Abstract

Fertility experiences stagnation during the last 10 years (2.6 children) and it did not reach the target of national medium-term development plan 2015 for 2.1 children. Meanwhile, the use of contraception increased less than one percent, and mortality rate of children under five years old only slightly declined. This might be because Population and Family Planning Program is not a priority. This paper aims to analyze direct and/or indirect factors that significantly cotribute to children born alive based on IDHS 2012. The IDHS 2012 data collect 45.607 women aged 15-49 years as sample units. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics for univariate, bivariate (chi-square), and multivariate (multiple linear regression). Twenty-four variables have a significant relationship to the children born alive, eleven of the variables have strong effect to the children born alive. By taking into account control variables, the eleven variables contribute 66 per cent to children born alive. Child mortality is the most dominant variable that contributes to a children born alive This is in line with the theory of Alberto that said child mortality trigger to have more children. The results also explain that stagnation of fertility can not be separated from slow rate of mortality. Recommendations that developed by this analysis include the strengthening of communication, education, information, especially delayed age at first marriage, age at first birth and age at first sexual intercourse for young women, the lowest wealth quintile, low education through  The Information Center of Adolescent Reproductive Health Councelling; b). Partnership with the Ministry of Health, especially strengthening education and information communication and quality of services mother and child care program concerning the high contribution of child mortality to the children ever born.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze factors that influence children poverty in West Sumatera Province based on household and parents characteristics. To address this issue, the 2013 National Socioeconomic Survey was derived from the Indonesian Statistics Agency and analyzed using logistic regression. Research results showed factors that significantly affected the probability of children fall into absolute poverty are low education level of parents, mother and head of household’s employment status, location of residences in villages, and having more than one child. Policies on poverty alleviation have been implemented by the government. However, a more comprehensive effort particularly for family with children under-five needs to be taken into account.

Abstract

Water is vital for human and thus it has to be made available for our life. Many communities in Indonesia, with their local knowledge, customs, and culture that are passed from generations, utilize water resources in their areas to meet daily needs. They manage the resources and live in harmony with the surrounding nature. The wisdom of community on water resource management, unfortunately, has experienced a shift.  Water has then become an important issue that requires significant attention.  This paper discusses shift in the value of local wisdom on water resources. Data and information in this paper is based on desk reviews from research/assessment results, books, documents and the author’s field experiences in implementing relevant researches. The discussion focuses on the waning of local knowledge and wisdom as social capital in the provision of community water supply and as a form of their protection against water resources, such as the erosion of togetherness and mutual cooperation among members of the community, change in the value of water from social good to commercialization, the waning of local and traditional institutions, and the community’s sense of belonging to their common property resources. This paper also analyze the shift of local wisdom’s role in maintaining balance and harmony between the communities and their surrounding environment, and challenges to the existence of local wisdom associated with population pressures, modernization and development activities with less attention to the preservation of water resources and environment.

Abstract

Education is an important factor in human resource investment. Education is also expected to increase income as well as decrease income inequality among workers. This paper analyzes returns to education in Indonesia. By processing the National Labor Force Survey data from six regions in Indonesia in 2013, we suggest a robust stylised fact: returns to education are higher for the more skilled individuals (workers who have high schooling). In other words, education can reduce income inequality. Income inequality occures because of over-education, ability–schooling interactions and school quality or different fields of study. Based on gender, returns to education for men is lower than for women. Education can reduce gender based income gap. Therefore, government can increase investment in education sector to reduce income inequality, including gender based income gap.

Abstract

This article reviews some corruption cases that are associated with natural resources management, especially in accessing and utilizing common property resources in Indonesia. It attempts to extract lessons from regulations and actions that have emerged in all levels and across many sectors. This article develops social-ecological systems (SES) framework to deliver a clear roadmap for incorporating more ecological or natural characteristics into studies that explores linkage social and legal systems. The framework therefore considers how problems are defined and how action and policy are formulated to deal with these problems. This article provides an in-depth investigation in Pasaman district. The data is gathered by interviewing local people who live around palm plantations in West Pasaman. Corruption in the context of managing common property resources brings many disadvantages to community and State because it will lead to the scarcity of resources. Overall, eradicating corruption is not only on the hands of community or private sectors, but also needs active involvement from government and policy-makers as the main stakeholders.

Abstract

To increase the numbers of entrepreneurs in Indonesia, the existence of small-scale apparel businesses in the township Bulak Timur, Depok becomes fascinating, as they naturally emerge and evolve, as well as face various problems with their abilities. However, lately, there are some concerns about whether they would be able to survive. Therefore, this article aims to identify the characteristics of small-scale apparel entrepreneurs in Bulak Timur, Depok City to understand their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges that they experience. The results would then be formulated as strategies and conveyed to both business players and government. Respondents were selected using a simple random sampling by the number of 32 entrepreneurs (25% of the population). Primary data were collected using a survey method through face-to-face interview techniques, with the help of questionnaires and in-depth interview based on interview guidelines. Data collected was processed and analyzed by using descriptive statistics. The results of this study concluded that apparel entrepreneurs in Depok still have many weaknesses rather than strengths, which led to a lower value of their entrepreneurial characteristics. In addition, there are still many barriers faced in the development of entrepreneurship in Depok, including government policies and program that were not optimal. Further efforts must be made to grow small-scale businesses with high-value entrepreneurial characteristics in Depok. First, small-scale entrepreneurs should strive to build and enhance their entrepreneurial characteristics. They must also understand and implement survival management. Second, Depok City Government should provide support among other things by increasing business incubator and training on business management, including survival management; draw up a blueprint of small-scale businesses to prevent unfair competition, which can also be used as material to develop technopreneurship.
