Abstract

This research aimed to describe how picture series medium can increase the students’s writing skill for eighth grade at state junior high school 1 of Bintan. Classroom action research was the research design. The research comprised of two cycles with four meeting in the two cycles. A test was the main data of this research. Twenty students in VIII B at state junior high school 1 of Bintan, in the academic year of 019/2020 was the subject of this research. The outcome appeared there were upgrades in students’ writing skill. It tends to be seen from the outcome of each post-test in the two cycles. Students’ test average in cycle 1 was 63.57. Students’ test average in second cycle was 68.87. It means picture series medium could help students in improving their writing skill.

Abstract

Abstract The function of writing skills is the most effective way to show someone’s English proficiency, including the ability and difficulties. The objective of this research was to know the factors and to the dominant factor of students’ writing difficulties in procedure text. The instruments of this research were interview and writing test as the support data. Therefore, the researcher conducted a descriptive qualitative study analysis. The technique in analysed the data of the interview was a descriptive analysis technique (percentage) and descriptive analysis technique without percentage to analyse the writing test. The researcher asked some aspects of students’ writing difficulties in writing procedure text based on the syllabus of class 9 K13 namely social function, structure text, language features, and topic. For the writing test, the students were asked to write a procedure text. So that the students had difficulties in social function, structure text, language features, and topic. This research showed the dominant factor students’ writing difficulties in procedure text was language features, like vocabulary and grammar which made the students difficult when writing the procedure text. Thus, the students still faced difficulties in writing skills like procedure text and the students have to improve their ability in writing skills. Keywords: Difficulty, Writing, Procedure Text

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the Community Language Learning Method (CLLM) is more effective on the ability to speak 11th-grade students of MIPA SMA Negeri 4, Tanjungpinang. This type of research used in this study is Quasi Research. The tool used to obtain research data is an oral test. The population in this study was eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 4 Tanjungpinang. This study uses a method that requires students to carry out speaking activities in a group with topics that have been mutually agreed upon in each group. Researcher gave a pretest before learning activities. After the learning activities, the researcher gives a posttest that is added to the rubric of assessment, calculating the average value, and analyzing with the help of a computer application namely SPSS. The application of the Community Language Learning Method (CLLM) during the learning process turns out to have an effect on the ability of students to carry out conversations in groups that have been formed. It can be seen during the teaching and learning process students look more active and enthusiastic about learning to speak situations using the Community Language Learning Method (CLLM).

Abstract

Collocation is a natural order of words in which one word should be attached to another in a particular context. For students who learn English as a foreign language (EFL students), using collocations has been recognized to become a problem. This article is going to describe EFL college students’ skill in using collocations in writing essays. 42 students from the same class were selected. They were the 4th semester students of English Education Study Program at Teacher Training and Education Faculty of UMRAH who took Essay Writing course in the academic year 2019/ 2020. The students were given a take-home assignment to write essays. Then, the essays were analyzed to find out the students’ skill in using collocations. It was found that in using collocation in writing essays, 5 students had excellent skill, 14 students had good skill, and 23 students had low skill. The incorrect use of collocations consisted of lexical and grammatical collocations. Finally, it is hoped that these findings could be a useful input for future Essay Writing course.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the student’s ability in translating idiom on narrative text written by them as investigated by the researcher. This research belongs to descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this research involved twenty students of fourth semester of English Department Students University Maritim Raja Ali Haji. The instrument used a test. The test that has given is short answer, which the students are asked to find how many idioms that the student found on narrative text given by the researcher. After finding the idiom, the students were asked to translate into Indonesian with meaning correctly. The result of this research reveals that the students’ ability to find and translated idiom is still not accurate in translation. The students’ only found a few of idioms from 20 idioms that given by the researcher which were contained on narrative text. The problem that arises when the results are analyzed is inability of students to translate with the meaning correctly so that some students translate word by word. Abstract

The use of E- learning in English Language Teaching (ELT) has been strongly promoted since the pandemics Covid-19 is widely spread. Many researches have been conducted to find the best digital online learning to be used in the classroom. However, little to no research investigates about the most suitable digital online learning for the students living in the remote area whereas, especially in Indonesia, there were so many remote areas. Thus, this paper assists to describe the best digital platforms to be used in the remote Area. There were 15 ELT students involved as the participants. The chosen students were the students living in remote area. The instruments were a questionnaire. The result showed that Messenger Application, especially WhatsApp is the most preferred by the students living in the remote area, following by LMS represented by google classroom, and the last is video conference, particularly zoom. The finding of this research can become a consideration for the educators, especially teaching in remote area, in selecting the digital platform in online learning.
