Abstract

This novel talks about a beautiful woman who is forced into prostitution at the end of the colonial period. She bears three daughters – all are beautiful and cause much strife so that when she becomes pregnant again, she prays for an ugly child. Her prayer is answered. The story follows the lives of her daughters and their children so the scope of this family story is wide. It is a fascinating story. On the other hand, it can be a curse not only to themselves but also to others as the characters in the novel. But there is more phenomenon found in the novel such as magic realism, superstition and the brutal daily lives of many people.

Abstract

This study deals with Javanese speaker’s attitude toward their speech levels in Desa Danau Sijabut. It aims at finding out what the characteristics of Javanese speaker’s attitude are when they use the dominant speech level, how the linguistic realizations of Javanese speaker’s attitude toward their speech levels is and why they have such attitudes toward their speech level like the way they do. This study was conducted in qualitative research of which design was descriptive a case study. The sources of data for this study were 20 Javanese speakers of second generation of migration who live in Desa Danau Sijabut; meanwhile the data were taken from the transcripts of Javanese utterances spoken during the Javanese speakers communicate in their daily life. The data were analyzed by using Interactive Model by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). To find out the characteristics of Javanese speaker’s attitude, the researcher used theory of Garvin & Mathiot (1968), to see the realizations of Javanese speech levels, the researcher used theory of Rahardi (2001), while to find out the reasons why the Javanese speakers have such attitudes like the way they do, besides used theory of Subroto (2014), researcher also asked the respondents more deeply. Based on the data analysis, the first finding shows that the characteristics of Javanese speaker’s attitude when they used the dominant speech level is language pride. In which they used Javanese language based on the speech levels in formal and informal situation to show their identity as Javanese. The second finding, it was found the Javanese speakers in Desa Danau Sijabut realized their attitudes in the several domains, such as: use Ngoko speech level at home, use Ngoko and Madya at neighborhood, used Ngoko and Indonesian language at work place. In this case, they were speak based on the relationship between speakers and participants. And as the third findings, it was found the Javanese speakers in Desa Danau Sijabut have such attitudes toward the Javanese speech levels because of some reasons. Firstly, they use Ngoko to make communication clearly and easier to understand what their partner said during they have a communication. Secondly, they use Madya when to talk a secret one to their speaker partner without afraid will be known by another people of what they are talking about. Besides, those become their habit in using speech level and aware to the rules of Javanese speech levels.

Abstract

This research deals with the ability of the second-semester students of Public Administration in Academic Year 2019/2020 on Learning English by applying Google Classroom. This research applied Google Classroom during pandemic Covid 19. It was conducted at Universitas Timor, Nusa Tenggara Timur. This research applied a qualitative descriptive method that describes the students of the public administration’s ability on learning English about Basic English Grammar. The population of this research was the second-semester students of the Public Administration of Universitas Timor.  There were six classes of the second-semester public administration students who took English subjects. The sample was taken by applying cluster sampling and the students from class A were chosen as the sample.  The result shows that the students’ ability on learning English is at a good level even though the student should learn English from home by applying Google Classroom during pandemic Covid-19.

Abstract

This qualitative research investigated the discursive struggle utterance in the discussion of Mata Najwa Program. This focused on finding out what kinds of discursive struggle. In conducting this research, having copy the video of Mata Najwa from website, utterance are transcribed, identified, and then analyzed according to Murni’s five strategies (2013: 59) to identify and to interpret the power of speech of Angel Lelga's utterances as a data. For findings, there were five struggles over value of Linguistic Politeness, namely: 5 utterances of Claiming common ground, 4 utterances of bringing forward accurate arguments and data, 3 utterances of minimizing imposition, 3 utterances of asserting reciprocity and 2 utterances of minimizing conflict and confrontation.

Abstract

The researcher selected this song as subject of analysis because the popularity of the song and also it consisted of such as deictic words and reference meaning. Therefore, the Salam Alaikum song lyrics can be analyzed using pragmatics approach. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data which used song lyrics of Harris J’s Salam Alaikum (2015). In addition, this song was classified into three types of deixis analysis based on their own criteria. The result of this research showed that the three types of deixis, there are person deixis, spatial deixis and temporal deixis are used in the Salam Album song lyrics of Harris J. The use of personal deixis indicated the participant in this song. While, the spatial deixis indicated location and place of event from the participant. Moreover, the temporal deixis indicated the timing of speech event which is used in this song.In addition, the most dominant deixis is person deixis. Because, it tells about the moral value, speakers’ experiences and feelings in his religious life.
