Abstract

Globalization have made intercultural competencies crucial for working and interacting effectively with people from diverse nationality, ethnics, and racial groups. Thus, this study tends to examine the predictors of cultural intelligence among international students and to propose strategies that could help international students to better adjust themselves while studying in Malaysia. A quantitative research approach was used in this study. Questionnaires were distributed and a sample size of the study collected consisted of 194 international students. Structural Equation Model using SMARTPLS was implemented to achieve the objectives of this study. The findings found that “Openness to Experience” personality trait, mainstream social connectedness, cultural exposure, and cross-cultural training were found to be positively related to cultural intelligence. Furthermore, cultural intelligence was found to have a positive significant relationship with cross-cultural adjustment. These findings underline the importance of predictors and cultural intelligence in understanding successful international students’ cross-cultural adjustments. The study also examines cultural intelligence in a multiple loci of intelligences framework, which consists of capabilities such as motivational, mental and behavioral aspects. This study has contributed to the area of cultural intelligence and cross-cultural adjustments by providing suggestions to industry players such as the Higher Education Institution, government agencies and managers in enhancing cultural intelligence of international students or expatriates.

Abstract

Bogor Regency is one of the areas that has a large enough rice seed business potential that can support the Seed Independent Village program. However, the availability of seeds needs to be supported by the resources and competence of the farmers around them, so they do not depend on other areas as seed producers. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between farmer characteristics socioeconomics and the competency level of rice seed producers in Bogor Regency, West Java. This study used a survey method of 59 rice seed producers who were scattered in three sub-districts of Bogor Regency which were determined by stratified random sampling. The variables observed were farmer socioeconomics characteristics, management competence aspects and technical aspects of production. The data analysis used descriptive statistical analysis and the rank spearman inferencing statistics. The results showed that the competence level of rice seed producers from the management aspect was categorized quite high, while the competency level from the technical aspect was 71.4% in the low category. The factors that have a relationship with the competence of rice seed producers are length of business, land area, motivation, production, income, counseling and access to capital

Abstract

Tourism is seen as a fast and booming industry in this age and is being conducted for a variety of purposes. Notably, the world medical tourism market has grown rapidly over the past decade and is expected to grow at an exponential rate, where one of the clear goals of geriatric medicine is to ensure that older people receive better healthcare, specifically, for high-quality patient care. This study identifies the Stimulus Organism Response (SOR) with the injecting of the Donabedian theory that influences the satisfaction of international, domestic, as well as foreign geriatric patient-tourists. Based on the Stimulus Organism Response (SOR) framework and the injecting of the Donabedian theory (2005) with the application of the non-probability sampling techniques that was used, an online questionnaire had been distributed among selected hospitals in the Klang Valley. Accordingly, the Smart PLS 3.3.2 was used to analyse the data for this study using the (SEM) approach, and from the online questionnaire that had been distributed, 139 data were used for further analysis. The findings showed that all the hypotheses (H1-H3) were supported. The expectation has positive effects leaning towards the confirmation and geriatric patient satisfaction; the confirmation is a mediator between expectation and the geriatric patient-tourist satisfactic.

Abstract

The discussion about women's access to and use of ICTs in developing countries has been an unsettled issue. Some schools of thought claim that due to engagement with household chores, traditional social norms, and values, women are less interested in ICTs, while others argue that like other social products, technology is not gender-neutral. However, this research conducted an empirical study on the self-employed women in rural areas of the Chittagong District of Bangladesh. A mixed-method was applied to analyze the collected data. The study tries to explore the impact of mobile phones and mobile internet on rural women’s income generation activities; and how gender relation at the household level has been transforming due to access to mobile phones. The findings reveal that having access to mobile phones, rural self-employed women are performing better than women who have no access to mobile phones and mobile internet. From both social and economic perspectives, the uses of mobile phones assist rural women to take part in decision-making, awareness build-up, increase movement, and control over income. However, strong patriarchal norms and traditional cultural constraints sometimes create barriers in access to mobile phones for rural women. Notwithstanding, the study depicts that ensuring gender-sensitive ICT policy and social awareness activities might lessen the barriers of women’s access to mobile phones and the internet in the periphery areas. However, this research puts these issues to an empirical test.
