Abstract

Batik Industry has been developed in Banyumas regency, Central JavaIndonesia. This industry produced liquid waste as the side of production process. The liquid waste decreased the water quality surrounds it. One of the pollutantwhich brought trough the liquid waste was heavy metal chromium (Cr) whichknown toxic to the organism in the water. Therefore, there should be preventionaction to minimize the bad impact of liquid waste. One of method which could beuse to prevent the water quality was by phytoremediation. There were three kindsof aquatic plant in this research; Eceng gondok (Eichornia crassipes), kayu apu(Pistia stratiotes) and ganggang (Hydrilla verticillata). The aim of using aquaticplant was to observe the ability of aquatic plant to decrease chromium level in thewater and decide which was the most effective. It was use completely randomizeddesign with 4 treatments and 6 repetitions, which will analyze by ANAVA andcontinued with LSD. The result showed that aquatic plant could be used asremediator agent to heavy metal Cr. Eceng gondok had 49.56%, kayu apu had33.61% and ganggang had 10.84% on decreasing Cr level in liquid waste of batikindustry. It can conclude that Eceng gondok was the most effectivephytoremediator agent on decreasing Cr level in liquid waste of batik industry.

Abstract

Phytoplankton is a very important microorganisms in pond, it has a function asprimary producer, natural fish food and as supporting water quality parameters.Phytoplankton growth could be supported by adding fertilizer. One of the best fertilizerthat could be used is liquid organic fertilizer. This research was conducted on June 1-28,2009 at the Water Quality Management Laboratory, Faculty of Fisheries and MarineScience, University of Riau. The aim of this research was to investigate the effect ofaddition of liquid organic fertilizer toward phytoplankton abundance. Completerandomly design with one factor, six treatments and three replications was applied. Resultshowed that positive relationship between concentrations of liquid organic fertilizer andphytoplankton abundance. Liquid organic fertilizer concentrations applied were : P0(Control), P1 (0,133 ml/m3), P2 (0,244 ml/m3), P3 (0,511 ml/m3), P4 (1,00 ml/m3) and P5(2,00 ml/m3). Result showed that the best abundance was obtained from P5 (2,00 ml/m3)with phytoplankton abundance was 21667 ind/l. The organic material of soil content from3,820-8,631 %, nitrate concentration 0,234-2,605 ppm, temperature 24-320C, pH of water(6,1-7,9), DO 3,0-5,3 ppm, turbidity 38-228 NTU, CO2 11,99-50,40 ppm andorthoposphate concentration 0,099-0,427 ppm.

Abstract

Phytochemical screening and Brine Shrimp lethality test of katuk leavesextract had been done against Artemia salina Leach. The aims of this study is toscreen potentially bioactive extract of katuk leaves as an effort to find out thechemical substances responsible for the toxic effect. Katuk leaves (Saoropusandrogenus (L.) Merr.) was extracted by ethanol 96%, to find the rendemen ofkatuk leaf extract. Phytochemical screening was done qualitatively. The toxicitytest was used experimental design with 4x3 treatments. The concentration extract50 ppm, 100 ppm, 500 ppm and 1000 ppm, with 3 repetitions. Its effect was testedagainst A. salina, L (Brine Shrimp Test). The result of phytochemical screeningshowed that compounds in the extract of katuk leaves (Saoropus androgenus (L.)Merr.) contained of sterol after the addition of diethyl ether. Katuk leaf extractalso contained phenol substance such as tannin, saponin and flavonoid. The resultof the study shows that extract of katuk leaves (Saoropus androgenus) was toxicbecause it was able to kill more than 50% larva of A. salina, L at the concentrationless than 1000 ppm. The LC50 of katuk leaves extract (Saoropus androgenus (L.)Merr.) was shown at 954.01 ppm.

Abstract

Several large and small rivers in Riau flow down into the estuary ofKampar River. Water that flown from these resources, however, may containmany types of pollutants as there are many industrial and domestic activitiesconducted along the river dispose their waste in the river. The present of thepollutant strongly affect the water quality and negatively affect aquatic organismliving in the river. To understand the effects of the pollutant, especially theindustrial pollutant on the biology of aquatic organisme, this study wasconducted. Samples of water, sediment and Hemibagrus nemurus (Bagridae) weretaken and the presence of heavy metal in these samples were analyzed. Heavymetal content in the sediment and water were analyzed using an AAS method, while its presence in the fish was detected in the kidney that was processed forhistological analysis. Results shown that the highest Pb and Cd content waspresent in the kidney of fish living in the downstream, followed by fish living inthe midstream and the lowest was in the fish captured in the upstream.Histological analysis of the kidney shown that there is abnormality of the kidneytissue as there are necrotic cells, limphocyte presence, infected glomerulus andhaemorrhagic spots. Heavy metals accumulation was also detected as there areblack spots (indication of heavy metal mineralization) present in that tissue. Aswell as in the fish tissue, the highest heavy metal content were found in the waterand sediment taken from the downstream, followed by mid and downstream. However, statistical analysis shown that there is no interaction between Cdcontent and sampling sites (P>0.05). Data obtained in this research proved that thewaste originated from industrial activities along the river negatively affect waterquality as well as aquatic organisms, especially Bagridae fish.

Abstract

Fish stress may be governed by change of water temperature that increaseboth chatecolamine and cortisal secretion. In high level both hormone have anegative effects on fish immune system. Increasing of cortical in blood plasmawould lead to inhibition of interleukin I and II formation. Thus, fish immunesystem dropped which cause fish suffer from infection and eventually dead.Physiological stress may stimulate increasing of cortical and glucose level ofblood plasma. As such lysozime activity would increase. Increase of bloodglucose is of a normal indicator of stressed fish. An randomized block designexperiment with one factor, have been carried out to evaluate the effect or watertemperature on blood glucose of fish. Three level of water temperature ( 24, 28.and 280C) were applied. It revealed that blood glucose level ranged from 127.23to 192,96gr/dl with maximum level of glucose appeared in fish reared in 240C (12gr/dl), and the lowest at of 32oC.. Blood hemoglobin in accordance with bloodglucose, in which maximum level found in 240C (12 gr/dl). The highesthematocrite level were appeared in treatment of 240C (39,83%). Red BloodNumber of 4.725 X 103 sel/mm3, were found in the water temperature of 240C.
