Abstract

This research aims to find out the types of address terms found in the Love Rosie movie and to find out how the address terms are translated into Bahasa Indonesia. In collecting the data in this research, the researcher used the descriptive qualitative method. The data collected in this research were from the data sources which are the Love Rosie movie and the movie manuscript. The types of the address terms theories by Wardhaugh (2006: 271), Simatupang (2000: 77), and Larson (1984: 121), and the translation procedures theory by Vinay and Dalbernet (2000: 84-93) were used in analyzing the data in this research. This research used data analysis techniques by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). There were 65 data collected in this research. The findings of this research showed two main points. (1) There were 5 types of address; 6 data of pronouns, 17 data of kinship, 10 data of titles, 22 data of names, and 10 data of endearments. (2) There were six translation procedures applied in translating the address terms; 19 data translated by applying literal translation, 17 data by applying borrowing, 13 data by applying transposition, 1 data by applying modulation, 1 data by applying equivalence, and 14 data by applying adaption. Based on the data analysis and the findings, it can be concluded that the types of address terms found in the Love Rosie movie are in the form of pronouns, kinship, titles, names, and endearments. There are 6 address terms in the form of pronouns, 17 address terms in the form of kinship, 10 address terms in the form of titles, 22 address terms in the form of names, and 10 address terms in the form of endearments. Then, the translation procedures applied by the translator in translating the address terms in Love Rosie movie are using Vinay and Dalbernet’s (2000: 84-93) theory which are literal translation, borrowing, transposition, calque, modulation, equivalence, and adaptation. There are 18 address terms are translated by applying literal translation which is the most commonly used procedure by the translator, 17 address terms by applying borrowing, 12 address terms by applying transposition, 1 address term by applying modulation, 1 address term by applying equivalence, and 16 address terms by applying adaptation.

Abstract

This experimental study assessed the effectiveness of using paragraph analysis in teaching grammar, especially in improving students’ knowledge and comprehension. In implementing this strategy students were asked to analyze every sentences in a paragraph where in every paragraph has misused of tenses and verb. During the process, the class activity mostly was in form of discussion. First activity was reading the text. Then, the students were asked to identify the tense of every sentences in the paragraph and analyzed whether or not there was a mistake in every sentences. The next step was students discuss in a group and reconstructed the inappropriate sentences. Before giving treatment to the students, they were given initial test. Then, at the end of the research the students were given final test. Both of the result of the tests were calculated by using t-test. Level of significant applied is 95% or 0.005. The calculation result was 0.004 which means there was a significant difference before implementing paragraph analysis and after the treatment.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the grammatical problems found in students’ argumentative essays. The type of research used was descriptive research and the data source of this research was argumentative essays written by English Department students. Research data were collected by giving writing assignments and coding sheets. The collected data were grouped based on the research objectives, then described and analyzed to get the actual facts. The research findings showed that some of the grammatical problems that were often faced by students in writing argumentative essays were subject-predicate compatibility, verb forms, verb tenses, plural forms, and word formation errors as well as problems in the use of conjunctions, auxiliary modals and the use of personal subjects. In conclusion, the students still do not understand the concept of grammar well, and it will be difficult for them to produce a good argumentative essay.

Abstract

The research was a kind of correlational study which had objective to determine the association of grammar mastery and writing achivement in making prediction how much the correlation among the variables quantitatively. Population of the study was the fourth semester students of AMIK Mitra Gama registered on 2019/2020 academic year totally 126 students, 30 students was the sample of this research taken by cluster sampling technique. Test of grammar and writing adapted from Cambridge Preparation TOEFL was the instrumentation. Data analyzed by using correlation Pearson Product Moment (r-test). The result of the study found that robserved (0,92) is higher than rtable (0,362) on 0,05 significance level. In addition, hypothesis testing resulted that H1 (there is a correlation between grammar mastery and writing achievement) is accepted, but H0 (there is no correlation between gammar mastery and writing achievement of the TOEFL) is rejected. In sum, there was a significant correlation between mastery of grammar and writing achievement for the fourth semester students of AMIK Mitra Gama. From the result of the research, grammar and writing should be stated on lesson plans of English 1, 2 and 3 course and taught more intensive since those skills also support student’s achievement to administer TOEFL.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out students’ perception about E-learning in English Subject to the Tenth Grade Students’ Madrasah Aliyah Darun Najah Bangun Jaya and to find out strengths and weaknesses in using E-learning faced by the Tenth Grade Students’ Madrasah Aliyah Darun Najah Bangun Jaya. This study used a mix method by using questionnaires and open-ended questionnaires. The researchers used total sampling and the sample was 69 students. The data were collected through an online questionnaire distributed through Google Form and WhatsApp application. For analyzing the data, the researchers used a percentage analysis formula. Based on the result of the questionnaire, 36 students or 52.2% had negative perception of E-learning in English subjects, 31 students or 44.9% had positive perception and 2 students or 2.8% had neutral perception. It could be concluded that the Tenth Grade Student of Madrasah Aliyah Darun Najah Bangun Jaya has negative perception on E-learning in English subject. The result of the open-end questionnaire found that the strength in using the WhatsApp application is that it is easier to submit the assignment. E-learning can eliminate hesitation / unconfidence to practice English, and interaction and communication between teacher and students better. The weakness in using E-learning was students are difficult to understand the material given. They faced limited internet access and the time was not flexible, so that learning activities became ineffective.
