Abstract

Speaking skill is one of the most important skills in learning a language. This skill requires language learners to produce utterances or utterances through speech media. When someone studies a language, it is very necessary to be able to practice the pronunciation of that language so that they are able to produce a good language. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the factors that influence students' fear in practicing English conversation in front of the class when carrying out English learning. The method used in this research is qualitative by using a descriptive approach. The sample in this study were 36 students who were learning English. Data was obtained through observation and interviews to find out in-depth perceptions and opinions about the factors that make students feel afraid when carrying out conversational practice in front of the class. After the data is collected, the data is analyzed through three stages, namely data reduction, data display and conlusion. The research results show that there are two factors; internal and external influences that affect students' fear when practicing conversation in front of the class. Internal factors include not feeling confident, not daring, afraid of being wrong, embarrassed, not fluent in conveying an utterance, while external factors include an unsupportive classroom environment including distraction from friends, not having enough understanding of words or vocabulary in English, getting negative responses, for example being laughed at or ridiculed, and not having friends or partners to practice English conversation with.

Abstract

The main objective of this study was to look into the effects of collaborative games in teaching English language to students based on the teacher-made instructional materials for Grade 9 students, administered in the experimental group. This study applied quasi-experimental design wherein two (2) sections of Grade 9 students were involved in the conduct of this study whereas one (1) section made use of the developed intervention (experimental) and the other section employed the lecture-discussion method (control). The pretest yielded that students did not meet expectations or have poor understanding of verbals and literary devices as the lesson objectives; therefore, contextualized collaborative games were made to improve their learning on the topics. Moreover, after the implementation of the intervention to the experimental group, it was found out that the developed instructional materials were effective and created learning improvement on students’ conceptual understanding regarding verbals and literary devices. Thus, the principles of a game-based type of activities or lessons can be an effective strategy in teaching English language specially to academically challenged learners.

Abstract

Swearing has traditionally been considered an inappropriate use of language, but numerous people continue to swear in formal and informal circumstances, like a mobile legend player. The presence of swear words in different societies and languages shows that this intriguing and multifarious language phenomenon has been prevalent in real-life discourse (Dynel, 2012). The study investigated the uses and meanings of mobile legend players' swearing behavior in Ghost Wreckers content videos. The transcription was run through Antconc, which also served as the main instrument of the study as it is mainly used in Corpus Linguistics. In the data analysis, numerous swear words were discovered in the game, which appeared to be influenced by the opponents and by the nature of the game. Ultimately, this investigation illustrates that swearing is not always unpleasant but also linguistically meaningful. Likewise, mobile legend players swearing behavior tend to perform various pragmatic functions to express emotions descriptively, abusively, cathartically, emphatically, and idiomatically. This data cements the idea that Mobile Legend is a competitive online game that stimulates raging emotions, a high level of competitiveness, and a firm hold on players' focus that causes them to express their excitement, frustrations, and joy during a game.
