in natural science and social science can be stated as not significantly different. In addition, generally, all the students who were interviewed believed that public speaking competency is not correlated with majoring in senior high school.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to investigate the classroom managements based on curriculum 2013 applied by the English teachers of SMP Negeri 9 Kota Bengkulu in the academic years 2021/2022. The subjects consisted of three English teachers that were; teacher A (Female), teacher B (Female), and teacher C (Male). This research utilized descriptive qualitative method. The data were obtained by the observation checklist and interview guideline. The results of this study displayed those three English teachers applied 10 of 10 the components of classroom management curriculum 2013, but the teachers did not apply all the features. Teacher A dominantly used 3 of 10 components there were; 1) Teacher Feedback, 2) Teacher Wardrobe and 3) Adjusting the Material with The Students’ Learning Ability, with the total of all component’s percentage 73.4%. Teacher B also dominantly used 3 of 10 components such as; 1) Teacher Voice, 2) Time Management and 3) Teacher Wardrobe, with the total of all component’s percentage 73.4%. In contrast, teacher C dominantly applied 4 of 10 components there were; 1) Teacher Feedback, 2) Students’ Talking Time, 3) Teacher Wardrobe and 4) Adjusting the Material with The Students’ Learning ability, with the total of all component’s percentage 80%. In conclusion, three English teachers applied all the components of classroom management, but they did not apply all the features.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the types and meanings of lexemic idiomatic expressions in the Eaternal Nocturnal webtoon. This research used a qualitative method. The object of this research is the script of dialogues and narrations of the characters in Eaternal Nocturnal webtoon, namely episode two to episode six. The researcher used data sheets and tables as instruments. The researcher identified and categorized each expression based on Makkai's theory (1972) and using three dictionaries related to idioms, namely Farlex Dictionary of Idioms, Dictionary of American Idioms by McGraw-Hill's, and NCT's American Idioms Dictionary, then matched the meanings of lexemic idiomatic expressions from the dictionaries with the co-text contained in the dialogues or narrations of the characters to analyze the data. The results showed that there were six types of lexemic idiomatic expressions in the Eaternal Nocturnal webtoon, namely Phrasal Verb idioms, Tournure idioms, Irreversible Binomial idioms, Phrasal Compound idioms, Incorporating Verb idioms, and Pseudo idioms. In determining the meaning must be based on the co-text because an idiom contains many meanings. Keywords: Idiomatic, Lexemic Idiomatic Expressions, Webtoon
