Abstract

Human being is a historical being. In the history the details of life and their struggle is expressed. For the people who believe in God, faith is a fundamental part in their life. The faith is experienced in the history and therefore the faithful see the history as an implementation of divine providence. Accordingly, explaining the history is an important task. The writers of the ancient history use the literary genres such as historiography, chronography and biography. In ancient christianity, the historical writers give a new meaning to the existing literatures. Their authority is not based on the divine inspiration but on the truth about salvific eschatological event. Eusebius is one of the pioneers of the ecclesiastical historiography. In the history of the Church it is the Divine Providence who guides and decides the course of all events to their ultimate purpose namely to prepare the Kingdom of God. Thus the history of the Church is a divine-spiritual history. Nowadays, the influence of Greek and Roman philosophers and famous writers is well observed especially in political theology. This new history is presented with the documentation which was unusual for the history of politics, but which was common in polemical works and biography.

Abstract

In the religious life of the Middle East and in the Christian Bible, the role of angels is very broad and important. The angels are prominent religious figures one cannot just neglect. To understand their presence, every religion, included monotheistic religions, expresses it in cults, literatures and arts in forms of painting, sculptures, music, etc. The Angels are considered as “ghosts” who abide in one layer (stratum) of skies located in the middle and become medium between “the invisible” (God) and “the visible” (Human Being). The significance and the main function of the angels are as ‘Mesenger’ to reveal or to interpret the wishes of those who delegate them and also to protect human being. Finally, the angels become raw material of “cultivation” by the human being itself, without loosing their functions and roles.

Abstract

The metaphysics of Herman Berger (1924 - ) may be called Transcendental Thomism. Berger himself calls his metaphysics, Hermeneutics. The original text of the metaphysics of Thomas Aquinas is ambiguous. The intuition of Thomas is a metaphysics of being. The relation between beings and essence is a relation between act (of being) and potency. Being is prior to the essence. But in the beginning the metaphysics of Thomas seems to be a metaphysics of essences. The ground of uniqueness is not being but the essence. In the theory of representationism the startingpoint is a dualism of immanence and transendence. As long as the startingpoint is a kind of dualism, there is no way to know the correspondence between knowledge (immanent) and the reality outside (transcendent). The transcendental method asks “what kind of (pre)- knowledge makes me aware that my knowledge is finite”. That is only possible by the presence of an infinite knowledge. Our knowledge is at the same time infinite and finite, immanent and transcendent, divine and human. The first is pre-nowledge; complete but implicit, vague and needs to be expressed conceptually. The latter is explicit but never complete. Anexplicitation is true in so far it expresses the implicit knowledge. A concept is clear but never complete because it is universal, while reality is concrete and individual. The pre-knowledge is “as wide as all the reality”; it is the ground for judging whether an explanation is true or not. All beings have a vertical relation to Being because they are contingens. Every uniqueness is a gift. There are degrees of uniqueness and everything has its own individuality according to its being.

Abstract

To define what human being is one could present various definitions. Aristotle, for instance, defines the human being as animal rationale. One can, however, say that the human being is a hermeneutical being. Since its coming into existence the human being is dealing and will deal with hermeneutical act of interpretation. This act of interpretation is usually called hermeneutics. Generally speaking the hermeneutics is the act of human being in interpreting realities in life. Strictly speaking, however, it deals with interpretation of textual reality. In philosophical domain, the hermeneutics seeks to account for the philosophical ground of the act of interpretation. What is the ground of our intrepretation so that the interpretation may be accepted valid and true?

The progress of science and technology give a great effect to human culture. New inventions or methods, either they are beneficial or not for human life, slowly put aside the people way of life is the which has already been practiced along the centuries or even take its place. One of the richness of Indonesian cultures is that there are so many kinds of traditional houses. It is one of the identities of tribes. Almost in all places in Indonesia, the forms of the traditional house-buildings are changing, even some of them are going to be disappeared. This article is a result of research on a changing culture, especially that of orientation of the Bataks in building their dwelling. Through library research on the traditional-house building of Toba Batak’s and studies on theory of culture and field research, this article describes the causal factors of the decreasing of the traditional-house building among the Toba Bataks.
