Abstract

The variability of temperature, salinity and rainfall in the Indonesian region is strongly influenced by the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon so that this study aims to describe the characteristics of the ENSO phenomenon, compare and analyze the characteristics of temperature, salinity and rainfall under normal conditions and changes due to the ENSO phenomenon in the Madura Strait. This study used a descriptive method by collecting data using secondary data and making a description of the observed phenomenon. Data required for 12 years from 2010-2021. The results showed that the variability of temperature measured during the 2010-2021 period showed the highest temperature values were in the closed waters of the Madura Strait with an average of 28.64°C and the lowest were in the central waters with an average value of 28.59°C. The highest rainfall value is in closed waters with an average of 6.06 mm and the lowest is in central waters with an average value of 5.562 mm. The highest salinity is in open water with an average value of 32.06 ppt while the lowest salinity is in closed water with an average of 31.42 ppt. The highest temperature and rainfall are generally found when the La Niña phenomenon is taking place, while the lowestntemperature and rainfall are found during the El Niño phenomenon. The highest salinity is generally found during the El Niño phenomenon, while the lowest salinity occurs during the La Niña phenomenon.

Abstract

One of the habits of the people that are difficult to get rid of is throwing garbage. The trash the community throws away will be exposed to seawater during high tide and spread widely. Plastic waste stuck in mangroves can also block the sunlight that mangroves need to grow even though the functions of mangroves are essential, such as preventing erosion, and abrasion, shelter for some biota, and many more. Based on this background, researchers wanted to know the effect of plastic waste on the abundance of mangrove seedlings. This study aimed to determine the effect of plastic waste cover on the growth of mangrove seedlings and the impact of plastic waste on the abundance of mangrove seedlings in Tambak Wedi Surabaya. The method used was sampling vegetation on a transect measuring 2x2 m for seedlings, 5x5 m for saplings, and 10x10 m for trees at different locations and calculating the area covered by plastic waste at each station. From the observations, data obtained at each station showed that the plastic waste covering the mangrove area, the amount of plastic waste at each station was 139.4 – 144.6 m2, the density of mangroves at three stations was 14,700 ind/ha, and for the average density of seedlings at each station of 26,666 ind/ha. When viewed from the standard criteria for mangrove damage, the density of mangrove seedlings in the Wedi Pond area is quite good.

Abstract

Mangrove litter has a very important function for the mangrove ecosystem, including to maintain the fertility of the forest soil in question. This study aims to determine the production and rate of decomposition in the Gununganyar Mangrove Tourism Area. The study was conducted by installing a litter net or litter-trap as a container for fallen mangrove leaves, this was done to determine the productivity of mangrove leaf litter, litter collection on the litter-trap was carried out for 1 month and was taken at 30-day intervals and installed a litter-bag for placing mangrove leaf litter. The litter production at Station 1, Station 2 and Station 3 was 194.976 kg/ha/month, 681.84 kg/ha/month, 925.275 kg/ha/month. The results of the litter decomposition rate in the Gununganyar Mangrove Tourism Area from Station 1, Station 2, and Station 3 were 97.95%, 60.35% and 89.25%, respectively.

Abstract

Salinity and Sea Surface Temperature (SST) are important parameters in oceanographic and climate studies. The value of salinity at sea level is caused by precipitation and evaporation of fresh water and is influenced by the entry of fresh water into sea waters. In addition, physical parameters such as wind, ocean currents, and rainfall can also affect horizontal salinity values. Several factors that affect SST are: depth, intensity of sunlight, precipitation and evaporation, as well as wind and air circulation. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of seasonal wind and current patterns on salinity and SST in the Madura Strait. The period studied was from 2010 to 2020 with the main parameters analyzed were salinity, SST, wind and currents as well as rainfall and river flows that emptied into the waters as supporting parameters. The results of this study showed that the minimum average salinity value occurred in the transition season at the beginning of the year with a value of 31.8 0/00 and the highest value of 32.77 0/00 occurred in the transition season at the end of the year. And for the lowest average SPL value occurred in the east monsoon season with a value of 28.38 oC and the highest SPL value of 30.17 oC which occurred in the transition season at the beginning of the year.

Abstract

Coral reefs are a habitat for more than 300 types of coral, 200 species of fish, and various other invertebrates such as molluscs, crustaceans, sponges, algae, and other biotas. Sea anemones are sea animals from the Anthozoa taxonomic class, which are flower-shaped. Clownfish have an attractiveness with its the color which has a basic color pattern with a combination: red - white, red - black and black - yellow - white. The purpose of this research is to analyze the condition of the corals and the abundance of clownfish on Gili Labak Island, Sumenep. This research was conducted in October 2021 on Gili Labak Island, Sumenep. The method used to collect data on the condition of coral reefs is using a belt transect with a length of 50 m parallel to the shoreline to collect data on the abundance of clownfish using the UVC (underwater visual census) method and to collect data on brightness, salinity, temperature and current velocity using in situ data (direct). The results obtained from this research is the relationship between coral reef conditions and clownfish, namely a positive correlation with a coefficient of determination (R²) = 0.8048. The relationship between coral reef conditions and sea anemone abundance is a negative correlation with the coefficient of determination (R²) = 0.2049.
