Abstract

The purpose of this study was to apply an effective learning model in increasing the ability to appreciate literature while at the same time increasing the interest and ability of the students of SMP Negeri 14 Binjai towards literary works. The research conducted was Classroom Action Research (CAR) with the research subject of 25 grade IX students of SMP Negeri 14 Binjai in the 2020/2021 academic year. The object of this research is the ability of students to rewrite the contents of the story (rewrite), retell the story (retell), and conclude the moral message as well as relate it to student life (reflection). The learning process to appreciate literature is carried out in two cycles through four stages, namely: the action planning stage, the action implementation stage, the observation stage, and the analysis and reflection stage. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the students' ability to appreciate literature increases, this is indicated by the increase in the results of the three tests (rewrite, retell, reflection) of students at the end of each cycle. The average value of students' appreciation of literature has increased in each cycle, namely: 1) in the initial survey as many as 7 students (28%) of the total students who achieved a complete score, with an overall average score of 62.76; 2) in the first cycle, 15 students (60%) achieved a complete score, with an average overall score of 66.88; 3) in the second cycle there was a drastic increase in student mastery, namely a total of 25 students (100%) achieving a complete score with an average value of 78.8.

Abstract

Competency Based Education is very much needed in the era of the industrial revolution 5.0 and the determination of Toba Caldera as a UNESCO Global Geopark provides opportunities, encourages economic and sustainable development, requires skilled worker who has various competencies in a field of work. This competency improvement is also the outcomes of Independent Learning-Independent Campus. This research was the type of online survey tools associative research conducted factual information to obtain the truth. Online Survey Tools Research generally uses a google form as questionnaire instrument filled out by participants used certain methods. (Vasanta Raju 2018). Modified International Toastmaster model, testing and evaluating the model created by the Public Speaking training program involving 30 students of the English Literature Department Universitas Negeri Medan. The findings related to competence using the 10 Toastmaster International project speech delivery have shown at the pie chart (see figure 3.1 to 3.10). Modified International Toastmaster is associated with the six tasks models of Indonesian National Qualification Framework called KKNI to maximize the improvement of various competence in public speaking.

Abstract

This study focuses on the diction analysis found in Adimulia Hotel’s digital brochure. The aim of this study was to identify the main diction style used in digital brochure and to ascertain the figurative meaning associated with each word used within. The diction used in this study is based on Keraf  Theory (2009). Digital brochures are tools for valid data analysis. This study describes the predominant diction style and the definition of each word in the Adimulia Hotel’s digital brochure. The basis for the dominant usage of a term is its meaning, which sets it apart from other wods. The diction that used in digital brochure also influences reader’s interest in what the Adimulia hotel is promoting.

Abstract

This paper aims to analyse the various apology strategies used by the characters in the Luca movie script and describe their use through a pragmatic approach by referring to the theory of Klimczak and Pawlak (2014) and Fraser's theory (1981) to explain the factors that influenced the use of apology strategies by characters in Luca's film script. This study uses a descriptive qualitative research method with data obtained from the film script Luca. The results of this study indicate that there are 23 utterances featuring apologies made by 6 characters in Luca's story. The findings are grouped into a taxonomy of apology strategies, there are 9 types of apology strategies used by the characters in Luca's story. The 9 types of strategy include Illocutionary Force Indicating Device (an expression of regret) of 5 utterances, Illocutionary Force Indicating Device (a request for the forgiveness) of 1 utterance, Phatic Communication of 2 utterances, Acknowledgement of Responsibility (explicit self-blame) of 2 utterances, Internal Intensifiers (intensifying adverbials) with 2 utterances, Acknowledgement of Responsibility with 4 utterances of lack of intent, Acknowledgement of Responsibility (expression of embarrassment) with 4 utterances, Explanation or account of the situation with 2 utterances, and Acknowledgement of Responsibility (refusal to acknowledge guilt) with 1 utterance, which every utterance and strategy were influenced by 1-2 factors.

Abstract

The development of technology in the current era is advancing very rapidly. Along with digital learning materials, they can increase verbal communication and various visual, audio and motion texts. This study aims to develop students' 4C competencies (Creativity and Innovation, Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving, Communication and Collaboration) in 21st-century learning through creative entrepreneurship learning materials of the Telegram Chatbot Artificial Intelligence with Natural Language Processing (NLP) Method. The scope learning materials are focused on Personal Business Plans, Customer Interviews, Customer Observation, Selling Products, and being a Creative Entrepreneur, which will be uploaded to the Telegram Chatbot as e-learning students' material. This research will use the Research and Development approach of Borg and Gall (1983). The series of research and development steps are carried out in stages, and each action will be taken to the results of the previous step until a new development product of learning materials is finally obtained. Product development design of the preliminary stage needs analysis is carried out by collecting related data and developing Creative Entrepreneurship learning materials for the Telegram chatbot model. The Creative Entrepreneurship learning program will involve 50 students of the English Literature Department, Universitas Negeri Medan, to analyze the feedback from the questionnaire Google form.
