Abstract

This article aims at describing the rationale and principles of designing English teaching materials for teachers of non-English subjects. Those teachers use English as a medium of instruction. English is used to teach the subjects. To improve the teachers’ English skills, the school provided an English course. However, the teaching materials for those specific learners were not available. Therefore, designing materials is needed to precisely fulfil their needs of English in the target professional workplace. A needs analysis was conducted to gather information using questionnaires distributed to the non-English subject teachers as the learners. The data from the questionnaire were analysed qualitatively by interpreting and categorising in themes. Using the needs analysis result, a syllabus was then designed as the guidelines for developing the materials. This paper reports how the needs analysis process is employed to design a set of English teaching materials for nonEnglish subject teachers. The discussion highlighted the present situation, the target situation, the principles of designing English materials. The overview of the designed materials for teachers of non-English subjects was then presented.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to show how scaffolding from teacher to students and that from students to students work during a sequence of language learning in which communication skills and fluency are the goals to reach. Pedagogical sequence that includes the roles of teacher in facilitating students involved in various types of learning activity and tasks has been analysed to find educational implications of the theories. Based on the data of some empirical studies, it shows that the strategy used by teacher to facilitate the activities and give corrective feedbacks is very helpful to make students focus on the goals. This is how scaffolding from teacher works efficiently in classroom learning. Pair and group work interactions among students with different characteristics also prove how scaffolding from students to students are present and contributes to the communication skills development. However, not all students can provide useful scaffolding for others due to their different personality. In conclusion, the teacher’s scaffolding and students’ scaffolding occur in different patterns (Storch 2002: 119-158). Teacher’s scaffolding comes in a various range of support, while student’s scaffolding might be helpful, but not as significantly as that of the teacher.

Abstract

Grammar has always been an important element of linguistic competence to be mastered in EFL contexts. The ways to teach and to make learners use grammar correctly have been the goals in grammar classes. This paper reports a study aimed at finding out if a grammar learning strategy called Digital Mind-Mapping (DMM) can improve learners’ grammar. The study was conducted in Universitas Nasional Karangturi Semarang involving first-semester students taking Words and Phrase Grammar (WPG) class. In the study, the researcher tried to discover the feasibility of DMM to be applied in grammar teaching and learning process since it involves the use of different platforms such as Instragram and WhatsApp in the learning processes. The study used a quantitative approach. The data were in the forms of students’ scores. They were collected by doing pre-test and post-test. Data analysis was carried out by using t-test. The findings show that DMM seems to have great potential to be used in grammar classes since it helps improve the students’ grammar. Keywords: Grammar, Mind-Map, Digital Mind-Mapping

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to discuss how the metaphor of scaffolding is realised through the use of feedback in an ESL class in the US. In doing the analysis, I look at three types of feedback (self-feedback, peer feedback, and teacher feedback) and how each type help to shape the learning process in the learning context which is discussed. A number of experimental researches indicate that L2 learners would benefit from corrective feedback -regardless of the type of the feedback (Alfaajreh and Lantolf, 1994; Caroll and Swain, 1992). In the same vein, from this learning context, it can be concluded that each type of feedback can potentially serve as a mediation tool to scaffold students’ learning process.

Abstract

The digital technology has equipped people especially the students with applications needed for online learning in the form of applications. However, these applications will be useless if the online learning concept is not applied in the correct way. This research is aimed to describe qualitatively the instructional design of teaching reading online in a small class which consists of 5 students. The method of the research is qualitative research. The data collected by observing the process of learning and documenting the process. The result found that the small numbers of students is the most important aspect to make the instructional design effective. All the students were active in the online learning. The online media used were Google Meet and WhatApps Group (WAG). The Google meet was the substitution of classroom and WAG was the medium to sending the materials. The highest score for the progress test was 92 and the lowest was 78. The score indicates that the instructional design for teaching reading online in the small class is effective.
